The pet we could never own
I know all of us have a certain creature you'd love to own, but by law we can't own them. If you could have one critter you could own, what would it be?

For me personally, I've always loved komodo dragons. Such a huge, ferocious, dangerours lizard!

I'd like a pair of hyenas. Not sure why, I just think they're interesting.

Imagine the looks I'd get taking them out for a walk!!

If I could have any animal, it would probably, within at least a five-acre lot with great habitat, be an ocelot or a pair of snow leopards.

I'd like to have my own zoo...but if I had to choose only one, it would be a Bush Baby, they're so darned cute with those big eyes! Or maybe a flying fox, they're adorable too...Hmm. :D

Dolphins and whales. All shapes and sizes of them. Actually...any of the sea-going mammals...... I'm always awed and mesmerized by them.

    A flock of platypii!

A wolf I could name Fenris.

A sloth or three so I could feel more productive (though I guess we could count our boys in there ;))

Some of these animals you actually could own.. including zebras, but they're quite aggressive and can be very dangerous. Have you guys ever seen a zorse? (half zebra half horse hybrid)

I have a picture of one that I took at the horse fair this weekend.. probably tonight I'll show you guys some pictures. ;)

A Turkey Vulture.....sitting on a perch at the entrance of my house! I have wanted one for 30+ years.

I have actually tried to obtain a chick from a nest once. Never again shall I try. The mothers have a habit of flying above the nest and regurgitating on threatening intruders, not a very pleasent smell or sight. lol

Barn owl, hands down. I still toy with the idea of taking in a rescue bird someday when (knock on wood) we have the space. Burrowing owls are tempting too, so cute! Also a striped domestic skunk, the legalities on those are weird from state to state. Illegal in AZ cuz people think they're born with rabies.

I think a compsognathus would make a perfect pet. Nothing would be cooler than having a carnivorious, 2 ft tall biped dinosaur running around the house :devilish:

Too bad that they are extinct :(

Not to sound redundant but I love wolves too. I could also go for a polar bear and a tiger myself. You just gotta love those big powerful animals. Of course I could just move into the zoo and be a very happy camper.

Either a humpback whale, or an eagle. They are both very beautiful and graceful. If it was up to Mattias, it would be either a white tiger, or a lion.

While I think dolphins and whales and penguins are super cool, I wouldn't want them outside their natural habitat.

Most of my dream animals are quite ownable, I just probably won't have any - those being a burmese python (way too big) and a gila monster (dunno, they just do something for me).

Other than that, for very selfish sushi reasons, my own school of yellow fin tuna would rock! ("Get in mah belly!")

Oooh, lucky!! Barn owls are my all time favorite birds, and burrowing owls are just SO cute. They look like adorable little fluffy hitmen. If I were ever to become an evil overlord of some kind, I would want burrowing owls as my minions. They're somehow adorable and menacing all at once! Not to mention oh so very tiny.

I have a special place in my heart for the Great Horned Owls. I've actually worked with them. I got to work with a rehabilitor, and help administer shots and hold them. (I thought it was going to take off with me!! - so very light but so very strong!!) We had a couple Saw-Whet owls, and omg they were the cutest things on the face of the earth!!! :aww: I started out with the orphaned robins and flickers, then worked my way up to squirrels and beavers. (behave children!! I still can't have an adult conversation about that without whoever I'm talking to starting to giggle) I had some of the coolest experiences working there. Oh and chimney swifts are so sweet too!!

I know some people do use owls in falconry, so technically, you could own one. They are not considered great falconry birds, so they're not terribly popular, but still. I believe some falconers fly eagle owls.. I know great horned owls are one of the more common in falconry.

Mentioned that how cool it would be to have one yesterday, and I find the ad today! I would love one, but at $1500-2000 that's a bit too much for me at the moment....and I have no idea how to care for a wallaby.:P

Does anyone know if its legal to keep a crow? The one critter that I've wanted for years, that would be somewhat practical to keep is a crow, a raven would be better, but I'm pretty sure they're protected.

Re: The pet we could never own
Erin, crows and ravens are migratory birds and therefore protected by federal law. Unless one has a federal permit (these are difficult to obtain), it is a criminal offense, to keep a crow or raven. These laws are sometimes silly in application, (e.g. a game warden treating a kid raising an orphaned crow as a criminal), but in principle, they have a rational basis -- to keep people from buying or selling native birds in pet shops, as was once a common practice. Also this protects birds from idle, would-be pet keepers whose intentions are good, but are so lacking in expertise that they end up abusing the animals.

And as for me, I don't think I could narrow it down to just a few animals I couldn't really have... I think I want an Ark so I can have 2 of everything!! How's that for a sweet zoo?! ;)
