Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
Well, Unut went into the vet today to get altered, the other two were *very* upset about this. Soon as I walked in from dropping Unut off, Daphne had her ears pricked in my direction with a very intense look like "Where's the baby!!"
I wait up, and it's taking much longer to hear back from them than I was told. DURING surgery they were all "Where's the Uterus?" and it turns out Unut is a boy, but is so young the testes are bitty and hard to find. He would have had to have through the belly surgery anyway, as his testes haven't dropped, but man, what a way to find out... poor kid! Although because he was neutered before they dropped, we get to avoid the whole male dominance/digging/spraying issues of teenagerdom altogether. w00t! However, because they were looking for girly bits initially, his urethra (I so wouldn't know that word if it wasn't for King Of The Hill) got tugged a little and there's a little blood in his pee, but they said that should go away.
Unut's sewed up tummy is about the saddest thing to behold, right now.Poor baby! And he is SO sleepy. He's curled up with his plushie right now in his private cage, being uber groggy. He's high on pain meds, and the thing is to get him to eat. Normally he's a piggie, but he wants nothing to do with it right now. He gets meds twice a day for a week to prevent infection, since his immune system is a bit off -low white blood cells. He's also got to be just him and his plushie for 7 to 10 days in the healing cage.
He already pooped ,but if there is more blood in his urine, I need to call them asap. Few can say they've been spayed *and* neutered. Unut's special! I hope he takes meds as easily as Daphne did after her surgery... *crosses fingers* Here's to a very fast recovery for our little gender bender!
And yes, we're leaving the name the same even though he's named after a goddess. We're all about the gender bending over here. Besides, a Pharaoh named himself after Unut and so can our bunny, lol. Boy's so pretty everybody thinks he's a girl. "Who's mommy's little visual kei glam rocker, yes him is!" Unut sounds pretty gender neutral to those not in the know too, so it works.

Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
poor baby!
How much does getting your bunny fixed cost?
I gotta get my cat done...ive put it off way way way to long
-
Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
Cat should be cheaper than a rabbit, rabbit spays usually run around $200 and up not including the pre and post checkup, and Unut's being an inturrupted spay/unplanned neuter all at once was definitely under the "and up" category :groinkick But she... pardon HE is more than worth it. I was like... 9 or so when my cat was spayed, so I have no idea what that cost.

Poor little guy. Hopefully he'll make a speedy recovery. :)

If it's not too late to change his name, maybe you can change it to Eunuch. :P Sounds pretty close to Unut, but now a little more fitting.

:zerb: lol! We're leaving his name Unut, and it's bad enough I'd already been telling people how it's pronounced is like what a squirrel thinks when he sees an acorn. "Ooo, Nut!" Oonut, Unut. Now people are laughing because the way his surgery went it takes on a whole new meaning. But hey, everyone'll remember now to pronounce Unut now!

Yup, that's pretty much exactly what happened, lol!
And I'm SO relieved he's eating! Poor baby, what a day... *spoils and pampers an Unut* I made an icon of him today too. Such a little sweetie...

Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
Poor little Unut! I've no doubt though, that the little darling will recover quickly and completely under your tender care! And gets an awesome little icon for all the suffering!

Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
Thank you! So pitiful... when Karen came home she took one look at him and went "Oh, poor baby, his eyeliner is all messed up!"
I think I have icons of all my critter kids now... except for Neptune, he needs an icon. :) (If you're curious, here's my dorky icon collection at it's finest... geeky fandoms and critters, that's me.)

Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
Poor thing...I remember when I brought my cat Cato home from getting neutered...he was a limp furry sack of bones.
I think Unut is still a great name, regardless of his gender. =) I hope he gets to feeling better soon!

Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
Poor babies... it's hard, but it's what's best for them! And thank you, Cassandra, I love his name too! :)
He is doing great, btw! He *likes* his medicines and is eating and pooing as he should! No more blood in his urine either! Still looks pitiful as can be, but doing better already with his sad pink shaved belly. It's not easy getting spayed *and* neutered!

Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
lol, thanks for the reminder, Sweety!! *changes sig* Unut's feeling TONs better right now! Zipping around the cage, sitting up and begging for attention.. But I'm supposed to keep him separated and in the sick cage till Tuesday, so poor boy's gotta hold tight!
Ever see the Secret of Nimh? Remember the youngest mouse at the end? "But Mooooom, I feel fine!! I don't wanna stay in bed!" That's Unut about now, lol.

Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
poor lil Unut!!!! I want to get a friend for Lucky, my green(at the moment) bunny.....would love to get a rex or lion head..soo cute!
-
Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
Those are both adorable breeds! I highly recommend poking around http://www.petfinder.com/ when you're ready for a rabbit rescue that'll let you take Lucky in to date around your favorite picks! That's how we got Bowie, and it made bonding tons easier. Here's a link to how our first bonding experience went, not dial up friendly as it's in picturebook form practically, lol. There's nothing like a pair of happy cuddly bunnies... cept maybe a trio, lol. :) It's also cheaper to get a bun from a rescue, as they come spayed and neutered!

Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
Wow, that's quite a story there! Were your rabbits hanging out with my BPs? (you know, how I thought the one was male and the other, female?) lol. At least you know now!

Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
lol, apparently they have! All our gender fluid babies :D
Dr. Ross told me that she, Dr. Frank, and 2 techs *all* checked him out and were quite sure he was a girl. 4 professionals were completely fooled by our little man's feminine wiles, and carefully tucked away boy bits. Surprise!
He just got his last after spay/neuter checkup, and he's doing great btw. :) He's gained almost a whole nother pound in the last week! That's 3 pounds a week! Dr. Ross was fussing over him, and so impressed with how well behaved and cooperative he is. He's in perfect health, recovering quickly and beautifully, and more than one person mentioned how unusual it is for them to see such sweet friendly rabbits as our boys (Daphne cops an attitude, lol) and so well socialized to boot.
She went on to say that one of her favorite things about her job is when she sees special pets like Unut with such a loving family. In my sleep deprived hormonal state, I almost started crying right there. She said that sometimes people would come in with special pets and they think "What a shame... that pet is so smart, or that pet is so needy, or the person has the pet for the wrong reasons..." And then sometimes, she gets to see amazing, smart, sweet animals in the perfect sort of home for them like ours. I continued to resist crying on the way home. What a beautiful thing to say to me...
I've gotten really close to Unut too, over the last week. I was pretty much the only company he's had while he's been recovering and he's that much more relaxed around me and about getting picked up etc. I'm so grateful for all our critters, they keep me sane. :)

I have to say that she's just tellin' it like it is. :P During our brief visit to your apartment, I was majorly impressed that you could have so many animals in such close quarters and it didn't smell at all...things may have been cluttered but it was clean. And all the animals were so obviously beautifully cared for, loved on, pampered, spoiled, loved, loved, loved. (And not "loved" in the sense of the old lady with 37 cats because she can't bear to fix them or to give away the kittens!)
You can use me as a reference for on a pet-adoption application any time!

Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
It must be so hard to be a vet or vet tech and see the idiot owners that come through a practise and then see ones like you and Karen that truly love and understand each of their unique pets. :)

Re: Bunny Gender Bender (TMI)
Awh, you guys are too sweet!
And thank you, Judy! Karen says she's really relieved it doesn't smell, cause she worries sometimes we might just be used to it and not know what it really smells like. Come to think of it though, the guy who came in to fix the leaky A/C asked how we keep the rabbits from smelling (his son used to have a hutch bunny) and I just blinked and shrugged saying we change the litter box regularly and they do the rest.
We do love our critters to bits. Every last one of them. I look forward to getting a bigger place for them to enjoy.
