Could use some prayers

Today I called my 97 year old grandmother after my Weight Watcher's meeting as I do each week to report my progress.

I could barely understand her, she was slurring her words so badly, and I kept hearing the nursing assistants saying "Ms. Felt - are you ok???" and then taking the phone from her and telling me they'd call me back.

I called my parents immediately (they're in NC - I'm in GA) and told them that they needed to call the home and see what's going on. My dad said - she's been slurring her words all week - they have her on some pain medication because she fell earlier this week.

Well, my mom went over there and said that they think that she was having a mini-stroke during my call to her. I just sensed something was not right.

This woman has a SHARP mind - her body just isn't cooperating. My mom spent the rest of the day with her and said that she's aware that she's not making sense and it's very sad (this is her mother). We almost lost her two years ago - I was called to come home if I wanted to tell her goodbye - but she pulled through and has moved from being in a wheelchair to walking again with a walker.

I would appreciate it if you would say a prayer for her to your higher power! Thank you!

i definitely will pray for your grandmother as hard as i can!! i think it is quite amazing and awesome that she is 97 years old. she must have had really good health!!:grandma:

Aww Robin you, your grannie and your whole family are in our thoughts and prayers tonight and always. Believe in the best hon, prepare for the worst and bless every day of those 97 years....that's a long gift of life, love and wisdom that I pray will continue for some more good years. If you need to talk you know the numbers and you know you can call day or night my friend (and forget the perfect southen manners, you call and don't worry about being a "bother" or "disturbing us" I can read your mind about that) :grouphug:

I'm glad to be of whatever help I can be Robin. When I went through this with my own grandmother many years ago, she was misdiagnosed as suffering a stroke when she had in fact developed a subdural hematoma/hemorrhage. Just like your grandmother she had fallen from her bed late one night and we believe now had struck her head on the bedside table. She was ill (subsequently diagnosed with pneumonia) and the systoms of the brain bleed were blamed on the fall, the pneumonia and her advanced age.

Thanks goodness the appropriate tests (which we had to fight to get done) revealed the truth of it and after surgery/treatment she was able to live many more years with her facilties intact. Not saying this is the way of it with your granny hon, but considering the similarities here (fall followed at a later date by stroke-like symptoms in an older lady)....well I figure it's no harm to ask her doctor to do the appropriate tests and make sure it's not a slow brain bleed in the underside of the dura mater.

This article explains it well and it's best to educate yourself Robin. I know with my granny the Doctor at first refused to do the CT scan and we literally had to threaten to remove her AMA (against medical advice) and take her elsewhere for treatment. Unfortunately with elderly patients doctors often take the easy route and blame strokes when it is sometimes other medical issues, drug interactions, etc. The neurosurgeon that saved her life was amazed when I showed him all the stuff I printed offline LOL

You have my prayers and I hope she will pull through. My great grand mother died last year and she was 110 yrs old.

Thank you everyone! My grandmother was admitted to the hospital today - we're not sure what's going on. A CAT scan was done, and there's nothing that they can see, and they don't think she's had a stroke - their puzzled why she is slurring her words and not making sense.

Hopefully they will come up with something soon Robin. I know your family must be very worried without a firm diagnosis. Sometimes they need to redo tests after a bit of time to get a more clear result or just keep on them to keep looking. Could it be a drug reaction to the pain meds? Again, my granny's incident required she be on codiene in her IV for pain managment. She acted like she'd lost her mind Robin! We thought the brain bleed had left her permanently brain damaged - heck the doctors thought that too. Turned out, thank God, to be a strong reaction to the codiene...as soon as they changed her meds....she cleared right back up and was able to communicate and make sense again. I think especially with the older folks that drugs can do very wierd and unexpected things.
