Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
We had some people come by and spray around our house today for termites and roches... My snakes are fine and at a friends house but I just got home and all of my mice are dead!!!
The only outlet for live mice is Petsmart and the little :cens0r: are 5 bucks a piece
here is the hard part... my snakes will only eat live. If there is any one from GA around Atlanda, Agusta or GA/SC border near Akien and you know of a place to get mice un bulk PLEASE let me know where.
Thanks every one

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
Thanks...I didnt even think to check my mice ... I went to feed them and they were dead.... I find it in a way kind of funny.Im mad but still giggling...
*being allergic to all bug killers , they had to use the allergen free stuff from Bayre that is also "Pet friendly". I still didnt trust the stuff with my BPs but I figured my mice would be fine as long as they sprayed out side the house... nope, Im bug free and mouse free. :tricho:

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
Sorry about that Jessica. I buy from a pet store near me, and he can sell bulk, but there's no discount, so I am looking for another source myself. I did buy some from a pet store down past the airport when I couldn't find hoppers. I can get there, but I don't know street names.
I know it's the same exit as the Georgia Rennaissance Festival (I can't believe I actually spelled that right! LOL) but going the opposite direction on the same road and they breed their mice there too. It's an hour drive from me in a good traffic day, so I've only been there once when visiting a girl friend of mine.
The pet store where I currently buy from is $1.50 a mouse.
Sorry that happened to you!

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
My son has 9 snakes. We have always feed live. One of our BP will only eat in the dark. Well we just had a rat do an number on him before he killed it. NO MORE LIVE feeding here. We are in the process of switching all my son's snakes over to pre-killed food. Watching your snake hit and kill it's food can be axciting and amazing but for us it is no longer worth our pets health. Rats and inflict a lot more damage than mice and your snakes will one day be large enough that they need larger food. I know everyone one on here has a different opinion on this subject, but it is something you may want to think about. Should you ever want to change to pre-killed, the sooner you switch over, the easier it will be.
As for your mice situation, I would get the phone book out and call all of your small independent pet shops. They ususally buy mice from independent customers living in the area of their shops. Also remember that as long as your snakes are in good health, BP can go for a long time without food. One of ours just went 5 months without eating and I just talked to a man that has a 23 yr old BP that he hatched and has raised. This snake only eats 4-5 times per year and has gone for over one year without eating. So, do not worry if you can not find food right away. Call your small pet shops. I am sure you will find a food source.

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
$5 for a mouse from Petsmart?????? that's insane!!!! I thought Petsmart was Corporate, and all store prices are about the same...the Petsmart by me has mice for $1.50.....regardless, I don't go ther for my mice anyway, cause the mom-n-pop store by my job sells there mice for $1....:P!!

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
I have tryed F/T mice and they wont touch it ... If the mouse is stuned that is fine ...as long as it is breathing. As for Petsmart.. They sell only"fancy mice" some F :cens0r: up long haired tiny mice ... Some designer breed or something. I called them to ask where they are getting there mice from, they gave me a # to call . I asked the breeder if he would sell me bulk mice and he said to quote "Not unless your a local pet shop and you have your licence" VERY RUDE!!
So I desided to go down to petsmart and buy a cupple of the mice. The guy asked me what one I wanted. I said what ever 2 he could get. He looked at me funny and asked what I was useing the mice for? I told him and he left, came back with 2 other people, one being the manager.
Did you know they have the right not to sell you an animal if they feel it will be harmed? I can understand if I was going to put a fire cracker up it's *** but Im feeding a snake...
God Darn Animal Loveing Greenes!
I didnt mean to offend any one if I have.
Sorry Im just a tad bit upset
I'll shut up now.

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
Unfortunately the store has the right to sell its animals to whoever they like. If it is policy then you can't get around it.
I am lucky enough to have found a ranch that supplies rats and mice near me and I can buy direct now. They just fussed at me about not having a tax ID. I was worried until he explained he would HAVE to charge me tax if I couldn't produce one. I was like "Duh!! Charge the tax dude! I didn't know you weren't!" Turns out they had been bc the regular person had asked me about it early on.
But at any rate, mine all eat live, I just never leave them with it unsupervised. I have 49 right now, and most of them eat right away, if they don't after a max time of 20 minutes I pull it out until next week. This way when they don't eat I haven't wasted a F/T and next week it will just be fatter than ever.
I know the bennies of feeding F/T but for me, live is more convienant, and it isn't about the thrill of seeing them kill. I get no thrill from it. It is not exciting to me to see it. It is just the snake eating. I am happy to see them eat.
I wish I could ship you live mice but I haven't a clue how one could even do that, and the shipping would cost more than getting those $5 mice.

So true ... I have found ways of dealing with shipping live rodents (I used to be a Herp store Maneger of keeping and husbandry of rodents. DuraPlastic is great for Shipping rodents)
I never leave my snakes alone with mice... my little female had a large rat in with her when I got her and he did a number to her...

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
PetSmart prices their mice so high, because they are against what they perceive as cruel to the animals that they sell as pets (and their mice are being sold as pets). They figure that if they price them higher, they won't be a regular source for feeding snakes (or that's how I understand it). They also don't sell ball pythons.
PetCo - on the other hand does sell ball pythons and does sell mice at a lower price. Depends on the store - if you have a "good" reptile person working there, they don't give you much guff about buying feeder mice. If not, they tend to feel it's cruel too, and encourage you to buy their f/t instead.
They're still more expensive than a mom and pop run store. I need to get into the phone book myself and see if I can find another source, because mine just went up in price and won't give me discounts, despite how much I spend with them each week.
However, I must say, my little unexpected litter of mice is having me question if I shouldn't try to find room to breed a few litters - not necessarily enough to feed all my snakes each week, but enough to help supplement the cost some. At 14 days old, they are awfully cute! But not cute enough to feed off when they get big enough. For now, they've mostly been fascinating to watch their daily changes.

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
I'm sorry that you lost all those mice. But if you only have two snakes to feed...why not just go to any pet store and buy a male and female mouse, and start breeding them again? You would be honest in stating that those mice are not for feeding purposes. And your snakes can wait a few weeks for new mice if you can't find feeders any place else.

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
Petsmart dosent cary males. I have to wait untill I get a car to find other places around here. I only go to petsmart because the gal nextdoor to me works there

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
I'm in toccoa Ga about 1 hr north of atlanta. I breed my own rodents for my collection. I don't know how many you are needing but I can probably sell you around 50 mice and however many rats you need. email me if you're interested.

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
Sorry to hear your supply is dead.
Our house has tons of spiders and centapeeds.
Occasionsal wasp (where they come from I dunno...I think Mikey the cat invites them in for play time), and ants. Everything you would find in your garden we get! Its Nuts!!!! We live on the second floor and those bad mothers still find away into the house.
Im glad you posted this....
We are going to spray the outside of the house as well as the inside soon and I never thought about the rats. The snakes should be fine since they are in a seperate room in which no bugs are so no spray.
I know what ya mean about pricey pet stores.
I have a male feeder rat who Im so tempted to "accidently" let out and "wonder" into Lucy and Fat Ma's cage. make me some feeder babies!
The thing is Khan eats live weanlings to pups and Lola is eating med-large rats f/t. Id have to keep the supply of live for Khan. i come home each weekend with rats and ratsiciles and it freaks out my family.

Re: Any one living in GA around Atlanta please read. HELP!!!
I was wondering how your snakes are doing as it has been awhile sense your mice died. As your mice died after the outdoor spraying, I was concerned that your snakes might have been taking longer to show signs of sickness from the spraying.
Thanks, Teej
