Grr!
This made me pretty angry....my roommate's boyfriend was checking out Otis, and when I told him they get about 5 feet on average, he actually asked me if I would get rid of him when he got that big!!! Apparently according to him "a lot of people do that".....Argh! I just told him that I bought Otis for FOREVER, and that doing that is just very irresponsible...I really didn't want to be mean or anything...but that kind of stuff just really peeves me soooo much......

Re: Grr!
*cough*
I used to be a cashier at a WalMart, and we sold fish...I always used to throw random little "quiz questions" at people buying fish to make sure they knew what the hell they were doing. :) Anyways once this couple came through buying a pleco (you know, those suckerfish) and I asked my routine pleco question: do you know how big they get? And the guy says Oh yeah, they get too big for our tank, we have a 15 gallon. This is our third. When I asked him what he meant they told me that they made a habit of flushing their plecos, live, when they outgrew the tank, and buying a new one. I um...made them leave. o_o
So anyways yeah. Some people are just incurably stupid, I guess.

Re: Grr!
The stupidity of people, in general, never ceases to amaze me. SHEESH!! :bonk:

Re: Grr!
My former fiance's entire attitude in life was that "People are stupid". If you just keep telling yourself that, then when they do the totally dumbsh** stuff they do, you're never surprised or disappointed.:frustrate

Re: Grr!
when i worked at the pet store last year... an older woman (late 50's) came in and told me that she just flushed her pleco down the toilet and the f-ing thing plugged it up and she had to get a plumber in. she was actually complaining to me about how much this fish cost her!!!
i told her that i was disgusted that she would do that to a living creature and we would have happily taken it in and rehomed it for her.
i also told her NO when she asked to buy a new small one. duh!!! like i'm gonna sell her another one so she can kill it... "no, i don't think so" - some people!
*rant over*

I *knew* those two psychos at WalMart coudn't have been the only people in the world who did that. :( Unfortunately.

Re: Grr!
Flushing a live fish? Wow.. honestly.. it'd be more humane to pop it in the freezer!
Any animal I get.. I get it for life (ah.. not including rodents :D) I mean I'm hoping to have my burm and my anacondas and all the other snakiekids with me for the next 30 years!

Re: Grr!
hey, i'm all for rehoming a pet if it's not working for you (or they aren't happy with you) - as they are alive and not a possession... but flushing them cause you don't want them anymore... and obviously she never even checked into rehoming it... made me sick!!!

Re: Grr!
Boy I wish rats lived longer....when they're not making snake food, they make the most amazing pets...
I just can't fathom how someone could buy any animal and PLAN to "get rid of it" when it got bigger....it's so unbelievably immature and irresponsible. It was the equivalent of asking someone if they were going to get rid of their puppy when it grows up; unfortunately this probably isn't very uncommon either >__<

Re: Grr!
ddbjdealer - good point. :P I should have said 'for entire natural life expectancy'
Rats do make awesome pets. I started with pet rats before feeder rats.
And yes, people do get rid of dogs when they are no longer cute puppies.. I unfortunately see this happen since I'm a dog groomer. It sucks.

Re: Grr!
HA! I've got this stupid little neon tetra all on it's lonesome in a tank that I want to get rid of. It just won't die!! All it's buddies kicked the bucket awhile ago. But I'll keep the tank running until that fish has lived out it's life. (which seems like forever!)

Re: Grr!
Well I'll confess when I wanted to clear out a tank of small fishies.. they turned into feeder fish for Mr Whiskers my 9" bullhead catfish. Big fishy liked that. :D

That's precisely what our grandma thinks we should do with Emily :( - in fact I think she really believes that! She hates snakes and thinks that when Emily gets big she'll constrict and kill us all

Re: Grr!
My dad keeps saying that when Otis gets big enough he's going to eat the cat and the dog, and then get me when I'm sleeping hahaha =P

Have you ever set down and talked to her and let her know the truth about your snake? Sometimes when someone is misinformed about reptiles they believe everything they hear. Now dont try to force your grandma to handle your snake or yell if she says something that might upset you.Try to get her to read the info here with you sometime:) .If she still refuses to hear or read up on reptiles just say "thank you anyway grandma maybe you can look at some sites with me at another time".She might come and ask you sometime if you want to show her some of the reptile sites you are a member of :D .I hope this helps you

Tried that :) - must admit she's better than what she was - the first time I came into the room with the snake she shot off that chair across to the far side the room as far as she could get - she moved so fast you wouldn't believe she was 90 :D. Now she will stay in her chair and I can even sit next to her (with snake) at the other end of our 3-seater sofa and she'll stay there.
I'm busy educating my colleagues today - I had a (since canceled by vet) appointment so needed to bring her into work with me. Two colleagues have taken me up on my offer to stroke her and were quite enthralled by the fact she wasn't slimy and wouldn't attack :D I'm now waiting on a 3rd who is definitely snake-phobic - she says she's going to come up and look but doesn't promise to touch.
