    bathing your snakes
how many people actually bathe their snakes? i noticed one of the photos in the contest is in water and then someone in a thread mentioned taking them into the bathtub.

i didn't know they needed to go into the tub and bathe... do they?

(i'm talking about all kinds of snakes here not just balls)

All of mine get a soak at least once a week. Especially Slinky, my BCI, because every time I soak her, she poops. Much easier to clean up than in her cage. Both of my Tics have been in shed for the past week, so they've been getting 1 hour soaks twice a day. Some people never soak their snakes, and they do fine. I do it to help keep them hydrated, and keep an eye out for mites. But it isn't really a necessity.

Shedding is natures way of giving snakes a bath.

It depends on the size of the snake, some I put in a rubbermaid tub, some a kitty litter bucket. Whatever you use, make sure it has a secure lid with some air holes. Either way, don't make the water much higher than the snake's body. For example, Slinky is about 2 inches "tall" at her widest point, so I put in 2" of water. Peaches is only about 1" wide, so she only gets 1" of water. If its just the regular weekly soak, I'll leave them in for 1/2 hour, if they're in shed they get a full hour.

The only time I bathe the snakes is when they drag themselves through their own crap. For me its not worth taking the chance of them catching a draft and possibly developing a URI. My apartment (except for the snake room) has a lot of windows and can be drafty.

    Perfect!

Unless they have stuck shed and need to soak to get it off, they just don't need it.

When the albinos and pieds are really nasty from crawling through their own crap we wipe them down, but other than that, there is no reason to give them a "bath". With ball pythons, there is more potential for bathing to do harm than good.

I don't want to sound critical, but maybe you guys should spot clean more often.

And R.G. was also asking about snakes in general, not specifically BPs.

So when my snakes soil their cages at 1am and crawl through it while I'm sleeping I should set an alarm or something? Give me a break.

Being nocturnal, ball pythons typically deficate at night and then crawl through it.

If you didn't want to sound critical, how did you want to sound ... friendly?

Well, since I don't have experience with every single species of snake, I can only respond with regards to the species that I do have practical experience with. I'm not sure what the point of this statement was?

    Adam,

I dont know about you, but i sleep in the fetal position on the floor of my snake room so that the sounds of fresh crapping wakes me up. You can never be too cleanly!

every morning, every tub is clean. i clean daily any tub that is needed. and sometimes i have to wipe the snakes off. albinos just make it 100 times easier to see any mess on them. and for those of us that use paper we don't spot clean. it is a complete tub clean or nothing.

What she doesnt get is that it is easy when you have one or two snakes. I have 14 and will prob have many more by the end of the year. You have a bunch too and Adam has hundreds.

My snakes love the newspaper. I make sure they get the classifieds sections with the escort services. Maybe it gives them some ideas.

Okay, I thought of another instance where baths are necessary. The other week one of my big girls pretty much disembowled a rat. She ended up wrapped with a length of intestine. :puke: The odor was unbelievable. I let her digest for a day, then gave her a quick bath to get rid of the stench. Granted, that probably doesn't occur that often, but there are times when a bath is needed.

Are you using CB70s? If so, how much do you have to cut off? How long does a roll last? I might consider this stuff. I hate the mess of newsprint. Of course, I dont have any albinos yet...grr..

I recently switched to using the same thing. I get sick of newsprint ink on water bowls, hides and my snakes as well.

hey jamie, i'm using 41qt sterlites. about the same footprint as cb-70's. i also use 32qt. sterilites, and 6 qt for babies. for the babies i use paper towels. the 32 qts i cut off 21" of the 18" roll. for the 41 qts i cut 31 inches off the roll. then i fold and press it down in the tub so it covers the bottom and ramps up the sides a little.

My My Adam, I am shocked and appalled that you don't
    A. give everyone of your snakes a weekly bath
    B. that you don't have a 24 hr poop patrol to spot clean

What in heavens is this world coming to! :) :) :) :)

The snake and the rodent blow up w/ the innerds hanging off your snake was the problem I had w/ F/t and why I now feed live. God, does that stuff stink and then the little darlings do need a bath

Jamie dear it's ever so obvious you don't have lil human children LOL! After the birth of a few of the little ankle biters one completely disregards stains, smears, odd smells, odd looks and such like. One learns to stay downwind of dear friends (why should they suffer?) and put jewellery over the puke stain in one's very best mohair sweater that the darling rotten little infant just had to upchuck on (and yes I still haven't forgiven her and she's 18!!!)

Course I guess trying to tell my 12 year old and her friend that when the milksnake musked on them "it was considered good luck in some cultures" was pushing it a tad LOL. Hey my mother said that when my first baby peed all down my brand new wool dress jacket....I bought it!
