Birds + BP's?

Well, I keep taking over more and more of our house for rats and snakes. I wanted to quarantine some imported BP's Im getting, and the only room that is available right now is the Bird room.

We have 2 cockatiels. Will keeping them in the same room aggravate the snakes, IE because they smell them and want to eat them?

If somehow a BP got loose, would it be a possibility that they might go after the Cockatiels?

No it won't aggravate them. I used to breed mice/rats in the same room as all my snakes, no problem.

I doubt your BP would go after them seeing as BPs are picky creatures, and would not eat birds in the wild.

From what I read I didnt think so either, but these are my wife's birds, and it would be bad if anything happened, heh

Just make sure you wash your hands if you touch the birds before you reach into your snakes area.A person i know recieved a nice bite once because she forgot.I also have tiels in the same room( basement) as all of my snakes and have not noticed any problems.If your snakes are in escape proof cages then you should not have any concerns,plus your wife will still like the snakes lol.

Actually, birds have been found in the stomachs of young ball pythons collected in the wild. I have a field study around here somewhere.

in one of my books on ball pytons it says that in the wild if given the chance they will eat a bird. it is fairly common.

Wow that's interesting Adam.. how on earth would they catch a bird?

bird sees bugs near opening of a termite mound........ball python sits near opening of the same termite mound......bird gets too close to the opening.......bye bye birdie.

I've watched Kisasa stalk her rat....she sneaks up on it sooo slowly, barely moving at all but always getting a little closer...and gathering her body up behind her to give her more strike range. And then WHAM....she's got that rat in her jaws and wrapped faster than I can see it happen. I can very easily visualize a BP stalking and catching a bird that is pecking at seeds or bugs on the ground.

Actually, in west africa, young male ball pythons have been found in trees. The theory is that there is safety in the trees and less competition for food.

Yeah I suppose so. I always think of arboreal snakes as the ones getting a real chance at a bird. I didn't think BPs would even be interested in eating a bird, I thought just mammals, but you learn something new every day!

Makes sense.......and I can see them spending more time on the ground as they get larger. Can I see some of my smaller bps climbing, yes.........some of those big girls, lol, clumsy as they can be.....

Do you have any internet resources for behavior of bps in the wild?
