Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
I like him I think he's cool but they went over board with the retic.Looked a little stressful for the big snake.

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
he does know alot, but i just dont like him, he jumps around and yells and screams and makes a big deal out of nothing alot of the time, i really stopped watching him when i heard him give some really really bad information about something, i honestly forget what he said but oh well........
all of them on the video seem to be running around and jumping and screaming to make it look like its such a struggle with that big boy. I dont deny the stregth of that snake or anything but they just look like a bunch of dummies doing that.....poor snake :(
if the snake really wanted to get away that bad they would all be on there butts by then, plus when they just let him go on the stage he was fine , no struggle or anything:rolleyes:

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
LOL....that was a pretty funny video. Personally, I think it was all a put-on, although it's probably that Conan wasn't "in the loop" about how ol' Steve-o was gonna demonstrate his snake.
There's some things I like about Steve Irwin...such as his passion for animals and conservation...but there's lots about him that really irks me. Since I don't know him personally, I can't say for sure, but he comes across to me as having an ego even bigger than that snake, and too much of his "reality" shows are staged for ratings.

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
I think it's great he loves animals. However, its a huge snake, its being treated like a rag doll, and if it bit someone, I'd totally understand why!

Exactly, what do you think would happen if the snake bit Conan or anyone for that matter? The snake would be blamed for being a dangerous evil creature and that's what they got for handling it!! What would you expect?
Very few people would've pointed out that they were throwing that snake around like a rag doll!

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
My guess is the snake was freaking out because sound stages are freaky places to be. Freezing cold air conditioning, sizzling hot lights, loud vibrations from speakers and the audience...shoot, I'd struggle to get out of there too!

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
I couldn't actually watch all of it. For a man who supposedly loves reptiles and respects them, he sure as hell doesn't show it. He did treat her like a ragdoll, and I'm really disgusted with his nonchalant behavior. That entire situation was probably a real stressor for her and if I'd been her, I'd have bitten him.

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
he just makes me :tricho:
and i woulda bit them to lol!
**
and another thing that makes me angry about him is anytime he is doing anything with a constrictor snake he claims its trying to constrict him as hes holding it.....wish i could find a clip with an example but i think you know what i mean....he will hold it and the snake will start to crawl around amd might loop around his arm or something that is obvisouly harmless and hes like -->" aye matey look at this buté, shes a constrictor snake and she kills er prey by constricting it, just like shes trying to do to meself now*
like um... hello!!??!!, if she wanted to eat you she would have got yea by now;)

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
Here's what needs to be reminded. A snake, all though most can be tamed, they are a wild animal. They need to be respected and treated with respect and given the best care you can give them. Snakes can't talk, so if its in a bad mood, it can't say "please, not today". And yes, if it bit Conan, the snake, although beatiful to us, but scary to others, (like my family haha) would say kill the snake. Or, SEE! The snake attacked poor defenseless Conan even though he was running around like a chicken with its head cut off!

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
I don't like watching him at all; he KNOWS he's making the animals angry, and yet he doesn't seem to try and calm them down...his goal is to get it to attack, from what I've seen...and to be honest, it looked like the people holding the snake were moving a LOT more than the snake was.

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
Well, that was a pretty weird video and it probably was a put on considering it's Conan, but I certainly don't think Steve is as evil as you guys are making him out to be. If you've ever seen him through a whole interview, he's actually a pretty quiet polite guy - he just gets overexcited when talking herps. He goes nuts because he's passionate about it. I do believe he loves his animals, but I also think he gets carried away when wanting to show them off.

i would have to totally agree with this.

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
not to mention he makes multiple millions of dollars a year and donates nearly all of his money - and his time - to conservation and directing one the more successful zoos in the world. the guy acts pretty annoying on his show but he really is just trying to generate interest in things we all love here.
my opinion = entertainment is entertainment. when he says a snake's "constricting" his arm, he clearly doesn't mean in a literal sense... he's just trying to paint a picture of what the snake is doing since we can't be there to experience it first hand. it's the nature of animal shows these days... family friendly entertainment. heck, i don't even remember the last time i saw a newer animal program showing a kill in full view with blood and all.

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
We've really enjoyed shows and the dvd done by Austin Stevens. He's still pretty nutty, but not *as* nutty as the Croc Hunter (South Africans being a bit more reserved maybe?).
Anyway, there are several video clips of him on Animal Planet and we bought his DVD from Amazon. =)

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
Finally a voice of reason :)
Nothing at all wrong w/ the Croc Hunter. I would guess he knows way more about the animals he deals with then just about anyone on here.
I have never heard a bad report on him or how he treats his animals.
As I always say " some on here need to lighten up a tad "
It's all good :)

hiya did u know that steve Irwin is a huge supporter in stopping people keeping herps as pets? he says we are all not qualified enough and it should be left to folk like him and other zoo's!

He does? I'm suprised. I would have thought he would be all for people keeping captive bred snakes as pets, it encourages captive breeding, assists in producing more captive bred endangered snakes that can be returned to the wild, and, as I always hope, maybe, if enought people see us with our snakes, maybe we can get rid of some of the fear and negativity, and encourage other people to be more concerned about wild snake populations. That seems short sighted for someone who claims to be as interested in conservation as he is.

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
Steve's daughter has a pet corn, I kinda doubt that he's really an advocate against pet herps. I've also seen his wife doing dishes with a pet boa wrapped around her just chillin. I'd be really surprised.

the thing is they "know" what they are doing we do not u see thats the difference! I will find the article I have it somewhere!

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
i remember a show where he was working with a amethystine python that wasn't shedding right. they took it in as a rescue, and even then he didn't mention anything about not keeping herps... he just said it's sad when people don't know what they're getting into and reitterated the importantance of knowing the species you're dealing with.
who knows though... with anything you say on tv or in any media, there's a good chance it will be misreprested and scued to fit the agenda of whoever is reporting it. manipulation is the media's best tool.

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
No comment on any specific person but personally I'd rather watch Discovery or National Geographic shows about snakes than anything Animal Planet puts out. They just seem to hype so much...amp it up and dumb it down a bit, so for me anyways, it's a lot more entertainment when what I want is information and to come away from the show actually having learned something about the species of snake.
Animal Planet is a good, don't get me wrong...just sometimes they seem to treat the creatures more like sideshow freaks than just another part of the natural world.

I don't know, I think it depends more on the show than the network. I was watching a show last night on Discovery about snakes, and it was full of misinformation. They would cover individual species like Rattlesnakes, and would show a picture of a Ball Python. They did the same thing when they were talking about Retics and they showed an Anaconda, then they went on to say how Retics can get "up to 16 or 17 feet" and how many large pet pythons kill their owners every year.
I know what you mean about Animal Planet, though. They whole "Extreme" series has a little too much hype and not enough meat.

Re: Croc Hunter& Conan Obrien & 20ft Retic
For starters the video was a "show" the handlers were the ones doing all of the movement. and the flailing around. Except for when the snake went under the couch, I think the rest was planned. Not once did the snake snap, or attempt to strike anyone or anything. Even at the end of the video when 1 man was holding the retic by himself, the snake seemed to be as calm as possible considering his enviornment.
As far as Irwin. He is now a "cartoon" of what he once was. The networks made him into this personality. He has an extreme love and dedication to animals, especially herps. Just think of how unknowledgeable people would be having not seen his show, or specials on Animal Planet? I am not condoning some of the outlandish behavior, but just think of how many people stopped on his channel to see what he was doing, and actually learned something (as dumb-down as we might believe it to be). He has probablly done more for the education and basic awareness of the animals, especially snakes, than anyone else. You might not respect the behavior of the man, but you must respect what he has done for the herp community.
