    Rack System Help
I'm attempting to save up some money to buy these kids a rack system, however, the prices are just so ****** expensive. I've looked at a few older threads, but I'm curious as to what the people now have to say/suggest.

Ophelia is Touching 4' and Ody's in around 2'. Right now I've got Ophelia in a 40 gallon breeder and Ody in a ten gallon starter. (I had to the ten gallon so I didn't waste money and Justin bought the 40. Woot.)

I'm concerned with getting a rack system that might be too small, that they won't feel comfortable in, etc. Then again, I've got a blanket over Ophelia's tank to keep the humidity in so...blah. HELP!

the 41 quart? low profile boxes should be good for adults. They make 3 slot racks for those.

I'm biased to AP cause thats what I've used, but I feel like they offer great value and quality for what they cost. AP also makes Melamine racks, which are cheaper than the PVC racks, but not as durable.

Remember, you'll need a thermostat to control the heat on a rack system, so go ahead and figure in another $60 for an on/off tstat or another $120 for a proportional tstat.

Hey Brad, do you have pictures of the Melamine racks? The one I found is $150 with the belly heat and six shelves which sounds about right.
Six shelves is more than enough and that'll force me to fill them. ^_^

I'm just trying to be a little cautious with my purchases. Justin spent eighty on the 40 gallon which is proving to be a ripoff. Meh. I've already got the thermometers and now I just need to purchase the thermostat. Can I use one thermostat for the entire unit?

And Brad, you know I'm going to take advantage of you everytime we go to Noah's. It's so nice to have someone close by when I'm freaking out. O_O

Uh oh Vaughn. Since I would guess that you aren't downsizing the collection, you must be getting a new type of rack...Something breederish?

So if we drink more does that mean you may inadvertently blow more cash on racks? Anyway, Adam is buying all the drinks so no financial strain there :) :)

    Me too!

Think about it this way - it's an investment that's going to last a long time.

I try to keep costs hush hush with Karl. He was standing by the rack and said "so, how much are you paying for this?" When I told him he went :O ! LOL

Not much he could say, we don't have community money, and any of our money left over after bills is our own to spend how we want! LOL

I haven't told him how much my hets are - no need for him to know. Seems he'd make the connection how much a pastel male would be when I told him how much they go for - but he was thinking what "we" could sell them for, not what "I'd" have to pay for one! Far be it from me to spell it out for him! LOL

robin, you'll have a good setup. after "we" pay the bills, i pay for extra stuff and then whatever is left, i get to spend. not too bad though, my wife(charmaine) is real cool about the snakes and likes them. having 3 kids is an expensive habit too! lol
when you start to add up all the costs, it is more than you think. you have to look long term and think realistic. it is certainly a cool hobby, that can make a return.

Denial is a blissfull place to be!

After this summer - I'll hopefully have my starting collection complete (get the boys home and three more girls) - so extra checks going forward will be towards at least one more rack like the one I picked up this weekend, a shoebox rack from Rich when I start breeding, and an incubator (I'm eyeing the Nature's Spirit one).

Please let me know, Vaughn. Give me a call if you'd be willing to sell me a rack. I believe you've got the sizes of my kids.

    Ophelia: 1096 grams; ~4'
    Ody: 339 grams; ~2'

I've been checking out a few racks and so I'm sort of debating which one would work best. I'd LIKE to not spend more than $400 on the entire setup. I'll be purchasing a Helix Thermostat ASAP.

These are the ones I've narrowed it down to.

What is your goal for the rack? These are not big enough for adult BPs. You might want to think about getting something that will last you through adulthood of your snakes. You might be better off looking at a Boaphile Ballroom rack or an AP Iris 900.

    5-Slot Adult Rack
    $275

This is an amazing all-purpose rack that holds anything from adult sand boas, to colubrids, to ball pythons. The rack itself is 17" W x 24" D x 36" H. The unit holds 5 Sterilite boxes that are 32-quart units and measure 16.5" W x 23.5" D x 6" H. It is heated with a single 11" piece of FlexWatt heat tape. We use a variation of this same rack (just taller) for our adult Kenyans, Rosy Boas, and Ball Pythons (see 10-slot adult rack below).

The width and height of those tubs are fine. I personally wouldnt keep an adult BP in any less than the CB-70's (33" length I believe). Just my opinion and I'm sure others might disagree.

I looked at Jason's Jungles too, and I liked his racks a lot - the ONLY thing that turned me off to them - back heat as opposed to belly heat.

Who is it that makes the three high racks, that might be something you're interested in too (just depends on how many you plan to add).

what about the AP Sterilite 1860/1960 series rack? The 3 tall is only $180 but then you need the tubs (a little over $6 at walmart) and a t-stat.

That would work too. And the Sterilite tubs are cheaper and easier to come by than the Iris tubs.
