Here are some more pics. I assume these guys are dew lappers and don't need a water dish? Damn cute. Tonight he will be having his meal replacement mixed with baby food peaches...

Sweet little set-up! And he is SO cute!!!
Oh man, I want one! NO Judy, you can't have one. But.... NO! But I.... NO! But but but....

Re: New Crestie from White Plains
very nice enclosure! they do drink water from the sides of the enclosure, leaves, etc. but you can also provide a shallow water dish for them if you choose. since the enclosure is pretty big you might need to "show" him the food dish after a few days if he doesn't seem to be eating out of it on his own. also, if you can get him to eat the cgd without mixing baby food in with it that would be best. it is perfectly balanced as is and adding baby food actually throws off the balance and adds a lot of unneeded sugar. baby food is fine for a treat once a week or so or to get them eating the cgd if they won't eat it without the added flavor. some of my cresteds were eating baby food flavored cgd when i got them and i just reduced the amount of baby food in the mix over the course of a few months and they all readily eat it now plain. you can also give them mashed fresh fruits--mango, strawberry, watermelon, peaches and bananas are some crested favorites. :)
judy NEEDS a multiple crested terrarium. NEEDS it, she NEEDS it! :D

Re: New Crestie from White Plains
Very nice baby Jamie! Congrats! You are gonna love cresties!
-
Re: New Crestie from White Plains
Thanks Em! I mixed 1 part cgd with 2 parts water and a little peach baby food and put it in a shallow dish. I showed it to him and he proceeded to jump through it and go back into his tree. I guess its not time for him to eat yet!
-
Re: New Crestie from White Plains
lol, yeah that sounds about right. :P he may not really be too interested in eating at all for the first few days while he explores and gets used to his new home.
but judy, you know that 3 or 4 cresteds would fit so nicely into that big aquarium. a nice group of females in a naturalistic enclosure...aaaah, so nice... :)

I wasn't sure whether I should have expected him to eat. Thanks Em! He is cute as hell though. Its so funny when he licks his lips. Oh boy..I might need more!!

Re: New Crestie from White Plains
Also, should I take the moss out of there to limit the possibility of impaction?
-
Re: New Crestie from White Plains
if you are just going to feed cgd and no insects than the moss shouldn't be a problem. if you do decide to feed insects you might go with just paper towel substrate, or you can pull or cut the back legs off the crickets and put them in something tall enough that they can't crawl out of and the gecko should learn to eat them out of that.
also, it looks pretty wet in there right now, which is fine since he has been stuck in a dry deli cup, but just make sure that when you do spray it is thorough, but not so much that the cage can't dry completely in several hours.
if you think the lip licking is cute--wait for the eyeball licking. that is SUPER cute! :lick: you are never going to get away with just having one. if you think bps are addicting, just wait! :P

Thanks!!! I am already addicted. I'll wait until I find out the sex of the one I have before deciding whether to get another :)

Re: New Crestie from White Plains
tell me about it! shipping is SO expensive these days. ugh. in any case, you'll probably have to wait at least 2 months before i'll (possibly) be dealing up that way. but you did say you were gonna wait, so it's all good! :P

Yup! I got time...Nothing but time... :)
By the way, thanks everyone for the props on the new Crestie. Sorry I didn't respond to everyone individually! I am exhausted after this weekend of no rest and too much activity! I never even got to building my new hatchling/juvie rack. Although I did go out and get the supplies and flexwatt. I might get crackin tomorrow.

Re: New Crestie from White Plains
Day 2 and my little guy/girl still has no interest in the food except to walk through it. It wont dry and harm the toes will it?
-
Re: New Crestie from White Plains
none at all. it is quite normal for your gecko to finger paint with its food. :) it may be a few days before it decides to eat. i usually don't even offer food at all for the first few days that i have a new gecko but it certainly doesn't do any harm to make it available to them just in case. he will eat when he gets more comfortable and settles into his new home.

Re: New Crestie from White Plains
What are you using for a food dish, I found pill bottles caps perfect to tell if a little gecko is eating. Nice gecko anyways looks very similar to a little guy I have now.

Naww, you wont quit reading our posts, you will continue to read each and everyone of them, and soon , you too will lose all will power and find yourself scrambling to get yourself a crestie! You too will be sucked in....
you know you want one.......
Speaking of just one, you know, you just cant stop at one. They are so cute and they lick thier eye balls! Yes, I speak of experience, started with the one as an X-Mas gift from my daughter, and as of now, have 5.

Re: New Crestie from White Plains
I know...I know....I know!
YES, I want one. Never denied that. LOL I just don't have the faintest idea how to convince my hubby that it would be a good thing. He thinks I'm nuts as it is and is terrified that I'm gonna overflow the house with reptiles. LOL

You could always tell him how cute they are and about how they lick their eye balls..... and how they would not overflow the house, they are too tiny to do that..unless you are giving them your whole living room or something like that.

Re: New Crestie from White Plains
Come over here Judy to the "holding out" corner:couch: ...please...I need company! LOL
So just to focus my growing addiction to gecko's...what's the real difference between leopard gecko's and crested gecko's as far as housing, food types, size at maturity, ability to be handled, ability to be properly sexed, etc. Down the road I'd thought to get a couple of female leopard gecko's as they appeal to me but you all are so nuts about the cresties I'm sort of wondering if they are a better choice....comments?
-
Re: New Crestie from White Plains
How "stinky" are cresties? I know my beardie can leave a gosh-awful smell sometimes, especially if he poops on his basking rock under the heat lamp. Whew!! If I had cresties, I'd want to keep them out in the living room in an attractive viv....but that wouldn't fly at all if they're stinky.
~huddles with Jo in the anti-gecko corner~
Good plan, Jo! Keep 'em talking about husbandry details and they won't have time to taunt us with cuteness!

crested geckos are arboreal whereas leos are terrestrial, so you will need a taller cage for cresteds and a wider/longer cage for leos. leos require a warm spot of about 88 degrees with a thermal gradient to the cool side (similar to bps) whereas cresteds do no require heat and are fine in temps ranging from 65-80 degrees. leos can be fed a staple diet of mealworms, supplemented with crickets, roaches, wax worms etc. cresteds can be fed solely on a diet of t-rex crested gecko diet supplemented with mashed fresh fruits if you wish. they can also be fed crickets, wax worms (occassionally as a treat), roaches and phoenix worms. at adult size cresteds range from 30-60 grams, leos from 45-80+ grams (some females get to be big mommas :) ). leos can be sexed at 1 month of age, male cresteds at 3-6 months of age, female cresteds at 8-12 months of age. some breeders can properly sex female cresteds earlier, but most will not guarantee the sex to be female until the gecko is at least 9 months old. both are easily handled, cresteds possibly being the harder of the two to handle because they jump and are generally faster moving than leos.

beardies can leave some serious STANK! cresteds are not stinky at all. the only reason you would notice a smell with them is if you leave cgd in the tank too long and it starts to mold or if you let their enclosure get too wet without a chance to dry out and it gets moldy. of course, if you put your head down into the tank and take a deep breath right after one of the geckos poops you are probably going to notice something but it is insanely minor compared to the smell that will fill the entire room after your beardie relieves himself. i have a half a room full of crested cages in an enclosed bedroom and the room doesn't stink a bit.

Re: New Crestie from White Plains
Thanks for all the info (see Judy it works...well sorta! lol).
Hopefully I'll get to a couple of reptile shows now that we are in civilization and actually get to see a real live crested gecko. Yes believe it or not I've never seen one...leopard gecko's here and there but northern Michigan didn't seem to be on the migratory pattern of your average crestie lol.
Hmmmmm...maybe I'll just have to get both.....
ACCCCK!!!!!
Darn you ebil gecko people...DARN YOU!!!!!! :taz:
