Sometimes, you don't even need to ask ...

    ;)

Just remember ... descriptions on the internet are nice to have from an education standpoint, but there are many scammers out there that know the descriptions too ... Lots have people have been suckered into buying animals that seemed to fit the pastel description but were actually just very nice normals ... know who you are buying from and in this business, you really do get what you pay for.

It's good to know I wasn't the only one who didn't know. I think the key is to be shown in person... internet pictures don't do it justice. I had to compare a normal to a pastel to really appreciate the difference.

My problem is that I am looking to buy one. Seeing the pics online is hard to tell if the color is really good on the snake or just a good photo? Is there anyone thing to look for? Anyone heard of Don Kaye Reptiles?

Good idea. It would be educational for me as well since I have pastels on the project plan. Since I took such a long leave of absence from herping I've made my mind up to go with the Graziani line for the first batch. Until I know who's who in the business anyway, better be safe than sorry.

Just because a pastel comes from a certain "line" doesn't mean the seller isn't shady ... Make sure you research anyone that you are thinking about sending money to and check references no matter what "line" they are selling.

Some dirt balls will actually lie about what pastel line they are selling because they know that some people are more drawn to certain "names" ... just something to keep in mind.

I agree 100%. That's why I am going straight to him for the purchase. You are so correct, sad as it may be, someone's out to make a quick buck at others expense. It's a tough world all the way around.

Haven't dealt with Don Kaye before, but the snake is from NERD why don't you just buy one directly for Kara? or Adam? We know both of them are reputable already and willing to help with any questions or concerns.

The burnouts (brown spots) on that guy looks really good and the colors (yellows and black) look sweet. You can also try to get a good look at the eyes, they have some hues of green (pastel jungles) as well (that also varies). It's like previously stated, once you see one you won't mistake it.:) Sorry, I don't know the breeder (but I'm just coming back to herps myself).

I've spent plenty of time on 8ballpython window shopping:cool:. I would also suggest you do the same. The folks here seem very reputable, just search this forum like I did for answers. That really is a good looking Pastel though. Good Luck.

P.S. I have a BumbleBee project I'll be ramping up for during 07 Adam. I like the patten on the spider;). (praying to have all of those things line up just right
in the universe for the Super Pastel 07-08)LOL

    Re: Pastel Morph?
Two points stick out about Don Kaye Reptiles. I did a google search and the only Don Kaye I found seems to be a photographer. He did not exist on the web or on Fauna's BOI.

The other issue that seems kind of bizarre is giving you a picture taken by NERD with their ID # on the snake. I'd want to see the snake in it's current state, not before it came to them. That also raises the question of whether or not this person actually has this snake or just "lifted" the picture from NERD and is advertising it for sale.

Be safe, if you're spending your money spend it on a quality animal you know has verifiable genetics from a respected breeder. That doesn't mean they have to be a "big time" breeder but check them out on BOI, ask for references from the breeder (though I hear if you ask Ralph Davies he may get indignant ;) ).

In the end, it's your money, and you'll do what you want to do. Good luck! :)

I'm willing to bet that the snake in the picture is a NERD "line" pastel produced by the seller and not an animal that is "from NERD" ... Using IDs (like the one in the label) that identify the bloodline, not the person that produced the animal is pretty common in the business.

FWIW, I think it's an awesome looking pastel! ;)

    Re: Pastel Morph?
You'd think if I could google Don Kaye Reptiles, I could have checked out the way NERD IDs their snakes and I do stand corrected. NERD does not ID their pastel's on their website that way currently (nor do I know if they did in the past).

Still a little leary on not having any info on the seller anywhere online but hey, I'm a skeptic!

Well I'll admit when I'm wrong...I'm wrong! :) It is indeed a beautiful pastel.

That Pastel looks very nice. Keep in mind that Pastels are extremely variable even within a lineage. And sometimes a great one will come out of a dull looking adult and vice versa. Just food for thought, but it sounds like you are doing well in your research. Good luck!
