As requested, some updated pics of Neph. They are not as good as I had hoped - she didn't want to do much other than soak in her bin.

I keep f/t gazelles and dikdiks in the freezer. I used to let them graze in the back but the college girls in the dorm behind the house always snuck over and "liberated" them.

    ;) j/k

Neph is an integral part of our "retirement plan" for our larger breeder rats. She's a solid eater but growing much much slower than a retic/burm of the same age. Not that I am complaining in that regard!

To quote Rick after we saw our first "big boy" in person: "That's not a snakey-snakey...that's a SNAKEY-SNAKEY!" Neat pictures - thanks for sharing!

So.. would something bad happen to you if you stuck your hand in her tub and just grabbed her? Is she a hook girl? ;)

    Re: Neph
She's way too heavy for hooking so its hands all the way.
She lets you know if she wants you reaching for her or not! She has big loud lungs - the beefy bloods have nothing on her hiss. The hiss alone doesnt necessarily mean anything concrete, but when she cranks her head back at the same time . . . let's just say I'm not going to stress her more than I have to! Not to mountain a molehill - she's not the problem child you might think
I have that bin in her enclosure that acts like a hide - it's useful as one of the things that makes her nervous is the looming overtop and reaching in for her. That way I can just lift the whole bin out and into a temporary one while cleanign her cage etc.

    Re: Neph
2.5 yrs and somewhere betwixt 8-9'.

The snake measurer software does not work well with her - I can't get high enough to get her all in the shot and once I start going for the overhead (barstool) she starts haulin' ash outta there.

yeah.. I've been through that mess with my female suri. She's not that big, but she won't sit still! You need a nice clear lidded giant container.. or something.

    Re: Neph
How about a big piece of plexiglass that would fit over a bath tub? Put in her a clean, dry bathtub with a ruler, plexiglass on top and a quick picture - would that work?

    Re: Neph
Hehe. Yep - if I had a piece of plexi that big I'd pop it over the top of her bin.

To-the-inch measurement isn't a dealbreaker or anything - when she is out lounging with her body up against the peripheral of the cage I just note how long she is in relation to the tub's "ribs" and base measurement off that.

Last night was the first time she'd left the bathtub "clean" - but she'd left a massive "gift" in the bin already. She's got bigger p00 than any of the other creatures in the house (us included). Maybe not needing to go made her less inclined to swim out and lounge? No idea. I'll try to remember to keep the camera handy next time she's out to get seom better length pix - it's not a rarity to have her out or anything (unlike the camera having a charged battery when you need it lol).

So she likes to hang out in the tub, eh? Mine all try to leave if I put them in there.. though I haven't gave the condas a swim yet, I'm sure they'd enjoy ambushing me from the tub.

She loves it. Not to anthropomorphize too much - but she's just like a different snake altogether. Sometimes she'll just kind of sit with her head resting on the lip of the tub, doesnt get freaked by looming/reaching movements, swims some (tight) laps, blows bubbles (with her nose :P). And she usually wraps it up with a nice p00p. Up until last night actually it was very rare to find a pile in her enclosure - the tub action saw to that. That low-impact cleaning appeals to the lazy in me.
