How do I move a sling?
Ok my GBB sling is ready for a bigger vial.. how to I get the bugger in there? Between being fast, skittish, venomous and fragile.. I don't know what to do!

I always put my tiny vials in a bigger shaker then waited for them to make thier way out of it before retreiving the original with foreceps. In the "vast wealth of knowledge" I gained from 4 slings hahahaha. I am still quite an arachn00b, actually but for the life of me I couldnt figure out any other way of doing it with things so small and fragile and fast.

LOL yep - that's when using that "russian dolls" technique gets tricky!

Plastic parmesan or red pepper shakers from a kicthen store were the best incremental housing steps I wound up stumbling across.

I take a 2 liter pop bottle, or a 20 oz pop bottle, and cut it so that I have a funnel shaped piece, with the bottle top being a part of the funnel and so that the bottle funnel has "side walls". if you can cup that over the end of the vial (with the bottle lid on, if the sling is small enough to run out), and then mainpulate the sling into the funnel end (titling the entire thing so that the sling can't fall back into the vial). (Beware, some slings may decide to run up the paintbrush, if you're using it through the lid hole to mainiupulate!) Screw the bottle lid on if you haven't already. Slide a stiff peice of cardboard between the funnel and the vial, so that the sling is now trapped in the funnel. Put funnel and cardboard over new vial, tilt, slide cardboard out, and prod sling into new vial with a paintbrush.

If that doesn't make enough sense, let me know and I'll try to get some pictures for you. I move almost all of my T's this way, including my nasty OW burrowers.

I've also put smaller vial lip to larger vial and gently proded the sling out with a paintbrush..but you may end up chasing the sling that way.

I have however, chased several T's around the bathroom with a deli cup and a paintbrush, due to speed, not staying in the new container etc... :P If you do transfers in the batheroom, be sure to seal up all the drain holes and the facuets! THe first method I described is pretty escape proof though.

My apologies, I didn't see your reply until today.

Instructional to follow. Unforunately, I'm not rehousing slings at this time, but snce I just sold my chaco to a friend, she has been volunteered for pictures.

Ok, this is all stuff I learned from an invert forum.

    Tools you will need:
    Your pop bottle "funnels"
    Clean small paintbrushes
    Stiff carboard
    Forceps

You also need the spider you are planning to move and it's new home.

These are your pop bottle funnels.

Here is my chaco, in her old home.

Settle the pop bottle over your tarantula carefully, making sure you're not crushing limbs. You will probably need the paintbrush to manipulate your spider in the direction you want it to go.

    http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...uppedChaco.jpg

Using a stiff piece of cardboard, slide it under your pop bottle, effecting trapping the spider.

Holding onto the pop bottle and the cardboard, your spider can be easily moved.

Place the spider into its new home, and remove cardboard.

You may have to unscrew the lid and use the paintbrush to keep your tarantula from walking up the sides of the bell, provided the spider cannot squeeze out of the top. Remove your pop bottle, settle the lid of the new home on, and you're done!

Re: How do I move a sling?
If you'd like to me to post shots the next time I move a sling, let me know.

Btw, that new container I moved my chaco into is a men's shoebox from The Container Store.

I throw in some peat moss, drill holes into the container, settle in a deli cup hide, and use a 2 oz food portion cup for a water dish. Easy and cheap set up.

A hide that isn't clear would probably be better, but my spiders don't seem to be bothered too much by the differece. The only spider I have that refuses to use it's deli cup hide made a burrow in the peat moss instead.

Re: How do I move a sling?
A sling is slang for a spiderling. Basically, any spider that's not an adult or hasn't reached roughly 3" or greater for "juvenile" size.

There's no definate named stages for sling or juvenile.
