    sales...local / shipping
With reptile shipping rates so high, do most breeders sell the majority of there snake/ lizards locally? or are most people willing to pay the shipping for a good quality animal. Here in Canada shipping is as much as 125 for a BP. I guess if you are purchasing a nigh priced morph 125$ isnt all that much when u are talking a few thousand dollars.

Wow the shipping rates around here are around $50,unless the buyer lives in the boondocks.Even then never even close to $125 :O

S&H for the most part is between $40-$50 for FedEx or UPS next day air. Most are willing to pay the S&H or the breeder just includes it in the price of the snake or the breeder will pay for the S&H from his end.

If S&H is included in the price and you are buying more than one snake, make sure you get the discount for S&H if they are being shipped in the same box.

Same as the 3% PayPal charges, some sellers try and pass that on to the customer.

Normally its just the same price no matter how many snakes are in the box.

Well it usually costs more to ship more snakes because of the added weight, but less than shipping them all seperately. ;)

    Re: sales...local / shipping
It depends on the size of the two snakes as mentioned. From not costing anything extra to a few bucks more depending on weight.

It took me around a month to get certified. The longest part that takes up most of the time is shipping your sample box to Memphis,so they can run there tests. If you are going thru this make sure you pack everything just like you were shipping a snake in the box.For example tape the lids on your containers that the snake will be in during the trip, pack newspapers around everything so nothing moves inside(this is for the containers). They will run your box thru multiple tests and if your box fails you will not be certified until you pass there tests.I use boxes from Superior Enterprises and there deli containers.I hope this helps

It all depends on your local FedEx rep and how FedEx feels at the time. Some have taken 1-2 weeks, while others I've heard 2-3 months.

We buy boxes from Uline shipping supplies and buy the foam/insulation sheets from HomeDepot. Total cost for a 12X9X6 insulated box for example comes out to about $1.00 and takes less than 5 minutes to prepare. Compared to $2.50-$3.50 for the same insulated box. We haven't been able to find a supplier for the Deli-cups yet.

Thanks, but I was thinking more a long the line of restaurant bulk suppliers.
Those 32 oz. Deli-cups for example shouldn't cost more than $0.15-$0.30 cents a piece from a restaurant supplier or direct from the manufacture.

Just gotta figure out how to tap into the source. ;)

You'll have to punch all the holes yourself though. Just food for thought. I'd rather buy'em pre-punched. Although, I don't care for the deli-cups at all. I'd rather use the bags...they are more, but I like'em better.

So, do you cut the foam yourself then?

Yes, takes less than 5 minutes and if your doing multiple boxes it's even quicker. I usually prep ten boxes at a time, once you get into a grove it goes pretty quick.

    Same goes for snake sacks.
We buy the fabric at Wal-Mart for about $1.00 a yard and I'll sew a bunch of sacks in varying sizes before breeding season. Average 6X12 sack costs about $0.06-$0.08 compared to $0.50-$0.70 already sewn.

Gerry here's a link for GFS (Gordon Food Services - restaurant supplier but open to the general public w/o any membership fees). It seems they do business in Florida though I'm not sure how close to where you are in that state. They are a fanastic place to find deli cups (as well as do a ton of shopping for your family). A friend of mine buys all her spring mix for her iggy's there for half the price of anywhere else. Maybe they are close enough to you. I know Jeanne bought a really big thing of deli cups there, so per deli cup it was very reasonable and no delivery charges.

I know the one I used in Michigan offered a further 10% discount if you had a registered business name that you were buying for regularily (didn't seem to care what you bought either LOL).

Oh excellent Gerry! You'll love GFS! If your family likes swedish meatballs their GFS sauce in the can and a bag of pre-made frozen meatballs is as good as homemade any day (and I know since I used to spend freakin hours rolling meatballs and simmering sauce LOL....never again!) One of my favorite places to shop!

Four days from start of process to approval, then two weeks or so after that until Legal got the paperwork to my local rep... Delta only took about 4 days TOTAL.

I wouldn't really call it an "inspection" ... more like a quick look around to see if you have big barrels of nitrogen based fertilizer anywhere. They could not care less about seeing snakes when they show up.

My Delta "Inspection" experience was as follows:

I get a phone call from a local contractor working for Delta in the morning... they ask if today's a good day to come by. I say sure... They set up an appointment.

Guy shows up with clip board with lots of stuff to sign.... I sign all kinds of stuff... I ask if he'd like to see the herp room, or my shipping supplies, he says "Snakes give me the hebee-jeebees" I show him out, I get an email two days later saying "all done".

That's how the inspection went for me. :)

    Hey Ken,
When I read your post, I thought you were explaining how the process went at my place. Were you hiding in the closet or something. The chic that came out for my inspection asked me what I shipped, and when I told her snakes, she wanted to know if there were any in the room that we were in. When I told her there were some boas right behind her, she almost jumped clean out of her skin.

    Tim,

The 4 year old (Stefani) tried the lead the guy by the hand saying "Common, they won't bite you... they're right in here.." It was too cute. But the guy wouldn't budge. Just signed the paperwork, and out the door he went... With haste! lol
