Amazon Tree Boa
Can anyone tell me about this snake.
A local pet shop said he would sell me one for $250 and he told me they go for $400. Am I geeting ripped off?

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
Very pretty snakes, the ones that I've seen and had experiences with were all pretty nasty buggers. However that's a pretty good rate for a ETB I've seen them go anywhere from $200-$500. Do a bit of research on them before you make the purchase, otherwise purchase some gloves along with him if you decide you cannot resist him/her.:P

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
that is actually a great deal! in most canadian stores that sell them they go for around $1000 CAN! I geuss it also depends if the snake is healthy, or if they're having problems feeding him,etc... but if none of that, it could be that he/she isn't considered a "pretty one". If it's none of that , it could be because he is unfreindly, they do have very large teeth and most dont like beaing handled. My uncle has an emerald tree boa that surprisingly likes to be handled and when you are done he doesn't like to go into his cage!
good luck, Lucas

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
An amazon tree boa isn't the same thing as an emerald tree boa.
Amazon Tree Boas usually go for about $150 or less in the states.
I'd say the deal is probably too good to be true....

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
It also might be a Amazon Basin BCC. I spent a lot of time with my buddy Jack last night while I was taking money at the card table. So my typing was a little off. It is supposed to be something like a RTB.

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
There is no tree boa that is like an RTB.
ATBs are usually nasty, albeit sometimes quite lovely, common snakes. You can get an atb for $100 pretty easy.. depends on the phase though.
Emmies (corallus caninus) or emerald tree boas range in price from about $300 on up.. $500-600 is not uncommon at all. These guys are green with white lightning bolts down the dorsal area. There are different phases with differing patterns.

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
I went to the shop today and he told my it is a Brazil Redtail Boa. He said they normally go for $400 but he would be selling it for $250. The low price is kind of making me iffy about this snake.

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
Hey Lars,
Can ya get a pic of it? I would be a bit iffy too, I mean, if it is a red tail, I have never seen one go for what he says they go for... unless it had some "special genetic" blend ;) But even then, I would still be iffy...... just b/c its in a pet shop. Does it look like the red tails you have seen pics of here? Or is it different? Can you find a pic elsewhere that resembles to show us? Another thing too, have you handled it? Have you seen it handled? I would be worried about its temperment.
Does it look like this:

Here is a great resource too:

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
He doesn't have it in yet, he said it's been ordered. He will probably have it in this week.

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
the store guy might be mixed up on the locale of the boa. i would definately get a pic, be a little cautious about some selling an animal they just got in! get the latin name of the boa. you can also contact kevin or charlotte at www.ectothermics.com great people and they specialize in locale boas and pythons.

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
Lars, see if you can get a pic of the snake. Secondly, where's this guy getting the snake, and why is he giving it to you at such a good price? I think he may have the locality wrong, but I've been mistaken before.

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
That's weird, I saw an "Amazon Tree Boa" just yesterday at a local pet store. It looked kinda like a RTB, but a lot dirtier (???). Nothing like the Tree Boas I'm used to seeing. I trust the guy's knowledge, but it caught me a little off guard. Nasty things too, very nippy. I think he had them for sale for 150 or so. They were grey with black splotches all over them. They had the tree boa head, but none of it's other desirable qualities. They even were coiled on limbs like the tree boa.

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
so... i'm curious as to what the outcome of this was?
amazon tree boas are very cool animals to add to a collection, but they are not pets. everyone i've known that keeps them says if you try handling them that they just get stressed instead of settling down. you can't miss an atb, they're big eyes and super thin prehensile tails are one of a kind.

Re: Amazon Tree Boa
Out come was he meant Northern Brazilian, or something like that. He said he would special order it for me. I didn't ask him too. I have one male RTB on the way right now and a possible female for $40 from a private order. I am up to seven snakes and after I get the two RTBs I will be done for a while. The two newest aquistions are in pretty rough shape so I am trying to get them back into good health.
