Re: Help pls
Ohhhh geez hon....don't stop here! Get that poor thing to a VET right now!!
-
Re: Help pls
Hi,
It's a bit hard to be certain but looks like either scale rot or a burn (my eyes are almost as blurry as the camera).
But I'd have to say if it was mine I'd be half way to the vets by now.
All new animals need a check up anyway so it's not like it would be an uneccessary trip if he said nothing was wrong (and he won't) cos that looks like it hurts.
You might want to find out what your neighbour did to it to make sure it never happens again.
and welcome to the forum - now go get the vet to help that poor little thing.

-
Re: Help pls

-
Re: Help pls
but the thing is the 2 weeks i had it i had exams and stuff but now that im done with them i got all the time
-
Re: Help pls
Find a 24 hour emergency vet if possible. You need to get him in today or tomorrow at the latest, even if you have to take off school.
-
Re: Help pls
i cant miss skool and theres no 24hr vet and i will go asap saturday
-
Re: Help pls
Tell us where you are located and just maybe someone from here will be both close enough AND willing to take on the enormous responsibility of rescuing and rehabbing such a deeply injured snake. That is no small task....nor an inexpensive on. That poor snake needs someone with both time and money right now.

Re: Help pls
polak,
talk to your parents and explain to them that your snake really needs to see a vet, then call around to find a vet who works with snakes and ask them how much a visit will cost.
take this one step at a time and don't feel bad... everyone has to learn!

Re: Help pls
Hi again,
Ok if your folks dont agree to take you to the vets and have time of school to do it (and I really ,really hope they do), then theres a couple of things to be aware of.
I'd keep the poor thing on something sterile and easily cleaned (newspaper at a push). At no point in time try and pull the loose shed skin hanging from it's belly - it's very likely you would open up the wound and provide another point for infection etc.
Make sure the tank is kept at the proper temperatures - the caresheets on this site will tell you what those should be.
I hope she pulls through - keep us posted if you can.And if someone on this board has better advice to give about care before he manages to get to the vets could they sing out as I've never had to deal with anything like that and hope never to have to.
In Britain we have an organization that will treat animals whose owners cannot afford regular vets for a donation (I think they are called the P.D.S.A) of generally about £5.It might be worth looking for something similar in Canada if it would speed up getting the treatment started.

Re: Help pls
what are you using to heat the tank?
-
Re: Help pls
hi,
Do you know what actually happened to the snake?
Also make sure it has plenty of drinking water as it could get quite badly dehydrated - I'm not sure I would give it anything it could fit in as a water bowl though - hopefully someone will know better than I do about that.

Re: Help pls
Oh my lord, that is the most serious thing I have ever seen. I don't even know what to say- I know there is something helpful to say in the back of my mind, but there are some serious words for your neighbors blocking them from coming out.
I really, really hope you can either find someone to surrender that snake to or manage to keep it alive under your care. That is going to take some serious $$$ and love. If you aren't up for it, I would suggest finding someone ASAP.

Re: Help pls
im going to do what it take to keap my snake

Re: Help pls
Yes, vet, asap...I'm glad you have an appointment for Saturday. It's unfortunate you can't get him in sooner...
What it looks like is that the snake has been badly burned by either an uncontrolled under tank heater (UTH) or by a "hot rock", those used for desert lizards but absolutely terrible for snakes. Snakes are ectothermic, so they gather their heat from the environment. If the only heat source is an uncontrolled UTH or a hot rock, both of which get waaay hotter than a snake can handle, the snake will use it for heat but will literally begin to cook and burn.
What happens after is that the dead, cooked/burned flesh on the belly begins to rot. This is called necropsy - and can be quickly fatal as you can imagine.
Getting the animal to the vet as quickly is possible to stop this process and start the healing is vital to enable the snake to have a fighting chance. It can take several months of proper (and expert) care to turn a snake in this situation back to completely healthy.
For an example of this process, have a look at the following thread. One BP.net's members, goldenburm, took in this badly damaged ball python with burns and necropsy and the snake has made a full recovery:
http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...ghlight=rescue

Re: Help pls
It might also be worthwhile to phone the vet as soon as he opens and ask if there is any interim advice he could give. He may ask you to (very ,VERY gently) clean the wound with some kind of mild reptile friendly disinfectant - or,conversely, he may feel that leaving it as is would be better.
The link cassandra posted has some excellent advice in it and shows that recovery is possible.

Re: Help pls
Did you actually pay money to your neighbor for this snake? If you did i would demand my money back in order to defrain some of the vet bills. In my 9yrs experiance with reptiles and running a rescue for a short time i have never seen anything as bad as that poor snakes injuries.Does this neighbor have any other pets? If so are they neglected also? If the answer to the latter question is yes turn them into your local animal authorities!!! Please keep us posted

Re: Help pls
i payed 50$ only but if he demands for money well im going to tell him pay the vet bill but one thing is for sure i aint going to give him the snake back thats for sure i was suposto give him 200$ but now he will only get the 50$ and he can do what ever he wants and the first thing i will do is bring him to court if he does something stupid thats for sure
-
Re: Help pls
he only had the snake but it was at his parents house and he is living with his gf and he was going once a week to see his bp
-
Re: Help pls
If he has any problems with you paying, just tell him you will report him for crualty to animals, I don't know if you can do that where you live, but here in the states we have a lot of organizations that focus on crualty prevension.
If anything else you may want to soak him in a light mixture of betadine in warm water, it will atleast help disinfect it and kill any bacteria on the surface.
Good Luck!!!
OOOOPS! I guess joe beat me to it on the animal control issue

Re: Help pls
well for now he is in a nice clean place and im going to go at 10am to the vet saturday and let see how much its going to cost me and for sure if he wants it back he will have to bring me to court and for sure he will lose and he will end up paying me for the bills

Re: Help pls
Polak,
You are very welcome. I only did for you what i would have done for any thing in that condition.
For those of you reading Polak sat on a messenger and had his web cam on and I talked him though everything he needed to do right away to make the tank as sterile as possible and give the snake as little stress as possible. He did everything. Cleaned out the tank and laid down newspaper, took everything out that wasnt needed, and got a small water dish for drinking only. and even made the sanke a new hide out of a shoe box that it went for straight away.
His tank is now set up perfect and clean.
this took the better part of an hour and in my mind was time well spent. He is showing true dedication to this snake.
If he continues with the care i laid out and follows the vets instructions this snake will make a good recovery.
Polak keep up the good work. and koodoes to you. the snake gods smiled down on you with this little guy. I know where their eyes were now when my 3 escapees went missing. It was for a good cause.
Regards,
Beauty the BP

Re: Help pls
Just thought I'd clear up this little bit of information, Cassandra and I certainly don't mean anything by it other than giving the proper information. A NECROPSY is performed after an animal is dead. What you are talking about is NECROTIC skin.
-
Re: Help pls
Beauty...Again, you truly do show your nurturing side. Thank you for being there for this kid where some of us couldn't. Let's hope the little guy/girl can make it through to saturday.
OH. I also wanted to say one thing. The wounds depicted in the picture look a little more familiar to me. When my sister was about twenty, a friend of hers gave her his ball python. One day, she left the tank open and this gorgeous girl got out. She'd gotten underneath the boxspring of her bed which was on the floor and because it was so broken and ripped to shreds, it tore against her belly. Needless to say, -I- took care of her. I would wipe her down with neosporin, and I would feed her. I would make sure she shed well, and I would clean out her tank. After a few months and a few good sheds, she came around.
Polak: You really need to find out WHAT exactly happened. Whether it's nycrosis or something like my experience, you need to find out. And I would definitely tell him that $50 is the limit. No more money from you to him. In fact, I'd ask for your money back to pay for the vet bill. Then, I would call some sort of law enforcement and have him charged with cruelty to animals. Jesus.

Re: Help pls
That is the worst case I have ever seen......I would report the nighbor for animal cruelty...it's that bad.

Re: Help pls
Im so glad that you got that snake out of there, and that you found this site. Welcome, newbie! ;) If I was in your position, I'd give you neighbor a few choice words, then tell him he gets no money whatsoever, laugh, slam door, repeat.

He actually wanted $200.00 for a badly injured snake that obviously was injured in his care and likely as a result of his negligence as an owner? Personally I would tell him firmly (or have your parents do so) that he's lucky he got $50.00 and not a visit from animal care and control and that if he wants to push for the rest of the cash you have photo's of the damage he did to this snake. Remember in future when and if you ever do another rescue, get something in writing that the person is releasing the snake to you and has no further claims on it or you. Best to be very clear about who owns the animal as you don't want to work hard to bring a snake back and then have the idiot who hurt it show up and want it back again.

Re: Help pls
The reason I'm tough on this point is the rescue we did with Rauri the BCI. The twit who couldn't care for him kept referring to him as "her" snake long after she'd turned him over to us. I finally had to nicely but firmly state to her face that I had her sign a piece of paper confirming that Rauri was to be fostered by Mike and I for permanent placement with Becky at a later date and Rauri was in no way "her" snake any longer. We worked hard with Rauri to bring him back from the belly burn/impending rot and to make sure he was socialized and any issues with his general health and his damaged lungs were dealt with. No way was this girl, who apparently could not even figure out how to join a forum to learn to care for what she bought, going to get her hands on him now that he's 100% better than the mess he was when we got him.
If you do rescue, do it in writing. You deserve that protection and so do the creatures you rescue.
