Lookit the critter I adopted today......
When into my local Petco today to get some crickets for my T, and say hi to my buddies, and someone had just surrendered this tokay gecko....I know they're not really "handleable" pets, but it came with the cage and everything, so I said what the heck......

was going to name it Damien, but...I think it's a female (aren't the hemipenile bulges pretty obvious on geckos?).....perhaps you gecko gurus out there can clear it up for me........

Re: Lookit the critter I adopted today......
i have no idea how to sex these guys... but i do know that on the tarantula list i visit... (venomlist.com) a tokay won the photo contest for this year :)
absolutely beautiful!!! what do they eat? crickets?
Re: Lookit the critter I adopted today......
yeah, they eat crickets Rec goddess....in fact I picked up a bunch while I was there, and threw about a dozen or so in there for "Damien", and the poor thing must've been so hungry it ate almost all of them within an hour or so!!! I still wish I knew the sex of this lil beauty so I can decide on a name!!!...gecko peeps out there..????..help?
Re: Lookit the critter I adopted today......
Looks male to me. See the pre anal pores? Tokays eat mainly insects but usually they will try anything. They commonly accept fuzzies and roaches are great. Easier to fill a Tokay up on large roaches than nasty and smelly crickets. Although almost all are foar from tame, I know someone from a different fourm that has handled hers before. Nice Gecko and Good luck!!

Thanks Pork chops n cornbread!!!! that was really helpful!!! I have changed it's name to Chomper though, and can only handle him with a glove....I try not to handle him at all, cause I know of their pit-bull clamp-on-and-won't-let-go bite. He is a beautiful creature nonetheless, and fun to watch eat. I love his bark too! ....mmm...... pork chops n cornbread....mmmm......

Your welcome but they just call me PCNCB for short. lol If you want to make the cheap initiall investment, non climbing roaches of some sort would be something to look into and no they won't infest your house
Re: Lookit the critter I adopted today......

Are you serious? They are cleaner and have a higher meat/shell ratio than most crickets usually. No smell at all and they wat anything and take no skill or time to get them to breed.

Both sexes call, but only the males do the "to-kay" call. Congrats on your new addition, I love those lil' scaley bull-dogs!
