Boa, Boa, Boa !
Hola como estas ! ... lol
i figured that would be a unique way to start a post. Currently I have only one BP as you can see in my sig. I was doing a little research on Boa and i need help narrowing down the list. Im looking for something that can be housed in a terrestrial cage, a boa that is very docile and handlable, around 7/8 ft max (smaller would be slightly better) also doesnt require a totally different climate from the BP.
Im considering the following;
Central American
Hogg Island
Dumeril
Red tail (Peruvian or Suriname, i was hoping someone could clarify the difference between the 2)
If there are any other Sp. that im leaving out from the list that i should consider be sure to recommend them.
Looking forward to everyones Feedback
Denis

Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
Id recommend a common boa (Boa Constrictor Imperator) I love mine hes very docile, easy to care for, looks awesome, and a good eater

Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
Hog Island all the way! There is no guarantee that you Red Tail will stay that small. Hoggies are amazing snakes!
-
Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
also throw on boa constrictor imperator (colombian boa) Mmwahahahaha ! :worship:

Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
dice you beat me to it .. i was just going to write that but got caught up with the smiles .. lol

Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
You could always get a Nicaraguan boa too.....they don't get a big as their cousins and they are pretty cool boas;)

what is the sci. name of that sp. ? because i hate looking at sp. via common names because they tend to vary from place to place so people use different common names for the same sp.

Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
Nicaraguan boas are also BCI (boa constrictor imperator)
Hogg island boas ROCK. I have a female.. she's about 6' long now, but they can get bigger.
Dumerils can get over 8'. I have a 7' 4" female that weighs 21 lbs.
Peruvian and suriname boas are both BCC (boa constrictor constrictor) they just come from different countries. Peruvian boas tend to get bigger than suris. They also have more yellow color and tend to have a circle back pattern rather than widow's peaks like suris often have. Peruvian boas can top 10'.. for that matter, so can surinames.

Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
is there a big difference between .. Colombian BCI and Nicaraguan ? also what do you think of Central american ?
-
Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
In my opinion nicaraguan and central americans are not nearly as nice looking as your average colombian BCI. Nics and CA boas tend to have muddier patterns and some can be pretty feisty! Most colombians are super docile and tame readily.

Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
The Boa C. imperator from Colombia are the largest imperator boas. Adult females can readh 10 feet in length.
The average length of adult females is 6-7 feet, though. males remain significantly smaller.
Almost all specimen show a calm temper. They are robust in health, good breeders and feeders, They often have a red tail (not a cherry-red as the Surinames, though). Therefore they are often called Colombian redtails (even thoguh they arent TRUE red tails)

Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
I would disagree a bit with your length estimates on colombians.. 7-8' is more the average for females (doesn't sound like a big difference from 6-7', but when you've got a heavy bodied snake like a BCI, that extra foot makes a difference!)
I have seen 7' male BCI too.
-
Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
I have seen some big columbians...8 ft +
If I ever go with a BCI, it will be a Nicaraguan....they are slightly bigger than ball pythons....and....I tend to like darker animals....and Nicaraguans are abit darker than columbians....
Scroll down to the bottom for some pics...

Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
I thought BCC (Boa Constrictor Constrictor) were the biggest boas.
-
Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
Alright. I'm just saying I've seen a lot of boas, and they often get bigger than 6'. If you're considering buying a snake and don't expect it to top 6-7' and then it grows to 8', you may not be happily surprised.

Of the boa constrictor complex, yes they are typically.
-
Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
When buying any snake you should consider it can get bigger..theres been 6 foot ball pythons so you shouldent buy a ball thinking its only gonna get 4-5...always give a couple feet bigger when considering a snake unless you plan on underfeeding it which if thats the case the person should stop considering getting one right then

Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
I won a BCI from Clay but he won't answer my emails so I have no idea when I'm getting him but I'm super excited apart from being very angry at Clay.

Ya, I've emailed him 3 or 4 times, I've called 3 times, messaged him on yahoo. NOTHING. I won it off of one of his auctions. I talked to him before I signed up and won and he was cool. It's been 6 days since I brought him.

Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
Hehe, I don't know about anything other than BCIs. I love mine; he is an awesome snake.
-
Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
That doesn't sound like Clay, why don't you go to his forum and start a thread claiming your boa?
As for which Boa?
I would go with whichever one you feel comfortable with and like overall.
Hogs are great and stay between 5-6ft, BRB's stay under 6ft as well and aren't as heavy bodied, Dumerils stay within 6-7ft on average, Nicaraguans stay between 3-4ft. All of these are managable boas, also males tend to be smaller than females in most of these.
Just want to point out that feeding, temperature and individuals themselves also play a role in how large they get and how fast they get there.
Good luck in whatever choice you make.

BCI - 6' long cage (smaller male central american or nicaraguan may be ok in a 4')
BCC 6' long
hog island - 4' cage if it's a smaller one. Some will still require 6'.
dumerils - 6' cage.. some males may be fine in a 4'
-
Re: Boa, Boa, Boa !
Again, all depends on feeding and individual snake.
4X2 cages will do fine, but some may need a 6ft'er.
