Jeanne's photos of Zeus, who is gorgeous, inspired me to show off the canines Smulkin and I share our home with.

This is Freya. She'd make a lovely mate for Zeus if she hadn't been spayed.

This is Sam and Miles. They are both two year old Malteses, but they are not related. In fact, Miles was born and bred in Japan. They follow me everywhere and bark at anything that moves outside. Smulkin likes to call them "Her Majesty's Royal Guard."

That is one awesome GS. I have seen a lot of them in my life, but never one like that. I have been to hundreds of dog shows and NEVER seen one that beautiful.

Your malteses look very well cared for! Good for you! As a groomer I see alot in deplorable conditions.. matted to the skin and when I shave it off there's sores underneath and often pokey things stuck in the mats.

    They're gorgeous. :D

Thanks, everyone! Freya is not only beautiful, she's absolutely the sweetest dog you will ever meet and very well behaved. She won us over when we found her at the animal shelter as a puppy, and we have never regretted bringing her home (even though she sheds like crazy!). Here's what she looked like when we found her.

As for Sam and Miles, Malteses are high maintenance dogs. I comb them out 2 or 3 times a week, and they go to the groomer every 4 weeks. The groomer takes really good care of them, and they come back sparkling white every time.

Shelby, I acquired Miles (the one on the right) from another client of my groomer who did not want him anymore (I'm convinced he was insane). When I first saw him, he was in the deplorable condition you described above. His hair was longer than he was tall and hung off his feet about 6 inches. He was brown and matted and was the saddest looking thing I'd ever seen. I had to think twice about taking him home. Luckily, the owner paid to have him groomed one last time. My groomer shaved him down to almost nothing, and when I went back to get him, he looked like a different dog entirely. Thankfully, he didn't have any sores on his skin, but his teeth were in terrible condition from eating horribly cheap dog food. I took him to the vet, and while he was being neutered, the vet laser-cleaned his teeth. Now he eats only Science Diet and had developed quite an ego.

That's a good story.. spoiled malteses!

I actually had a shih tzu today that gets brushed at home! I could hardly believe it.. people don't realise you actually have to take care of your dog.

Ohhh, amazing, as soon as I saw the pics of the maltese, my first comment was also, "wow, very pretty, and she loves them and brushes them. It must be nice to be her groomer".

They are very pretty. And as always Freya is beautiful!

Is there any possibility Freya could be a Belgian Malinois? I was watching a dog show the other day and out came one of those and my gosh but she could have been Freya's twin (or at least to my inexperienced eye anyways). I did a google image search and some of the pics are incredibly close to her looks, with the lovely dark mask and light solid body color. I know she was a pound puppy but stranger things have happened finding nice purebreds in pounds and all that. Just a thought really....

Belgian malinois are a fairly rare breed. I have seen GSDs like Freya before (color-wise, but not so pretty as she is. :P)

    Re: Our Canine Family Members
They're not really that rare. Many police forces choose to use them over GSD's these days (not really sure why, but most of them here anyway are Malinois).

Really? I hadn't heard that. At the groom shop where I work we get a billion GSD, but no belgian malinois. We had a pair of shiloh shepherds a month ago.. those guys are cool!

Her genetic makeup is a mystery to us. We had to assume some German Shepherd because physically, that's what she looks like. It's only her color that sets her apart. I assume she has to have some other breed mixed in because I just can't imagine someone leaving purebred German Shepherd puppies at the animal shelter. Nevertheless, she's beautiful and sweet, and we love her. If it weren't for all the shedding she does, she would be absolutely perfect.

Well whatever Freya is she's one beautiful girl! As I said I was just sort of set back watching that dog show and seeing a purebred Malanois that looked so much like her.

Lots and lots of purebred puppies/dogs are dumped at shelters unfortunately..

But she was quite a catch!

Aw, your doggies are adorable. And they look so well-cared-for and clean. Those are some pups I would not mind letting into my house! :) I hate when people let their dogs get dirty/matted; it is a real issue with me.
