    Where to get prey items?
Hey, I have been looking into getting a few more BPs, and it made me realize that the local pet stores pretty much suck for prey items. I would prefer to feed f/t, and the largest f/t prey items I can find around here are adult mice, and on top of that the prices suck. This will be fine for now, but I don't want to end up a few years down the road and start needing larger f/t items and have them be difficult to obtain.

I've asked the pet store employees, but of course they are pretty much useless, so I figured I'd come and ask on here where the people actually know things.

Where do you guys get yours from? Can you order them online? I live in Chicago.

    Thanks,
    James

Well, I raise my own rodents, but I understand that isn't desirable to some people.

There are many online places where you can order frozen rodents from.. such as rodentpro.com the mouse factory.. many others. Do a google search and you'll come up with a ton of stuff.

    Thanks for the reply.

Right now I haven't got the capacity to breed my own, or I would. Living in an aparment building in the city doesn't really afford you those options. Maybe after college I will end up somewhere that I can, but for now I have to buy my prey, be it frozen or live.

as april mentioned there are lots of good places online. i feed live myself, but as i have started to become more involved with the local herp society i have found out they place group orders 3 or 4 times a year and order like 2-3 thousand at a time. this way the prices are super cheap and they usually pick them up to avoid shipping. maybe one of the local herp societies does the same. paying for shipping for an individual order is the only down side.

The Mouse Factory is great. A little higher priced, but oh so worth it. They do a great job packaging and sizing. :gj:

We have a review section. (slightly underutilized) Anyone that has a recommendation to make should feel free to write a little blurb!! (hint hint nudge nudge ;) )

Wow, you guys got this taken care of quick! Thanks.

I wish I had a place to store a ton of frozen mice....those shipping prices are crazy. How would I go about finding someone who would want to go in with me on an order? I really only have room to store maybe 50 rat pups, tops. If I were to buy 375 the shipping would be exactly the same.

I don't know how close you are to streamwood IL, but there's a reptile swap there twice a month that always has frozen rodents available at good prices (plus no shipping charges when you buy local)

Plus that it's a ton of fun there. :)

    Streamwood is near Schamburg, right?

If so, then I am pretty close. I live in Chicago right now, but I am originally from Huntley. I go back every couple weekends to visit, and Schamburg is pretty much right on the way.

I will definately check that meet out. Thanks! :sweeet:

Yes it is quite close to Schaumburg. You're sure to enjoy yourself if you go there. It's very hard to not come home with an animal!

i still say talk to the local herp society. they may do group orders or at the least you can ask at a meeting if anyone else would like to go in on an order.

How far are you from the suburbs? Chicago Reptile house in Orland Park sells frozen rats/mice, but it might be a bit of a drive for you.

Here is a website for a person that breeds feeder rodents in Illinois, might be able to get some there.

Big Cheese is awesome quality and so is American Rodent. Both will send Greyhound to your local terminal for around $20 (minimum for an order). ARS will ship 2 day UPS. My last order was like $15 shipping.
