Humane Way of killing Mice
I was wondering if there any humane ways of killing mice, other than using Co2. If there is a method it will be used on adult mice, but if there are no ways to do it in an humane way than i will make an homemade gas chamber. I have tried a search on these forums and did not find anything. Thanks for the help guys.
Re: Humane Way of killing Mice
You could use cervical dislocation but it takes a bit of practice.
See http://labanimals.stanford.edu/Guidelines/Cerv_Dis.html
See Section IV titled Methods.
Re: Humane Way of killing Mice
Thank you very much, i will have to try this method out. I am currently killing my 5 breeder mice, since they have been canabalizing their young a lot latly and then going to get a few more to start breeding again. These 5 mice will be my backup feed if my breeders are not producing at the moment.
Re: Humane Way of killing Mice
You can also use dry ice, and other CO2 methods to gas the mice as well. If you are interested in that I know there are a few threads about that. I'll dig for them if you want.
Re: Humane Way of killing Mice
Mix 1 cup of white vinegar to 1.2 tbsps of baking soda. It makes 1.2 gallons of CO2.

Re: Humane Way of killing Mice
I have used this method to euthanize many rodents in my time. It is cheap, but more importantly, HUMANE.
Cervical dislocation is very cruel if not done right. I do not reccommend it to those who are inexperienced and have not been shown how to do it correctly.
Re: Humane Way of killing Mice
Yea I was thinking that it would not be humane if i did the cervical dislocation wrong. Since i am not experiaced at it i know i would probably have done it wrong.
Re: Humane Way of killing Mice
Cervical dislocation is also very hard to do on larger animals, like rats beyond pup size :( (At least that I"ve found).
Re: Humane Way of killing Mice
This is a link to another method of Co2. I tend to mess up with chemistry ... and am more adept at just add water.

I've also had good luck using canned air. I use the Fellowes brand found at WalMart. Put the mice in a ziplock or other airtight container, fill container with a good bit of the canned air, and within about 10 seconds their breathing slows, and within about 1-2 minutes, they are gone. It has a sedative effect and I haven't witnessed any struggling.
We have used this at home to put ailing rats and mice to sleep, and they just calmly pass away. You may want to try this if you don't have good access to CO2 or dry ice.

Re: Humane Way of killing Mice
You can build up your own CO2 gas chamber, with pvc and the CO2 bottles used for paintball with a hose. Its probably the most humane way to kill them, plus, a CO2 bottle can last for months or so Im told.
