Hiss!
Wow, so tonight i was about to take gem out. I decided to clean her water bowl, so afterwards, the bowl was a little hot from the hot water, so i put the bowl in her cage, I then proceded to take the hide off from on top of her, and once i get the hide off, i hear this LOUD hissing.
Haha, it spooked the heck out of me, heh.
I didn't think BP's hissed much.

Re: Hiss!
my male, zulu, got mad one time and hissed really loudly. i was afraid he was gonna bite me but he actually has never attempted biting me. sometimes when they come out at night i can hear them "talk". kinda a quiet, short hiss when they are cruisin about their tubs.

Re: Hiss!
Yeah, I never heard the hiss with my original 2 BP's. But when I got my het albinos (i heard they have attitude!) i was very, very suprised by the noise that came out of them! They puff all up and use all the energy they can to make that "hiss"!
You can't help but find it cute though :aww:

Re: Hiss!
Hehe, it freaked my wife out, but it cracks me up :). They fill their lungs with air, and you can see them holding it, waiting... waiting, then if you move near them. SSSSSSSSSSSSSSsssssssssssssssssss like a leaking baloon.
then PUFF back up, and at it again.
I don't provoke her, but when im cleaning she makes sure to let me know she doesnt appreciate it. Ive never had one strike at me that was hissing, it seems like either they strike to intimidate, or they hiss to intimidate.
It's funny how universal hissing is, I know cats, snakes, and probably some other animals do it :)

a lot of monitors and beardies do it too.

so will bp hiss to comunicate sometimes or only when trying to intimidate. I have two bp's and I think it might be cool to hear them "talk" unless it means theyre aggitated.

Re: Hiss!
Even cockatiels (and other parrots) hiss.. I find that more scary than most snake hisses!
My doves hiss at me when I look at their eggs.. but they just make me laugh, they're not scary. :)

Re: Hiss!
ah yeah i forgot to mention my cockatiels hiss too... or i should say my wife's, they hate me :(

Re: Hiss!
I thought Gomez was hissing at me once when it was really our cockatiel sitting on the cage next to his, lol. Took me a second. Funny when little birds do it, especially softbills, but I'd be backing *way* up if a macaw or cockatoo was hissing at me!
Getting used to lots of hissing with Neptune around though. I swear, when you try to pick that boy up it sounds like someone's turning on a malfunctioning fire hose!

Re: Hiss!
Our little het albino male, Malachi, will hiss if you are removing him from his comfy hide but hey I figure I'd hiss too if I was happily hanging out and some giant grabbed me up LOL. He doesn't strike then but will do so on feeding day but again, I'm happy as that just indicates he's ready to go and has a great feeding response. The only other hisser in the house is one of our females, Kyna, who will occasionally do this slow, quiet hiss if you bother her. I swear it sounds like the equivalent of a snake sigh...as if to say..."lord it's those idiots again" LOL. We call it her "hiss off" hiss.

Re: Hiss!
Yeah softbill hisses are cute and all.. but I was bitten by an umbrella cockatoo once.. parrots scare me, but I just love them anyway.
Harry the burm and Julinar the suri hiss like there's no tomorrow, but neither has ever offered to bite. They're my talkers.

Re: Hiss!
My group has never hissed YET.Probably will soon.

Re: Hiss!
I have one girl that hisses at me if I don't give her enough warning, and only during the day. She doesn't like her beauty sleep disturbed. ;)

Re: Hiss!
Lola hissed the second day we had her. We brought her out and she saw Mickey (my cat) and hissed. Freaked Dan out. I started laughing cause I couldnt believe the snake hissed rather then the cat. Maybe it was Dans imagination cause I didnt hear it.
Now Mikey takes a nap every after noon in Khan and Lolas room on a recliner that sits right across from Lolas tub. I sometime catch her moving around on that end but since then I havent heard any hisses.
