Writing Center
I'm sure that a lot of the members here are not only avid snake adorers, but are more-than-likely writers. I was wondering if we could possibly have a place on the forum to post our written works, whether prose or poetry. Just an idea, and not a demand by any means.
Anyhoo...mull it over.

Re: Writing Center
Do you mean a forum dedicated to poetry/prose and journaling - or something other than a forum? I support any and all creative endeavors - especially writing (yay literacy).
The only thing to be wary of is it would all have to fit into the fam-friendly environment which right there negates most contributions I could make personally to content.

I agree, it would be nice to have a place to post my work and have it commented on, but (as Smulkin said) most of my work too, would be against some family orientated morales and I would most likely get banned really quickly. :banned1:

Re: Writing Center
I don't know how this board is set up, but when I was a member of a phpbb2 board, which this seems to use, the admins could create a board, and allow only a certain demographic within a private board. I was actually the DM(Dungeon Master) of a few of these boards. -Shrugs.- But it's not that important. I sort of...forgot how family unfriendly my writing is as well.

Re: Writing Center
I have enjoyed reading the writings you have posted Mel. Even if we do not get a dedicated spot I hope you keep posting :D

Re: Writing Center
I'd love to find a solution for this - making space for folks to post their creative side of all sorts would be cool. I know we have a user-submitted gallery for art in the galleries - but this would be able to encompass more creative efforts.
The censorship issue would bother me though as (believe it or not) I am on a personal level harshly opposed to censorship where the arts are concerned - and I would feel asking folks to "clean up" their creative efforts would be stifling in that very sense - whether it be painting/sculpture/writing etc. Even the thought of bleeped out CDs at Wal-Mart takes me bak to Zappa v Tipper Gore and boils me blood.
I would be willing to go so far as to snag another domain if need be - but would not be able to roll over the user database (which I know defeats a lot of the motivation behind the request :().
Please keep this rolling guys and let me know your thoughts.

Re: Writing Center
Is there a way to create a forum like the existing format "off topic cafe" ect that when you click into it takes you to an agreement screen? Maybe that warns of adult material and you accept this warning before entering?
-
Re: Writing Center
I'm all in support of sharing creativity, but at the same time I don't want this site to lose its focus as 100% herp related. We've got one off-topic forum which I feel is adequate. I've seen other boards where there's a zillion subforums and other areas completely unrelated to the purpose of the whole community, and its just annoying to wade through. At MOST I could see a subforum within the off-topic area, but even that, that starts to get messy.
Keep 'em coming in the off-topic forum...but I don't think we need a dedicated forum for that type of stuff.

Re: Writing Center
If you could get such a screen to appear it would either come up when you navigated through any portion of that section (as in every page navigation) or could just be bypassed completely.
A "gloves off" subforum has been discussed several times (though never in a creative light) and shot down due to it defeating the overall family friendly ideology of the site as a whole.

Or some way to filter through people's birth dates? Only allow 16 and over or 18 and over to read?
The problems I see is that by introducing a section that may include non-family oriented writing, it, one, opens the door for lewd discussions not pertaining to the writing and two, it excludes some of our members.
Personally, I'm all for lewd discussions, but one of the foundations of BP.net is it's family-orientation, so opening the door to segregation and adult conversations is maybe somewhere we don't want to go. I dunno...I'd love to read y'all writing, but this may not be the right place to share it.

Re: Writing Center
I think a gloves off forum would be alright if you could restrict access in some way...what means do you have to do so, if at all?
I guess I just don't want to see bps.net cluttered by a whole lot of off-topic type stuff, if I want to read eccentric writing or 30 page rants on someone's love life, I'll go somewhere else to do so.

Can you imagine if there was a place where anything goes!? The "wolfpack" on here would scare EVERYONE away, lol.....y'all know who you are!

Re: Writing Center
I'll buy the domain - foot the hosting bill, whatever it takes - but BPnet's prime directive has to stay herp-oriented and as such most beneficial if open to all (even as I struggle not to type the way I speak - which makes Al Swearengen there sound like Tony Blair).
-
Re: Writing Center
Isn't "staying herp-related" and "open to all" mutually exclusive?.....making forums for off-topic interests so it attracts a wider variety of people isn't a move towards "staying herp-related."
Is that what you were saying? I might me misinterpreting what you said so clear that up if you can.

Re: Writing Center
"open to all" was referring to age groups, etc
Not your fault it was poorly worded - the quittin whistle is blowing here at the quarry and if I dont skedaddle fast Mr Slade will make me work late without pay ;)

Re: Writing Center
It's not big deal. I was just throwing out a random idea and wanted to see where it would go. I don't want anyone to spend any money because of my idea. Just figured it might strike some people's interest.

Re: Writing Center
Hang tight - we're grinding out an idea or two

Re: Writing Center
Yeah, I agree with Smulkin. This is a great idea, but just might not work on this forum. If I know him, he'll come up with a great plan and have the gonads to intiate it too.

Re: Writing Center
I've actually got a PHP forum that I'm working on. Maybe we could use that?

Ahhhwwwwwooooooooooooo! An unregulated forum would be dangerous and as much as I would like to have an area where I can be the ass that I know I am, I think its a bad idea...
As far as the writing forum, I would have to agree with my compadre Brad. Lets keep the focus on herps. We all go off topic enough in those forums. But I love me some good writin'
