need help choosing what to get next...
okay, i'm soooo in love with red tailed boas... but because of their size, i don't want to get one (just don't have the room for a nice size encl for them) - so i'd like to stay with something that only gets the size of a ball.

of course my dream snake would be a rtb but a dwarf LOL

i have two cornsnakes - valentino and gandalf and my one beautiful fat squishy ball - dexter.

so, what do you all suggest?

Well, a male hog island boa will likely stay under 6'. I know of some breeder age males that are 4.5'.

There are many, many colubrid species to choose from.. kings, milks, corns, rats, and their morphs. Any particular color(s) or patterns you're interested in?

sand boas (kenyan and roughscaled) are lovely little pets.

jungle carpet pythons stay pretty small..

sumatran short tail python or even a blood python

I've recently gotten interested in snakes in the Pituophis family: Bulls, Gophers, and and Pines. I'm actually checking into getting a bull... they can get pretty large---up to 6ft.---but they aren't too heavy-bodied.

Gophers and Pines stay a bit smaller and there are tons of different morphs and colors. And, speaking of colors, there's always Kings and Milks (*cough* *cough* Sinaloan milksnake).

If you are talking about that one listed on Henry's site, it is a differently marked rtb. Its markings may or may not be genetic.

    okay so i've been told:

    Quote:

There aren't to many snakes that only grow to 3', even Children's pythons will get a bit longer than that. Male boas can stay a very manageable size, depending on how much you feed them and to some degree their genetics. You can keep a male under 6 feet pretty much his whole life. This sounds bigger than it really is, a 6 foot boa is very easy to handle even for a child. I have an albino male that is 4 years old now and is only 4.5 feet long and lives in a 2.5 x 2 foot cage. Hog island boas are a smaller race of boa and only grow to about 5 feet for males, usually a bit less.
you boa lovers... (and yes you know who you are) - do you agree with these statements? cause when it comes to anything except balls and corns... i'm completely uneducated.

Re: need help choosing what to get next...
A six foot boa is a pretty manageable snake... for an adult. I wouldn't agree with the child part. Kinky is 6' long and I doubt that I would let a child hold her for any amount of time (and I'm talking 12 and under). It's all right if she's on the floor and kids are around, but she's a big, solid snake, and very strong, even with her condition. If they would get scared, or she would get scared, well... I just wouldn't trust it (my opinion).

Also, there are no guarentees as to how long a male boa will be get. Yes, you could keep a snake's size down if you don't feed him every week. He'll stay small. But why would you not want to feed your snake properly? A properly fed male boa (BCI) can be anywhere from 5-7 feet long. Even bigger sometimes (though not very often).

    Hope this helps.

Re: need help choosing what to get next...
True it is! As adults, A 4 X 2 X 2 is sufficient in my opinion. They are awesome snakes and they go through very cool color changes based on the time of day. There are some good breeders out there so make sure you get a PURE Hog from one of them. I'm not a fan of the crossing of Hogs.

so i realize this may be a stupid question but... what size enclosure will my male ball need when he's grown?

we actually really like rosy boas but everyone we've talked to said they are "boring" - i'm not sure why or how they could be... but i love the colours of the rosies. ;)

although i'm sitting here thinking... the kids don't REALLY need a family room... perhaps we can convert it to a snake room and get a RTB after all LOL (how big would a RTB enclosure be for an adult?) 12 sq ft is it?
