    burm or retic?
i finally have the means of keeping and maintaining a burm or retic. now... which one to pick... i really love the colors of a normal burm and i heard that retics are a little harder to take care of. i definitley want a male cause they will grow smaller than a female. any suggestions? shelby you have the granite right? how is it taking care of it?

Definitely go for a burm over a retic as a first giant. Burms have SUPER AWESOME temperaments on average, while retics can sometimes be nasty. A male burm will grow to 10-15' long and up to 100lbs or so.

A burm will never refuse a meal on you (unless you're doing something wrong) and are really great snakes. An adult male will need a nice 8' cage or a 10' as an adult.

Don't retics get longer? Austin Stevens Snake Master had a "man-eating snake" episode and he said that retics can get up to 33 feet or so. He also said that they are he longest snakes in the world.

Yes retics are normally the longest snake species. They don't tend to be as heavy bodied though.. but that's just relative!

what would you keep a 30 foot snake in any ways? im asking as like what do adult retics need because with that size it seems like they would need their own room.

    I don't really know. I'd imagine a 15-20' cage.. or it's own room. lol

yeah i knew that retics will be harder to take care of. but man the retics are nice... i still have to decide on which to get. a burm sounds really good. if i do get one, its gonna be a male so they wont grow too large. im gonna be building a 6 ft cage and an 8 ft cage soon so the giant will do good in the 8 ft for a while.

Baby burms are nervous.. start them in a secure small tub... around 10 gallon tank size.

I have a albino burm and we had a retic. The retics are hunters to the max and ours would stalk me from the other side of the room:O .She was more snappy then any other snake i have ever had.So she had to go as i will not put up with a aggressive snake.Get a burm(reg or albino or your choice) they are very docile. Our female has never even acted like she wanted to bite us.Now if you do not keep them feed properly then you could be in trouble:hungry: .

wow that sounds nasty. haha. i have seen subadult retics and they were tame as a puppy. i guess its all in the snake and different personalities. i think retics are great. im leading more towards the burm tho.

Yep.. rabbits can keep a male burm happy. Large females sometimes get the pigs.

ok i need some info. i heard that normal murms will live longer than albinos and other morphs. is there any truth in this? i like the granite, albino and green as well and i am trying to decide whether to dish out a few more hundred to get a granite or just stick with the normal or albino. maybe even the green. is there a difference in longevity and general health between the different types of burms?

    Re: burm or retic?
I haven't heard of the longevity issue with morphs except with the green burms. For some reason, it seems, most green burms only live a couple of years at most then succumb to chronic RI and die. I would not get a green.

As far as the other morphs, just get them from a good breeder. You don't want an inbred animal.

My burm is taming very well. He has never bit (I've had him 4 months) but he does hiss a lot when I take him out of the cage. He quiets down when he's out for a minute though.
