Pink belly

Okay, this has probably been adressed in a thread before now, but I can't seem to find one...Otis has been hiding for a few days and is overall just acting upset...his eyes are not milky or anything, but it looks like his belly is getting kind of pink. He's a pretty stress sensitive snake, so if he IS close to shedding, that would explain his general unhappyness.

Pink belly is the first sign of a shed.. even before milky eyes. Just leave him be until he sheds.

Soooo after I notice his belly seems pink what's a good time span to expect him to start shedding? This will be my first shed with him, and I'm just getting nervous =(

I have never heard that before.. where did you hear that?

Once you see that pink belly remember to keep your humidity up around 70% until the shed is completely done. Mine usually show the first signs of a pink belly, followed by a general dulling of their coloration, their eyes go blue, then everything clears up and the snake looks normal...about 48 hours later they shed. The whole thing from pink belly to shed seems to take about a week, give or take.

If so, the eyes will probably be cloudy by tomorrow. I have noticed that sometimes my ball pythons will go pink 1-2 days before they go blue. Hope that helps.

I'm actually beginning to wonder now if it isn't something else...he had been acting really upset all week (by upset I mean he's been spending ALL of his time in his hidebox, rather than sleeping next to his rock and exploring his tank) and still hasn't eaten, and I thought for sure it had to be shedding because his belly had a kind of blushing, florescent pink color to it. So I tried to get the humidity up and all that good stuff (I have 3 water sources in there and it's hovering around 40% because of the weather and all that jazz) and I have hardly touched him but nothing....maybe I'm just being impatient? I'm mostly worried just because of the mood change; he's had a few stressful experiences this week, but nothing unusual. I really appreciate all the help....

You are probably just being paranoid. They tend to spend all the time in their hide and don't eat when it is shed time. Give it a day or two.....and you will see blue eyes.....and if not, then you have reason to be concerned ;)

I would not worry too much either. Snakes want to be as alone as possible when shedding. Its a vulnerable time for them so they like to be by themselves. Give him a week, sometimes it will take 3 or so days for the pink to go away and then they get all cloudy like and you will see a shed within 2 days.

While this may not be a problem, keep a close eye on this snake. A pink belly could mean that he is getting thermal burns from possibly a UTH with no thermostat( if not checked they can get up to 120 degrees). This is waht happened to my snake and the pink was a sign that something was wrong. It was a terrible time because it can be fatel if not treated and fixed properly.

It probably is shed. A'Kashja stays in her hide a lot, but with her head out. When she retreats in there where you can't see her at all, I know something is wrong or she's in shed. So far its always been in shed and nothing wrong. A'Kashja is in shed now. Just make sure to up your humidity during this time to about 70% and in a few days she'll leave you a some outgrown skin.
