Ball pythons and Preggie women? question!
hello, i'll tell u guys a secret!, no one should know about this. but my wife is pregnant!! "shrugs". dont tell everyone :P :D :D :D :D
well, she's in her 1st month. so, alot of people telling her that the snake might be harmful for her "healthwise". im not sure, she did bring out the point that "snake eats mice!, mice are bad!!" argh!!.. i did tell her that the snake is quite clean "Except when they poo". she was like "you put her on your body and then i come in contact with your body" ... lol
well, im not asking you guys to calm her down, but i need facts. is it harmful? should i take her out of the living room and put her in another room? or give it to someone else until we have a child?
i may have to ask her to read this post. so be honest and dont side with me :P

Re: Ball pythons and Preggie women? question!
I am pregnant, and not at all worried about taking care of my snake. I wash my hands very well every time I clean the cage or handle her, and make sure everyone else who handles her does the same. The mice/rats that your snake is eating are not running all over your house leaving poop everywhere, so you don't have to worry about that.

Re: Ball pythons and Preggie women? question!
I wouldn't worry about it. As long as she washes her hands if she handles anything snake related, you should be fine. I can't think of anything that would endanger a pregnancy.
Oh and congrats! The only thing you should be worried is the upcoming hormonal swings, and the wild cravings. The phrase, "Yes, dear" and "Whatever you want" come in REAL handy. ;) Good luck.

Re: Ball pythons and Preggie women? question!
Not that I have children, but you would take the same precaution as with having any animal as a pet when pregnant - wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap and make sure the pet's surroundings are kept clean.
I mean, not really any different than normal. =)
Hehe, I've actually seen pictures on Bob Clark's forums of a guy's extremely pregnant wife hanging out on the couch with their burmese, watching TV. =)

Re: Ball pythons and Preggie women? question!
I've gotta go with everyone else here. There's more danger to a pregnant woman from a cat's litter box than there is from a snake or the mice it eats. If y'all have a cat, don't let her go anywhere near the litter box or any other place the cat may use for a bathroom. But the snake.....no worries! :D
And congrats!!! Is this your first child?

My aunt has lupus, and our one cat princess has colitus (sp) and since my aunt has virtually NO immune system, she caught a virus from princess not 1,2 or 3 ... But 4 times! Almost one right after another. The doctor even said because of what the cat has, if you are pregnant or have something to lower your immune system, it can be rather nasty to deal with. My aunt had to go to the hospital 2 times. So be more careful with a cat then a snake. Also, congrats!

Re: Ball pythons and Preggie women? question!
That's what I've always heard. Cats can be more "dangerous" for pregnant women than snakes.

Re: Ball pythons and Preggie women? question!

Oh tell me about it! Fresh fruit was my thing...peaches with the first one, oranges with the second, and melons with the third. Heaven help me when they went out of season! And a lot of things I normally enjoyed would make me sick to my stomach and were avoided at all costs. LOL

Re: Ball pythons and Preggie women? question!
come on guys, stop it! Now I want some hushpuppies and some fruit! I don't even think I can get a hushpuppy anywhere near here.

Re: Ball pythons and Preggie women? question!
If you think about it..those amazon women have it way worse off then any of us ladies do....if they can carry healthy babies to term out where there are parasites waiting for you to be their host around every corner.....we got it made.
WASH WASH WASH your hands like youve been doing...best advice I got.
Heck I work in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, thats our first rule!

LOL...it's a favored side-dish for sea food. A doughy kind of bread very similar to cornbread that is deep fried. Quite yummy and probably very fattening!
I have not had the pleasure of Captain D's hush puppies, but I'm sure they are delish! :P

It's not so much the cat being an issues as the risk of Toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is a parasite that can be transmitted to humans from cats (usually when cleaning the litter pan). Generally, it poses no risk to healthy humans, but it can cuase some birth defects in pregnant women.
CDC info sheet on Toxoplasmosis.

I agree completely! I have 2 kids, and was specifically told by my doc NOT to ever clean the litter box, or even be in the same room where I might breathe some dust. (something about something in cat feces can cause miscairages) The doc, who happened to have a BIG burmese beauty, said as long as you dont touch your face before you wash your hands you shouldnt have any problems. The doc said if you come in contact with the snake poo, you could get salmonella if you feed your snake an infected mouse, but even then, wash with antibacterial soup, and you'll be in the clear.

Re: Ball pythons and Preggie women? question!
Salmonella is the issue with handling reptiles. For anyone...not just pregnant women. Toxoplasmosis is the issue with cat feces. It won't harm a normal, healthy person, but it can cause very serious problems with a pregnancy.

I can only hope *grin* this is what happens when you have 4 different sleep disorders in one person. LOL sux bigtime. c'est la vie, non?
I am a walking medical dictionary. kind of like why I like having a snake. you dont have to make sure they dont poo pn the floor, and the only thing worse than cold kittie puke outside your bedroom door at 3am, is WARM kittie puke outside your bedroom door at 3am LOL
once you figure out what you are doing, snakes are easy compaired to a neurotic 1 year old kittie, and 2 6 year old kitties.
