    Melting holes in tubs
Im done with 60 so far, 340 more to go.

For a shoebox that isnt going to be tight tight sealed, is 6 holes in the front and 4 holes in the side an ok number for a shoebox? holes are the size of the soldering iron (the tip i think is about 1/8th ? maybe a hair biggeR)

    thanks,
    bryan

You never know if it's enough until you get it setup. Sorry that's not much help. I'd set up a sample tub with a water dish and see what you get. If the humidity is too high, you need more holes. :D

    yeah I know..

But the cool part is, with a humidified room, if the humidity is too high, I just switch substrates to adjust it too :P

Yeah I have a lot of holes melted in my tubs. In the summer it's WAY too humid here. I keep a fan running to circulate the air as much as possible. I have to plug the holes in the winter, and sometimes use the humidfier as well.

400 tubs!!! I hope you have a well ventilated area. If you start posting some crazy stuff, I'm going to assume the fumes got to you. :neener:

If it makes you feel any better, I'm soldering holes tonight too!!! Only 20 boxes here, but I feel your pain (and have totally been in your shoes).

Hang in there, and make sure you have lots of airflow while melting that plastic! :bolt:

Well I started doing it on the porch, and out of nowhere it starts raining while the sun is out.... ok, ok, I can take the hint.

I did about 60 in the garage, and took a break. I built a wood box that I set the tub down into, and it is formed to be tight with the sides and the front, and then I have holes drilled in it for a template. Can do about 80 tubs in 1 hr with that, and have it be more uniform.

Now to solder 50 pieces of flexwatt as a break then go back to that again :P

As soon as my rack order arrives, I'll have 78 tubs that need soldering... I suppose I can just send those to you?? :) :P :giggle:

    I'm so dreading that task...

The only thing I don't like besides soldering holes when you have a lot of tubs, is when the plastic melts onto the tip of the soldering iron and the thin strand lands on you and burns you because you are rushing to finish up.

o.O 50 pieces of flexwatt soldering is turning into a long job too, oy :P ahh well

Might not be worth it for 78, but I custom built a box out of 1/2" particle board, I just set the box down in it, and there are holes all around it and i just pop through them really quick. Nice uniform consistant job, no aligning templates, or trying to make them spaced evenly.

You win :( I finally got my rack built, and tested the setup, and 14 holes was not enough, humidity is at like 90% :( oops

The spacing on the tubs can vary, from tight to 1/8th of an inch, the majority are right around 1/8th though, any ideas how many more holes I need to add?

    Re: Melting holes in tubs
Smaller water dishes or more holes will fix that right up. ;) I'd work with one tub. Add 10 more holes and then test again.

It's hard working out the humidity, especially since our houses are much more humid. In the winter I have to plug up half the holes, since the humidity drops dramatically with the usage of our heater. I'm considering having two sets of tubs. One for winter and one for summer. :D

Still think you can do my 78 new tubs in an hour? :) I was wondering how you were doing it so quickly. 14 holes 'eh? Good luck with that!

In a 15 qt tub, I've got over 50 holes... and I still have condensation in tubs right after a shed or urates/poop. With a small room fan, you can eliminate that though.

    15 q vs 5 quart 33%

    .33 * 50 = 16.5

    14 holes is almost = 16.5 holes ;)

Im trying to decide if I should keep doing 40+ of these small holes, or if I should use a few big punches with my soldering iron, I need to see how small some of these hatchlings are going to be first :P
