So, how do you keep them from going up the tree higher out of reach???? :halohorn:

Looked like a pretty lithesome snake. Do they get heavier bodied like a blood?

VERY, VERY pretty colors and markings. Love the head and neck pattern on it!

Thanks for sharing the pictures, Kara.

How beautiful Kara.. barnecks are my favorite scrub. I know they have quite a reputation for nastiness.. is it deserved, in your opinion? (not that I'd care anyway.. haha)

Usually in the 11' - 15' range for barnecks. True Australian scrubs get even bigger, but there are next to none in the US.

Scrubs are not very forgiving of a) husbandry mistakes or b) timid keepers. They are big, active, strong snakes that also happen to be smart enough to test those who work with them. Treated with respect by an experienced keeper, scrubs can be among the most rewarding big pythons to keep, but they have *very* large teeth & are capable of inflicting serious bites. Like any snake, you have to treat them with a LOT of respect & be aware of what these snakes are & the punch they can pack. You wouldn't get a retic & expect it to act like a ball python...just like you wouldn't get a scrub & expect it to act like, say, a carpet python by comparison. In other words, great snakes for a more advanced keeper, not for a beginner or younger keeper.

Yes, they were at one point all considered to be part of the amethistina complex, but have since been broken up into separate species. The above snake is M. amethistina.

A)You have a very tall & capable snake wrangler to control the snake while you take photos. ;) B) They stay very proportionate - they are long, lithe & limber snakes...they do fill out & thicken up (as this fellow) as they grow, but they're not a heavy-bodied species, esp. compared to a blood or retic.

They are what you make of them. Take a keeper who doesn't understand what scrubs are about & who doesn't treat the snake with respect, and they'll turn it into a train wreck. Scrubs are smart & can be high-strung. Think of them kind of like an OTTB - you can take one & give it time to be a horse, and then retrain well into a good using animal, or you can take an animal fresh off the track & beat it up more, and have a nightmare. ;)

And again, thanks to everyone for all the positive feedback...it's great to see everyone enjoy some of the lesser-known species. :D

Great shots Kara. I remember Steve Kates had a gaggle of them during the LIRM closing.
We took one in that was soon put down due to a variety of health issues. I miss her, as Scrubs ecspecially the bar necks are in my top ten list.
I really like the info you gave to folks, I couldn't have put it in any better words...
    Thanks

Thx for the analogy from this quarter as well........As an owner of an OTTB, and a two different retired AQHA runners, I can fully appreciate the point you're making.

Nice to get some of the education about these lesser known snakes from those w/the knowledge and experience to send us in the right direction.

Thanks (again) for the awesome pics, Kara!

Re: For "Scrub Python" (dialup warning!!!!!!)
OTTB = "Off track thoroughbred" - one that was initially trained for racing, but is no longer doing so for whatever reason. Many of them can be retrained for another sport (or pleasure riding) by a sensitive & conscientious equestrian.

They are great snakes to handle, the only problem is to get them in your hands without teeth marks LOL LOL. They are extremly smart snakes and very strong.
