    african land snail
picked up one other pet for my daughter... meet Sam!

She'll get 11" full grown size. Eats veggies and needs a lot of calcium so we put a cuttle bone into her enclosure and she'll be happy.

that's cause they are illegal in the US - up here in Canada it's illegal to import and to release... but not to keep as pets. Of course, as a responsible pet owner... you never release anything to the wild.

In Africa... they eat these for dinner!

actually i didn't really. i was over at someone's house (dropping off silkworms) and checking out all of his cool stuff. he has a breeding pair of p. mettalicas!!! ohhhh yaaaa baby we got to see them IRL and they are soooooooooo gorgeous... esp the female. anyway, i was telling him how bug crazy my daughter is. she carries a bug book with her everywhere so she can identify any bugs she sees LOL We have an organic yard which is like a tropical rainforest so she gets to find lots of them!

Anyway... he was showing me the millipedes and I asked him how much $$ - he said $3 so I said... oh I've got to get her one... she'll go nutty over this... and he said, "oh ya, well she'll go even nuttier over this one" and tossed it into the container. :)

and there we have it... another weird pet in the stephenson house LOL

hahahaha homeschooling is so much FUN!!!

oh yes she is. and when i was done taking photos of her snail this morning i went to put him back and she sternly explained to me that snails DO NOT like being taken off something they are stuck to. i should just leave it alone and she'll make sure he makes his way back into his enclosure! (cause mom, why do you think they shrink right into their shell... cause they're scared of YOU that's why!!! *said with a definite DUH!!! at the end*)

she then told her dad that when he puts the little steriline containers back on the shelf under her fish tank he is to hold on with BOTH hands until they are safely on the shelf... then he can let go!

    (yes, she's 7)

Does your daughter watch Sponge Bob Squarepants and love his pet snail as much as my son does? LOL What a cool pet! Though I'm sitting here at my computer giggling insanely at the thought of you all standing around waiting for the slowpoke snail to slime it's way back home and forget the whole mating snails thing and hahahahahahaha...oh heavens if I'm finding this all that funny I need a nap...badly! LOL

    Congrats on the new pets!

thanks... i think so too :)

slither, i'm guessing they are illegal because in the lower states they could survive the winter and would multiply very quickly... eating many crops.
