    Snake is blind for now
My snake is now blind.I went down to check on him and I could see his eyes were completly hazed.I could not see his pupil.Of course he is in the shedding process so I'm not completly worried. He also will not leave his hide,is shy,and very defenceive now.BTW he did not act like this earlier, and his eyes were alot clearer.

Your snake is not blind. There is a big difference between blindness and shedding. While in shed, it's normal for them to be more defensive. They are more vunerable, since they're eyesight is worse than usual.

As far as I know they are blind as soon as there eyes change color.Temporary blindness is part of the shedding.

And you heard this from where?

I know while mine are in shed, they can still see me. They react to motion, so therefore are NOT blind. :wuv:

React to motion because they feel vibrations that we cannot. They act defencesive because they can't see during sheding.

When in shed and eyes are blue they are pretty close to no sight.
Your bp see's you thru heat and vibration.
Heck even when there eyes are clear they have very poor eyesight.

" How can they feel vibrations thru air" ????? Ummm they feel it thru ground.
My bp knows it when I walk in the room from the slight vibrations he feels from my feet on the carpet.

I do hope most don't think they hunt and react from what they "see"
Their best sight is thru their tongue

    Sheesh guys!! :neener:

Here's a link to a scientific article, that say's "The snake will have reduced vision and may be more defensive than normal."

    Hehehheheh....
Kinda what I said "pretty close to no sight" = reduced vision.

Thanks for the link to the study :partyon:

It just took me a bit to pull up the article. It's a very cool article. My brain was actually working tonight. ;) (I almost suggest wrestling in some medium but figured I'd try and restrain myself :giggle: )

Hmm... reduced vision from already bad vision. I would classify that as blind, at least if it happened to me I'd be shopping for a white cane. :P With those opaque eyes, I'm sure they can see shadows moving around, but I doubt if they can make things out with any clarity.

That is exactly what I said.

Blind means NO eyesight. I guess we can classify them as visually impaired, and possibly 'legally blind', if we can ever get them to take that eye test. :neener:

I think we are talking semantics here. :confuzd: If anyone has a link to any information on ball python eyesight, I would love to read it. I couldn't find anything of a scientific nature.

(how about a thumb war?) :carouse:

Edit: My whole intention for responding to this thread was to prevent newbies from reading it, and assuming their bp was actually completely blind.

Yes, Glad you did that because the next question would be where could they get a white cane and a seeing eye lizard :)

Re: Snake is blind for now
i doubt the vision is all that much worse.

example: colored/designer contacts (or even sunglasses and goggles).

since it's just the ultra thin covering on the outside of their eye, and not the eye itself, i imagine it's pretty much like when people where those opaque designer contacts... they don't affect vision at all.
