Breeding plan
What do you think of this, I was thinking to get a het pied male, and a couple of normal females, then breed them to the male, and eventually breed the female offsprings to the het male, I think inbreeding at this point is still safe, and with some luck maybe get some visuals. 2-3 year plan.
-
Re: Breeding plan
Sounds like a good plan....that is actually one of my many plans :D
Planning 2-3 years for a het male project does not seem too realistic of a timeline unless you have a some adult normal females. Do you have some adult females already or do you plan on picking up some?
-
Re: Breeding plan
Yeah, sounds like 2-3 is feasible if you have breedable age females and a male right now. Otherwise 4-6 is more likely.

Re: Breeding plan
good advice, get the girls first. i had a dozen or so girls growing up here, before i even bought a male snake. it also gives you time to find the right males for you. things tend to go smoother when you take your time and plan things out.

Man, I wish I had that many girls ready to go!

Re: Breeding plan
all of them didn't go this year, some were close. i held them off for next year. they will be 2000+ grams next season. more eggs!!!

Re: Breeding plan
Awesome!! Send some of them over here, will ya!? I need about 10 more. I noticed Top Shelf has adult female imports available for $99. Interesting..I doubt I would go that route but its always an option.
-
Re: Breeding plan
you couldn't give me an adult import girl! when it is all said and done i would rather spend the money and get cb girls that are strong feeders and problem free.
the girls i'm raising ain't leaving! lol there is too much time and feeders in them! lol. everything has a price though. j/k
back to imports, i think imports are good for new blood and some dinking projects. but for the average herper i think 99% of the time they are too much headache. you would need several years under your belt, alot of patience!!! a solid quarantine room, money for vet visits, and 2-3 yrs. time to get them properly acclimated. but on the flip side they are cheap and you could buy 10-20 of them and roll the dice. that ain't my thing though. i'm sure they are alot of people that buy import adults, breed the heck out of them and hope for the best and throw their losses in the freezer!
i think "what goes around comes around" nature has a way of dealing with things.

If you were to buy 20 of those, you might get one to breed this fall ... maybe. Then next year, you might get a second to breed ... maybe. Then over the next 5 years, you might convince another one.
My guess would be that you'd lose at least 4, maybe 5 from that 20.

Re: Breeding plan
I'll give you a crisp new $20 bill for a couple of those females! :)
I agree completely. I am not interested in the problems that imports could bring. I wish I had more females, but I can afford to take my time and grow up my babies. This coming season ill have at least 3 girls ready to go, the next year another 3 and who knows what I will pick up between now and then.

Yup. Its a crap shoot for sure. Its worth it for me to wait a couple extra years rather than deal with the headaches

sure i'll take a 20, about a hundred of them for each girl!
you can find some good deals at local pet stores, classifieds, some rescues.
adam has said it before, " there are no shortcuts" that is so true. to build a really nice breeder base takes time and $$$. unless you hit the lotto and can buy someone's adult colony it takes time.

Re: Breeding plan
Gotta work on that whole lotto deal. :)
In Florida you can always find someone selling or practically giving away adult females. Up here, nothing...

Re: Breeding plan
i haven't been around that long but i know that quality breeder girls are like gold! no way would someone give away "quality" solid breeder girls. you know what they say "if it sounds too good to be true"
what you need to do is find a pre-law college student that works at a good pet shop! now that's a hookup!

Re: Breeding plan
At the expo there was a booth loaded with over 0.50 BP's ranging from yearlings to sub-adults (priced just at $25.00). Folks were just buying these gals like they were going out of style. He did have a warning posted and after I read it I realized these are fresh imports. I (of course) was in NO possition to render some advice to these folks but I wished them luck getting those gals acclamated!!!

True, but there are also those that dont know the value of what they have

Re: Breeding plan
I have a related in-breeding question. In my crazy dream of breeding pieds by doing with a het pied couple, would it be better to get a het female from one breeder and the het male from a different breeder, in hopes of increasing the distance in the blood lines? Or is that foolishness because they're all coming from the same great-great-great granddaddy pied (Pete Kahl?)?
Is that sort of thing something breeders think about? Just curious. =)
-
Re: Breeding plan
i don't see any problems with that all. on the flip side it couldn't hurt to mix the bloodlines either. alot of bigger breeders will have multiple morphs from different bloodlines, so finding an unrelated pair should not be a problem. and you can always trade out male hets with someone else you TRUST.

Re: Breeding plan
I gotta figure out what to do with my male that is possible het for pied. He was a throw in on a deal for a female. Pieds are in my future for sure. They are AWESOME!

The world needs more pieds! Yes yes!
-
Re: Breeding plan
Many breeders offer unrelated het pairs if it's something that you're concerned about. Research, ask questions, and establish a relationship with the person that you are buying from and you will be on the right path for sure. ;)

I'm way more excited about producing Albinos at this point than pieds. But I want everything!!

Or a better hookup is someone with a big enough collection getting me feeders for less than my employee discount!

its true its true. In just the 3 weeks ive been looking around, i've picked up 2 giganto females locally in CT for $160, all ready to go. They just come from ordinary pet owners who don't know what they have. Pet classifieds rock! :headbang:
