Cannibalism

Not that this has happened to me, but I was just curious... has anyone ever had a large female eat a smaller male? As I was looking at my 500 gram Albino male locking up a 2000 gram female, I started to have breeder's worry, lol.

Cannibalism has been documented in ball pythons, but if your snakes are breeding there shouldn't be much to worry about.

A 500 gram male on a 2000 gram female is NOTHING. ;)

Hey Adam... thats got to be the biggest female bp I have ever seen.... I dont know alot about them, so I would like to know the lengths of the male and female in that pic please? Or give me something for size comparison.

I am so impressed with that girl! How much does she weigh, and how many eggs were in last year's clutch? What does she eat during the year? I may not be remembering correctly, but I thought I remembered that you showed her one time before as a mouser?

Aren't we supposed to wait for the male to be about 700gram's?That female is huge man what do you call her rack big mama's house.

Has it ever happened to anyone? Put two in, only one comes out?

I don't know an exact weight off the top of my head, but I think at the time of that picture she was about 4600 grams??? .... The largest clutch she's done for me is 14 eggs ... if I breed here year after year she's an 11 - 12 egger ... with a year off she'll do more.

I never worry about putting little guys with big girls ... I've been doing this for a while and can tell when things are going to work or when certain pairs just shouldn't be put together. ;)

I think it depends on the snake, and if it is ready. I've heard of many males hooking up at ~400 grams. I have NO clue the details of how to tell what males can breed younger/smaller but I would imagine age is as or more important as weight, since they need to be producing viable sperm.

I would wonder if the 400-500 gram breeding males who hook up, what percent actually knock the snake up?

I don't think it's so much of if the snake will hook up ... it's more important to know that it's very easy to kill a 400-500 gram male by breeding it. Male ball pythons will literally breed themselves to death if you let them, and the younger/weaker a male is, the easier it is to make that happen.

LOL....I believe she's a bit bigger than the average female bp. But even so, she's nowhere close to "burmese" size or anything...certainly no danger to humans.

4500g = about 10 lbs or so..... certainly not the 150lb burms or retics.. :)

me i'd love a dozen 4500g girls

I'm sure once that fat girl lays her eggs, she'll weigh quite a bit less...remember that before breeding your female, you want to get them as fat as possible so they have enough body weight to convert into eggs as well as to sustain themselves for the amount of time that they won't eat while gravid.

Com'on lesser platty boy! Can't wait to see that clutch pip. =D

(Or is that a platty daddy? Platty somethin'! Woo!)

It's probably that I just haven't seen that many big Balls, but that big girl you bred your Lesser to looked pretty plump. If she was solid, what would a fat one that size look like?

Sadly, I've hit a snag in my Daytona budgeting. :( I haven't given up hope yet, but due to a rescheduling of my sister's graduation I've had a massive drain on my poor $$. Hopefully I can still rally from this, so keep your fingers crossed. ;)

The guy I bought my albino from has a het female who was his garbage disposal when other's wouldn't eat. She's a monster but didn't produce last year because she was too fat.
Well, no more worries about cannibalism. I'll just let them do their thing and hope for a good year. I have about 7 more months until my Het Albino girls are ready to go, and they're pounding rats like crazy!
