Re: my black blood
Nice black blood - fellow owner, here.
How big is she? What else do you keep?

Re: my black blood
My blood (Baby Nia) is almost 2feet. She is great. She doesn't mind handling at all. I just feed her saturday night, for the first time. She had no problems at all. I also have a female ball python. She was actually gravid when we bought her. (Which we didnt know) We used a friends chicken egg incubator, her eggs didnt make it. The temps/humidity were perfect. I had a feeling it was the incubator. The eggs were too close to the heat. I was sooo upset. But the ball was my first snake EVER! So I tried my best.

Cool - glad to hear you have a mellow one - same story with ours ("Vader" is actually the first herp our son bought for himself out of his own pocket) - a very mellow guy. They love humidity. What are you keeping yours in?

Re: my black blood
The blood is in a 20gallon (long) aquarium, with aspen/moss bedding. And our ball is in a 55 gallon with aspen and a lil moss. Both have a under the tank heater. And of course they both have water bowls, and hide boxes, plus drift wood.

Welcome to BP.net! :handshake:
Nice looking python you got there! Looking forward to seeing some post-shed pictures!

Re: my black blood
How is the humidity with the aspen?
-
Re: my black blood
not too good with just aspen(in the 20gallon)... so we added the moss, and have to spray it often. For some reason the 55gallon is always perfect. I added a little moss also, but it really doesnt need it.

I haven't used aspen all that much - though my wife does regularly for her collection - it doesn't seem to be too accomadating when it gets wet. When the house is mega-arid (winter heating via gas) I keep them on the sphagnum, or newspaper with a sphagnum hide. In the summer plain newsprint is fine (no a/c) - all mine are utter slobs with their water! I do keep em in the big tubs meant for rolling underbed though.
How about the lid - do you have the screen paritally covered with anything? When kali (brongersmai) was a wee lass and I had her in glass it was just about undoable without having contac paper on most of the screen.

Re: my black blood
my bp 55ga lid is just a screen, but the bloods 20ga lid is partically covered with plexi glass.

Question: Should I remove the aspen and just use newspaper and sphagnum???

I'm not much of a fan of aspen for more humid environments (tends to mold).
What is your humidity now?
-
Re: my black blood
around 45-55%, if left unsprayed. But after spraying it usually retains at 65% then eventually drops back down. Even with the plexi glass! but the balls 55 gallon is always constant 60% (without spraying or covered lid) although she is a much bigger snake, and has a much bigger water bowl.

Re: my black blood
I always had problems with humidity in top opening cages. I switched to eco earth for a while and the humidity was great put it can be a big mess. I switched to repti bark for my 4' cage that has my boa in it and it stays at 60% with a gentle spray every week or 2.
