hamster

am looking to find an article that show the Nutrient Composition of Whole Vertebrate Prey
and why we musn't feedin the snakes a hamster..

I think a hamster would be fine

The only issue is if the snake decides that they like hamster and only hamster from now on!

Haha. No kidding. Last year, around this time, there was a bear hampster at that the petstore I get my mice from, wanted to get rid of because it was so violent. Ophelia enjoyed him. A lot. Thank goodness she didn't like him THAT much. They're $8 a piece.

Nutritionally speaking, I don't think there is anything wrong with hamsters. The problem is that they are more expensive, and since BPs have a tendancy to imprint on a single type of prey, you could wind up with a BP that is costly to feed.

I would have said the same thing about hamsters until a few days ago.....

At work, an adult hamster was dropped off because it was completely evil and would bite and hiss and carry on, the kids wouldn't touch it. I realize this is the owners fault, but there's nothing we could do for him.

Being a reptile specialty store, often the small mammals that get dropped on us end up as feeders. We've got a large white-throat monitor that is a garbage disposal for rodents, so a colleage of mine tossed the hamster in his cage. I don't know if any of you have any first hand experience with the feeding responses of large monitors, but this hamster fought off the monitor and lived to tell the tale. This monitor eats live medium rats NO PROBLEM. I would have offered the hamster p/k personally, but that's the story with it.

That being said, never in a thousand years would I offer a live hamster to a ball python. If you do choose to offer it as prey...p/k will probably be the smartest way to go.

This hamster really was a badass........after he fought his way out of the monitors jaws, he stood up on his back legs and was hissing or whatever it is that hamsters do. We ALMOST gave him a repreive, but the mangrove monitor looked hungy too ;)

My female bp only eats hamsters, it was my falt but here they are not that espensive

this is an old post, but i just fed one of my 800g female balls a dwarf hamster tonight. i got it all on video too lol. i feel so evil right now :gj:

btw it tried to bite my bp before the bp even struck at it. pissed my ball off and that was all she wrote.

If you ever find that a snake has become "exclusive" to a certain type of feed, then you could always just continue to offer it normal food on it's typical feeding schedule until it becomes hungry enough to eat.

Now I suggest that as a way of getting rid of a pre-existing problem, but DO NOT USE THIS AS A GO AHEAD TO FEED YOUR ANIMAL THINGS YOU CAN NOT CONTINUE TO FEED IT. Just because there is a way of getting it back onto normal food does not mean that you should EVER feed it something it wouldn't typically eat. don't randomly feed it a chick, don't randomly feed it a gerbil, none of that. If you want to move to a new food source that's fine, but I do not condone feeding an animal "treat" animals.

I figured locking this thread was the best way to go. There's no reason to bump such an ancient thread...especially without adding something with some sort of relevant and educational benefit. If someone really feels a need to discuss the merits of using hamsters as feeders and don't find the information they need here, they can start a new thread. :)
