    Albino + Carmel Albino =?
Hi I have always been wondering what everyone thinks the carmel albino + albino will look like? Has anyone produced one or attempting one? Thank you

I think it will be something like a snow, because what makes the snow is a axathic and a albino and a caramel is a axathic only albino. that just my opinon

Caramels are Xanthic ... not Axanthic ... big difference.

Where's Mendel and his balls (pythons) to drop some knowledge on us about chromataphores?? He's wicked smart and I bet has a pretty decent idea about what "should" happen. ;)

Re: Albino + Carmel Albino =?
Albinism is the lack of the pigment Melanin

Melanin is made from the amino acid tryosine using an enzyme called tryosinase

Xanthic Morphs (aka Carmel Albinos) are believed to be tryosinase positive while regular albinos are believe to be tryosinase negative (i.e. they dont make the enzyme)

For tryosinase positive animals they supposedly make the enzyme but the melanin never gets into the skin pigment cells (chromatophores) for some reason.

So if these hypotheses are correct, then I think you'd have to predict that a double recessive carmel albino, albino would result in a regular albino appearance because the carmel trait (inability to get melanin into pigment cells) wouldnt compensate for the inability to make melanin.

I'm still waiting for someone to cross homozygous caramel with homozygous amel to be sure they aren't alleles (yes, I know, I think everything COULD be alleles until proven otherwise).

One explanation of the albinos seen in one of the imported caramel lines is that the founder is a double het (not really the right wording) caramel and amel and they are alleles with the caramel being dominant over amel.

it stands for amelanistic, which means lacking melanin

an amelanistic albinos would be any albino that can not make melanin

amelanistic albino are the regular, standard albinos

They are believed to be amelanistic because they are thought to be tryosinase negative---this enzyme is needed to make melanin.

Re: Albino + Carmel Albino =?
Sorry, I shouldn't have mixed terms. By "amel" I meant regular albino, the yellow and white ones you see most. I was trying to avoid "albino" because sometimes you see the xanthics called "caramel albino". The multiple names does get confusing but I should have stuck with the nomenclature from the title of this thread but maybe added "regular" to say that as far as I know no one has eliminated the possibility that regular albino and caramel are alleles. That might be a (slightly) less improbable explanation for the regular albinos seen in one of the imported caramel lines. Eventually someone will do and publish the homozygous regular albino to homozygous caramel cross and then we'll know depending on if the babies look normal or not.

Ok mendel... I got a question for you ... This is about humans. Say you have a human with albino white skin, redish pupals but has normal colored hair and some dark freckel like pigment spots? BTW the eyes are crystal blue with redish pupals.

Edti:: the child was born with out any "freckels" or pigment they started coming up at the age of 8
