    an egg with a tail!
as this week begins another round of crested eggs becoming due to hatch i went to check the incubator, and low and behold, one of the eggs had grown a tail!

    http://mlededee.com/herps/cresties/cg45_062606a.jpg

upon closer inspection i found a hatchling in the incubator, sans tail. apparently when the gecko was emerging from the egg it must have felt trapped or maybe the opening in egg pinched on its tail or something...this is a first, so who knows what happened exactly.

"hmm, i think i left something back there..."

    "I came out for THIS?"

Lol, he's going to have a complex when he sees all the other cresties with their tales. He'll be an outcast, a loner, scarred for life...

Okay, over-dramatization. But that second picture is the cutest pic! He just looks like he's cursing.

Awww.....that poor lil guy. Cresties can't regenerate their tails can they? The first pic reminds me of when I was in grade school and we did the lima bean sprout project....when the lima bean first started growing from the seed(bean), it had a tiny sprout emerge.....and it looked just like that. It's kinda funny but it isn't....

Nope cresties don't regenerate their tails. My HOTM is a prime example. ;) :D (isn't she adorable. :giggle: )

score! except you are psycho AND cool and have geckos. so you wouldn't jump on someone for their regeneration assumptions. :D

the egg tail totally does look like a sprouting lima bean!

Thanks! I enjoy my psycho-ness. (ha I'm making up words too!)

How's the little guy doing? All healed up, I hope. I'm such a sucker for the tailless geckos. I just think they're adorable.

I've been trying to figure out how to hold one of the little guys and offer a little CGD from my finger. How do you get them to sit still long enought to try and tempt them???

he seems to be doing just fine now that he has found his balance. he was pretty off balance for the first little while having no tail and not being sure exactly what happened to it! :P

oh right getting them to sit still--that's the fun part! i keep hatchlings and juvies in kritter keepers. i pop off the top and get them to jump up to the edge of the keeper and perch there. in the short moments that they are perched, trying to decide on their next move i dab the cgd on their noses, and repeat until they realize it is food and start licking. this often involves lots of leaping off of the kritter keeper, being placed back on the edge, running up arms and shirts, some bouncing around and other general craziness--but once they sit still long enough to realize that there is something good to eat on their nose they will start licking and you can feed them right out of a spoon. after you do this with them a few times they start to figure out that you are going to feed them and it gets MUCH easier. warning: small geckos also like to jump into spoonfuls of cgd and make big messes. :D

    LMAO!! :giggle:

Thank you soooo much! I will try that. I have two dishes of the CGD in the critter keeper, and it looks like someone was eating. I like the idea of feeding them, that way I know they are eating. How many times a day do you hand feed the little guys?

Re: an egg with a tail!
i only feed them by hand they very first few times that i offer them cgd or until i see that they are eating it from the dish on their own, which is usually after the first 2-3 times that i feed them by hand. i'd probably feed them all by hand more if i could just because it is cute and fun but i just don't have time to feed that many geckos by hand when i know they are eating on their own anyhow!

i do have one hatchling that i feel is a little small for its age and i feed her by hand every 3-4 days or so just to make sure that she is eating enough, but she is the exception. she also very much enjoys leaping into the spoon and then dashing up my arm leaving sticky tracks. :P she sometimes requires a quick bath when feeding time is over--i certainly always require one when i'm done with her! :P

Wow; the egg seems to have an evil, knowing grin in the second pic; I would be scared too if I were the little lizard guy!

Thanks Emily!! You are a wonderful source of info. The little guys are doing good. They've shed, and boy have their colors changed. I'll post pictures soon. I'd do it now but I've had computer problems (that's putting it lightly, since it's dead). We're looking at getting a new one tomorrow. THANK GOD!! :happycry:

Ohh that is fun! The little ones seem to want to move and be on the go all the time.. I hand feed my cresties every once in a while... but I feed them fresh fruit mashed up with thier vitamins and stuff in it, that way I know they are getting some for sure..it amounts to about once every 2 to 3 weeks. The fresh fruit is a welcomed treat and change in thier MRP powder diet.
