Keeping Up Humidty
I have my bp in a 15 gallon critter cage(glass with screen lock top) and I am wondering for all of you that have a similar set up how you keep your humidity up?
I currently have a huge water bowl-that she likes to use as a hide (sleeps under it)
I have a humidity box
and I spray her tank twice a day.
Plus she gets a soak once per week for about 10 minutes in 85 degree water.
Any tips?

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
Sounds pretty good, but I would try taping up a bit of the screen top. That's seemed to work for me. Just make sure to leave some room so that fresh air can get in, but enough that the humidity doesn't get out. You may also want to buy a humidifier or make one (there's directions in the DIY here somewhere).

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
putting an extra water dish on the warm side helps too... as it evaporates faster!

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
You could buy or try and make a home made humidifier. Check for it in the do it your self section of the site.

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
I just got some thick clear vinyl from walmart and cut it to fit the top of the cage, and cut 3 3" holes in it for air, results still pending..

Worked pretty well - but I got to say the contac paper to seal all but three corners of the lid was so effective it marked the end of humidifier use. And pretty much convinced me to go tupperware in the end.

Thanks for all the POSITIVE replies all! :) Much appreciated!

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
I just use saran wrap. I tape it down over the screen during shed cycles and other times, I just dispose of it completely and mist the tanks lightly twice a day. Too much humidity will result in a soppy, wet substrate which can lead to belly rot!

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
I was reading this posting and I too am having trouble with humidity. I have an Animal Plastic cage but to keep the heat up high enough -- i must still use to low lamps -- if I do not then the ambient temp drops below 80. My humidity stays around 30 to 35 --- I have a water bowl and a small container on the hot side to help but it does not seem to change it. I mist the cage twice a day and it moves to about 40 but then drops back down. I have tried making a humid hide but she will not go in it and it dries out within an hour. It is terracotta that I soak. Suggestions -- more bowls of water or something???? I would love to not use the lamps -- I know that is the major issue but I worry about her temp too...

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
A call to SPhagnum P.I. ought to solve that mystery.
I have to use sphagnum moss with my bloods round this time of year to keep theur humidity at an acceptable level. Usually a small plastic pan/box of the stuff will do the trick.
Nice reminder though aas I am out and need to order another bale.

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
The clear vinyl is working perfectly, haven't misted since i put it on and its been 50-55% consistantly, was 25 and 30% before, even just a few hours after mist.

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
Excellent! It's a night and day thing!
One thing I did to make sure thee was a decent air exchange (stagnant air is badbadbad ) was make 2 openings in the vinyl/contac/saran/etc on the warm end (corners) and one on the cool end.

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
I put 3 evenly spaced air holes in the vinyl as well..

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
I have an Animal Plastics T3 cage and I have the same problem as another poster, I have flexwatt on one side of the cage but I have to use a 150 watt CHE on the other side to keep a basking spot of about 90 degrees and also to keep the ambient air temps in the 80's. Anyhow, my humidity levels are also very low in the 25-30% range, I mist the cage, it goes up to about 50-60% for like a half hour, then dries right back out. I CAN'T do without the CHE so that isn't an option. I have a room humidifier sitting infront of the cage that I run, but this really doesn't do much as the humid air from the humidifier has a hard time getting into the cage with the cages small air holes I am sure. So some quesitons..
1.) How can I get the humidity levels up without misting the cage? I am not home most of the day so manually spraying the cage with water is really hard to do.
2.) Will having a room humidifier sitting infront of the cage blowing on the cage make a cold draft inside the cage and give my snake a RI or something? I keep my ambient room temp at like 63-67 in the winter.
I was thinking of putting one of those waterfall things in the cage but not sure if that is a good idea to do with a snake or not...
I found this device, http://www.reptiledirect.com/index.a...ROD&ProdID=340 this looks like the homemade one on this site...
Thanks

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
I have an AP T11 and I have the under cage heat cable they sell on the hot side and I still need to lamps on each side to keep my temps just right.
I use a large clay pot bottom for water and put half over the heat cable and I use Reptibark which holds misting very well. I also place a large sponge very wet on top of each hide box.
I still mist in the am and pm but even when I go out of town for a few days the humidity never drops below about 40-45. I have elec heat and that is a humidity killer, I don't mist to much in the summer.
The thing w/ using the sponges ( which I have been doing for about a year and half now) is using new ones every month or so and cleaning good a few times a week when you change the water. I use Virosan on them and then just rinse good.
Before my AP I had Ozzy in a tank and I used the TropicAire and it worked great. I was thinking about adding it my AP but the sound of the air pump use to drive me crazy and my routine keeps the humidity levels at around 52-55 which is fine.

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
just build an humidifier using the do it yourself link on this site. I have a 60 gallon air pump one of these: http://www.tetra-fish.com/catalog/product.aspx?id=67 and I am using a 1-gallon round cranbury joice container. so far is seems to be working good, the thing is almost silent, I can hardly hear it, it's all placed BENEATH my cage on the floor. We will see how high the humidity gets throughout the night...

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
We did saran wrap, but with how the sliding lid closes, it was getting mangled immediately, so we went and had a sheet a plex custom cut to fit, heat emitter directly above water dish. Our humidity is now hovering at 60% without misting, but I'm guessing we'll need to mist when Cleo is in shed.

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
Hi -- I saw one person state they have a humidifier pointed at the cage. I am very new to this so take it as just a newbee who has heard warnings....I was told by a friend here in Colorado that she did that and her babe ended up with a RI -- so I guess just a note to be careful with the temp. She thinks it happened because the temp may have been a little low and then lots o' water....it is so dry here she never thought it could hurt. She has a glass cage with screen top so it may have just dumped too much...some of the humidifiers actually do not mist that well and that could have been her issue too. Just one of those things that a friend warned me of...but then I am paranoid too so hey.
I did get some of the moss this weekend - trying it -- I have two little containers - one on the hot side and one on the cool because it is a big cage -- the AP T3 also. So far only seeing it reach about 41 percent -- brought it up about 10. Really at a loss in this dry place...guess she may keep getting the humid showers. I put her in the shower and let it mist up (not water on her but her in there with the mist...good for me too) -- going to do that more while it is sooo dry!!!

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
I made that 'Do-it-yourself' humidier that is listed on this site and so far with it running for about 18 hours, my humidity has only gone up about 5-8%, is this normal? or should it make the humidity go up MUCH quicker? the little plastic tub that is sitting inside my AP T3 cage I can feel the moist air blowing out of it, but it blows up pretty lightly, like there is not much pressure coming out of it..

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
Make sure the aquarium pump is rated for the size tank you are adding humidity to. Also, since you are pumping fresh air into the enclosure, you can close up most of the top of the enclosure with glass, plexiglass, contact paper, etc. Depending on your heating element, this should get your humidity in the 50-60% range.

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
well I have an AP T3 cage and a 60 gallon rated air pump so I think the pump is rated good enough. Where is the best place to put the little hose that brings in the moist air into the cage? towards the top or bottom of the cage, right or left side, etc? right now I have the little hose just sticking through one of the air slots on the back left of corner of the cage (the left side of the cage has the 150 watt CHE over it, the right side has the flexwatt heat under the cage), the hose protrudes about 1/2" into the cage through the slot...
maybe I should place the hose differently?

Re: Keeping Up Humidty
It could be the CHE is drying the new moisture up almost as fast as it can enter into the cage. Have you tried placing the little tube on the right side of the tank?
