Out of curiosity, for anyone who has large dark racks, do you normally provide 2 hides like would be normally recommended? Or does the rack act like a hide?

I do realize a hide is also about security, not just about darkness....

i've seen photos of a lot of breeders racks and havnt noticed 2 hides + water bowl in a lot of them and was just wondering.

I only use one hide in my rack. I only have one girl with feeding issues, and she got newpaper balled up until she settled in the rack. The entire rack is very dark with only the front getting any ambient light, so yes the entire rack does act like a hide.

I know some breeders don't even use any hides, but I still like the idea of them having their own quiet place. ;)

I use two hides in all my tubs, but as was mentioned, a lot of breeders use the rack or an opaque tub to serve as a hide. Either can be done... but I can tell you that they use the hides (both) in the tubs that I use... so they must like them. :) 15qt tubs with two hides and a water bowl makes it pretty cramped in there... but hey... small spaces.. happy balls! ;)

Pandora and Skye are in 15 quarts right now until the purchase of my rack. I have two hides and a water bowl in each of theirs. It is quite tight, but they spend the bulk of their time in the hides anyway, so they aren't missing the space at all! I DID have to find some smaller water bowls though! LOL

Back to the originial thread question, I use just one hide per tub in my rack for the adults.

Most of the time my adults never even use the hides, other than to bask on top of them. But they've got hides in case they want that extra closeness during a shedding period or whatever.

ive been wondering the same thing about having a hide for my BP's once i get the rack built. i know vanessa will need atleast one because she's only about 40" and its a CB-70 rack, but do you think zulu will? he's a big boy, over four feet long (just slightly over though) and hes around 1550 grams. im thinkin ill just give them both atleast one hide because i think it reduces stress for them, you know... havin a nice, quiet, dark place to go.

I would say give them as many as you can. Why take the risk if you cannot ascertain for a fact that they don't need one. Remember, they live in tight burrows in the wild. I'm pretty sure this behavior is carried on in domestic living conditions as well. This is my opinion based on what I have read and observed so far. Unless a really experienced breeder with many years experience under the belt who have made acute observations on the matter says otherwise, I'm stickin to this :D
