Best hides for a ball python?
I have about a 1 year old ball python and I want to get a nicer hide for him, something that actually looks good in the cage too, not just an upside down planter pot which I am currently using now. What is the best type of hide for him? also is there something that makes the hide humid inside because I have a hard time keeping up my humidity levels in his cage, thanks

Re: Best hides for a ball python?
If you want something nice looking, Exo-Terra makes these reptile caves that are pretty snug. I just don't like them because they are too bulky and heavy for my setup. They are also kind of expensive, so yeah.
Here's a link to those hides:
http://www.reptiledirect.com/index.a...ROD&ProdID=385
the small size works for a hatchling, large for a juvi, and XL for an adult.

Re: Best hides for a ball python?
This is what we use, as you can see in Cleo's cage here. It's the medium size, so we plan to purchase one of ESU's larger sizes when Cleo outgrows it.
If we had lots and lots of snakes to care for, I would go with something less expensive and the easiest possible to clean, but the resin molded stuff from ESU is very easy to clean and disinfect while being more aesthically pleasing for me. Snakes like'em, I like'em. =)
Have a look at the "Captain Overkill's Guide" my fiance Rick wrote for setting up a glass viv that maintains proper husbandry.

Re: Best hides for a ball python?
Haha, Captain Overkill.......certainly is overkill, but we've been there, done that discussion!

Granola bar box was the best thing for my snake. He loves it and practically lives in it :P

They all seem to like 'em Bill.
Especially since they come in sizes.
It allows for a nice tight fit.

I have used alot of cardboard hides in the past, but they just don't clean up well. I am tired of throwing them away and getting another. I have been looking for something I can throw in the old dishwasher I plumbed in the basement. ;)

Do the large ones fit nicely in the 41 qt tubs?

You're concerned about height?
-
Re: Best hides for a ball python?
Just overall size, does it fit with room left over? Is it tight to the top? Etc
-
Re: Best hides for a ball python?
Height is not a problem.
Two in the 41 quart is tight - but there is still room to move around and my girls just move 'em as they need to.

Re: Best hides for a ball python?
Before spending the money on those ESU type hides, I would pick up some cat litter pans from Walmart for $2.50 each....they make great hides for adults. They fit great in 41 qt tubs too.
For my smaller bps, I use random sized plastic containers(i.e. butter tubs, cool whip tubs, etc.). ha ha....i have everyone saving their butter tubs for me ;)
Like Bill said.....cardboard just does not clean well...and having to replace a ball python's hide everytime it gets soiled places alot of unneeded stress on the animal..

With all the cat litter pans I have gotten lately for mice racks, I'm surprised I didnt think of that. Thanks!!
Cleaning the cage finding soiled cardboard and having to replace it, not only stresses the snake, it stresses me too!! LOL!!

Re: Best hides for a ball python?
I got some plastic tubs(butter size) at walmart after christmas for about .05$ each. They have xmas themes on the outside but so far the snakes don't seem to care about that. Making a entrance took about a minute eacha nd I have a nice stack of them, cheap plastice bowls work well too, If you don't have people to save tubs for you, which I am about to contact my friends and go, hey.... save me your tubs!!
I would like ot find something for my larger snakes, my big guy is in a LARGE tank with a cardboard box.
My rats and mice get to squabble over who gets which boxes. I use those because they don't seem to care if I toss em.
Mice like the butter tub size things too, as do rat pups just weaned.
I like those from Adam's post with the hole in the top, but I am afraid that my guys in the racks wouldn't be able to squeeze in.
Wolfy(Loving the links!)

My 3500+ gram girls housed in CB-70 tubs have no problems getting in and out of those hides. ;)

It's really not all that big of a deal ... I've seen adult ball pythons compress themselves enough to crawl under a door. They are extremely adept at getting into and out of tight spaces. :D

No problem Robin.
Glad they worked out.
I searched around and that is the best price I was able to find.
If you come across a better price - let me know!
I'll be building another rack soon in anticipation of some spring arrivals.:snake2:

Re: Best hides for a ball python?
I love the heavy black rubber dog dishes I buy from our local feed store, however, those freedom breeder ones are amazing looking Adam! I assume the bowl shaped depression in the medium one if for water right? Though we are going to your idea of disposable cups in pvc holders as it seems smarter once we have a larger number of water dishes to mess with. I do like the look of the freedom breeder hides though...very nice!

I liked the Freedom Breeder as well, but when I clicked into the main Freedom Breeder site to see other sizes, I can't find their hides listed anywhere, except fo the direct link that Adam provided. Am I clueless? :confuzd:

I've been looking too and I believe you are correct - that's also the best price I've seen as well. I've bookmarked the link you provided. I honestly didn't think that large one would be big enough for Sarah, but she's even got some growing room. They really can fit in some small spaces!

Here.
They are towards the bottom. ;)

Re: Best hides for a ball python?
Thank you Bill! Yup, I was clueless! Duh!

Re: Best hides for a ball python?
Each of my snakes has a heavy Exotera hide of the appropriate size and one of the reptile tub types. The lighter reptile-tubs tend to get bulldozed around the enclosure like a little snake double-wide trailer-home but they all seem to be pretty OK with the whole situation.
If there's ever a tornado I expect them each to slither toward the heavy hide.

Re: Best hides for a ball python?
:worship: Thanks adam. I've been wondering if I could buy those hides you linked to from freedom breeder online somewhere.
My irian jaya carpet pythons seem to love them. (Of course the balls love them).

Thanks Daniel, I picked up 4 of them today!! I used my soldering iron to melt the holes in the bottoms and the adult bp's love them!! I must be getting a good deal at my Walmart, they were only $1.99/each. :) Looks like I am gonna have to get a few more!!
