can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
well, suddenly last week there has been an increase in mouse prices "dont know why!!!" however. the price went from 2 bucks to like .....
ummm 9 bucks!! .. even 10 .. only 3 places that sell mice over here
i was wondering if i can feed it drawf hammies .. they r the same price now. but i think the drawf hamster is alittle bit larger than the mouse
since i have to pay for two mice "small ones" there are no big ones .

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
i would think you can and have seen it done from someone else on this website but remember, if your bp likes it too much, it may never go back to anything else.

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
The only thing to consider is that your BP may decide he ONLY wants hamsters, and will not want to take a mouse or rat again. If you decide to feed hamsters, make sure you have a reliable long-term supply.
$9 is ridiculous.. you could always get a few rats and breed them yourself.

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
If you feed hamsters once....be prepared to feed them every time. If your ball python eats mice now, why change and risk it not eating?

i agree. if they are both about the same price, why take the risk? if mice happen to go down again and the hamsters stay up, you could hve to pay more than you want if your bp decides not to take mice/rats again.

This is how I see it. 9.00 to pay for a meal a week is worth it. Yeah, paying 2.00 then 9.00 is insane but, its only a once a week, or 10-14 day meal. So it could be worse. Haha I always say its cheaper then feeding myself, or a kid! :D I'd stick with the mice.

Where do you live? At $9 a mouse what are rats $20? If you do decide to feed hampsters be prepared to feed them to your snake from now on.

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
lol, im sure i dont want to feed it hammies everytime.
now i guess i have to convience my wife to breed mice at home..
she'll kill me :)
i think my snake is big enough to eat 2 mice so that will be like 20 bucks :P
i think i'll stick with mice too :)
thanks for the advice.
btw, its not rats, its small lap mouse , the white ones.
but i guess once a week isn't that bad.. i was just thinking about the hammies
i did feed it a small chick once like a month ago.
anyways :) i dont plan to feed it anything other than mice.
thanx

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
For $9 a piece those mice better be poopin' out gold turds!!! I only pay $1 a mouse at the place i go to, and have NEVER seen them for sale at more than$2.99.....and I think that price is ridiculous!!!!

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
I would get your BP on FT as soon as you can and then order some micesicles off the net. Three weeks of regular feeding would equal the amount to get about 50 mice shipped from rodentpro.
-
Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
if it is eating two mice, why not breed rats and get him on rats? Rats arent as nasty as mice, and grow larger as your BP gets larger :)

Do you live in California? I recall a recent article that they passed some new laws on pet stores, including requiring a certain amount of cage space per mouse. That could explain the higher prices. Unfortunately, I don't remember where exactly the article was, or if it was even on this site. If anywhere, it was in General Herp.

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
That was a proposal, and it hasn't passed yet.

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
I think if that passes about having to ween mice for 3-4 weeks after birth or whatever it was, youll see LOTS of people breeding their own mice and rats.

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
sorry for the late reply.
well, i live in the middle east. kuwait to be precise.
we kinda have the same market as chatuchak , incase u guys are wondering about it
http://www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com/b...kok/chatuchak/
its even worse . well, they only have small mice. rats are no where to be found.
and about ordering FT from the net is not an option . ordering pets is prohibited by laws in kuwait "not without a permit" , it wouldnt' eat a pre-killed anyways i already tried that.
well, thats the thing. i do have money for the mouse, but like i said. 10 bucks for a mouse is very stupid. anyways. its too risky to feed it hamsters. i dont want it to be used to hamsters. there's a big chance that im gonna breed them at home. is it ok to put them outside the house? because of the smell?

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
Johar, I would definitely consider breeding food yourself considering the unstable supply and those ridiculous prices for a simple little white mouse. Check around on the Feeder forum here for some ideas about how to properly keep mice (especially posts from Daniel as he's very successful at it). There should be an old thread from me asking a lot of questions back when I tried to breed mice. They do smell a lot more than rats but if you're weather is appropriate over there I don't see any issue with them being outside. Just make sure they are very securely caged (mice chew bigtime) and that no predators like cats, etc. can get to them. If it's comfortable enough for a cat outside as far as heat and humidity then I think mice would do well. If it's very humid there make sure the mouse caging is very well ventilated and they always have shade and lots of water. Make sure that they are out of the weather so that when it rains they don't get soaking wet smelly bedding. To cut down on the smell change the bedding in their cage often, don't overcrowd them and put a few drops of vanilla extract in their drinking water. It is mostly the males that stink worse than the females, so keep only one of those for breeding and feed off the rest as fast as they are big enough.
Male mice will rebreed the female mice right after they deliver babies so if you don't want more mice than you can handle just make sure you have a place to put the male safely away from the nursing female so you can pace the litters to the frequency you want.
Perhaps Daniel could advise you on how many mice you should start with since you are only feeding one BP. You may only need a pair so that shouldn't present a huge problem for your wife as long as they are kept out of your general living area (they do stink so I can understand her concern). Also if you put them in good caging they won't get loose and cause problems. If you wife is anything like most of us wives, she'll appreciate the big costs savings LOL.

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
lol, thank you for your post franky. i came to my wife today after work.
i was like " honey! im gonna tell u something. dont be a kid and get mad, ok?"
..... then i was like "im gonna breed mice in the balconey!!"
Wife: "no!!"
ME : "bu.."
Wife: NO!!!
ME : BUT I...Uhh!!
Wife: IT WAS HARD ENOUGH FOR ME TO ACCEPT THE SNAKE!!! NOW U WANT TO RAISE MICE TOO!!!!!!
lol, u can see where that going.
i treid to explain that im gonna breed them in the balcony, well, the weather is hot in the summer...so i'll feel bad for the mice it can reach 45C if not 50 in the shade sometimes. ok, i could take care of them everyday. but like you said i'll look through the posts. heheh she wants me to pay 20 bucks each week instead of bothering myself with breeding them.
i'll settle down and try again probably next month. maybe i should buy her a present and asl later.. lol, to be honest with you, my mom would kill both the mice and the snake!! "shrugs" actually my wife would too, except she's afraid that i might bring a copra/spiders/scorpions for revenge!! :D

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
Jewelry for your wife maybe? :wuv:
Sorry to hear the price of mice is skyrocketing...that's so stupid and frustrating. Have you considered breeding rats instead? They definitely are less smelly and everyone says they are easier to manage. Can you buy live rats locally?
-
Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
i would if i find a pair!! ;/ maybe i should catch two rats from the streets!! :P
lol, im kidding.
-
Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
well my female only eat hamster or gerbill, and I traid rats, and mice againd and she dont even care.
-
Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
Johar do alot of people have snake's in your country? Or do they sell the mice as pet's
-
Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
That really stinks about the price of mice there. However, if your wife is willing to spend $20 a week to feed the snake, I would take her up on it in the name of marital harmony. Maybe after a month or so of that, she will see the wisdom of breeding a few of your own, and then you won't be in trouble for it. ;)

Re: can i feed my bp drawf hamsters?
emilio :) well, nope, not alot of people have snakes. however the ones who do have snakes, i remember a friend of mine had 2 ball pythons!! u didnt know what to do with them, he was feeding them eggs! the poor things were eating eggs!!!...
well, after he saw how much i care for my snake and how much i know about it. he felt sorry for them, they died ..
anyways. the mice are being used for falcon hunting/feeding :)
