What's better than ONE pet Laughing Kookaburra? (DU NO NO)
Why, TWO pet Laughing Kookaburras, of course!!!! (If you're unfamiliar with the famous "kookaburra laugh" click here)

We've had our male - "Sydney" - since October 05, and he's just the coolest non-psitaccine bird one could hope for. He's a hand raised yearling who thinks I'm his mum, and most days he'll call to me when I koo-aaah at him.

Today we got "Bindi" a 10-week-old female...she's sitting next to me as I type, and just did her laughing call when I played the sound file that's linked above...pretty cute for a little gal, and very fiesty at this point (in other words, anything that fits in her mouth is fair game, fingers included)!

    http://newenglandreptile.com/forumpics/kooks/bindi3.jpg

Hopefully this time next year Syd will be madly in love with Bindi...in the mean time we sort of get the feeling she's the "little sister's best friend who's a pest for now, but may be cool someday..."

"WTF is that little fluffy thing?!?!?"
    http://newenglandreptile.com/forumpi...s/sidbindi.jpg

    "Are you my mommy?"
    http://newenglandreptile.com/forumpi.../sidbindi1.jpg

"Come one step closer kid & I'll eat your head!"
    http://newenglandreptile.com/forumpi.../sidbindi2.jpg

"Told you so!!!!!" (Kooks beak-wrestle for dominance...this was just prior to them trying to chomp each other).
    http://newenglandreptile.com/forumpi.../sidbindi3.jpg

Anyway...the future goal is to have a family group of 5-6 of these birds, since they're extremely social animals, and a ton of fun to interact with.

    Enjoy!

    Awesome K! ... I like it!

I was thinking about you the other day ... I was at the Baltimore Aquarium the other day with my son and we were walking through their new Australia exhibit (we actually went to see sharks, but he was humoring me) when one of the guides pointed out a kookaburra ... we looked for a little bit and then I told Jason that my friend Kara has one of those .... The guide then interrupted and said ... "I'm sure you're mistaken, they’re not the same as the birds you can buy in pet stores" ... LOL ... I just smiled. ;)

Well, DUH!!! Or in the words of Carlos Mencia, "Dee dee dee!" Of course we didn't get them from a pet store...they came from a breeder.

    ;)

As I said before when you got your first one.. kingfishers rock!

Do they make a lot of noise all day, or just at select times? I like their call, but I could see it irritating others if it's too frequent. lol

Are they considered a softbill.. ie do they require a low iron diet? Just curious here.. someday I may like to own one myself.

April- they do indeed rock! Extremely smart birds with a lot of personality to boot! They don't sound off all day long, but they will when the sun comes up, and then call again at night pretty consistently. I can typically elicit the entire laughing call if I "koo-ahh" and cluck to them, but sometimes they won't do it & people just sit there & look at me funny while I make all these silly noises. ;) Their call is really cool when you're about 5' away...when they're sitting on your shoulder, it's earsplitting!

To the best of my knowledge, they don't require a low-iron diet, and will eat ANYTHING that they could possibly fit into that sharp pointy beak. They definitely know what is prey - i.e. anything that moves, vs. what isn't - people food, etc.

Wow, I love their colors! They seem to have a ton of personality, judging by those faces.
Do you need any sort of permit to own them? I am just curious how that works. :)
