    what an idiot I am
I thought I’d share this imo embarrassing story. When I was searching out a local breeder in order to purchase my first BP I stumbled upon a website that was from a breeder conveniently in the area I work. So I called the number seeing if they had any “normal” BP. I was told they don’t normally sell their normals but he’d let me have one of the males. I then asked if he had any references like all good intentioned new BP owners should and here is what I got “Honey, I don’t need references. Everyone here knows who I am, and what I do.” Needless to say I was put off, but I like honestly and maybe even a little arrogance J I went home googled his name, turned to my husband and said, gee, I think I just insulted Ralph Davis.

That's a funny story, maybe you should overlook his attitude...I hear he does ok at this snake breeding thing.

Well Ralph does have a great rep in the reptile community, however, his arrogance when you asked for references would have been enough to turn me the other way. Honestly, not everyone has heard of him as you have shown. Arrogance aside, he could have been a bit nicer about it, I would have taken it as him having an inflated head, which obviously he does, and he has earned, but come on now, show a little humbleness, there ARE ppl out there who are just getting into this and honestly dont know.

    Just my 2 cents.

....yep...about a year ago I did not know who Ralph Davis was too. I think someone mentioned the name on this site and I did a search....ha....don't feel bad, alot of us are really new to reptiles too....I find out something about ball pythons that I want to smack myself over everyday ;)

Well, when your average "small" sale is 40K, I think being asked for references on a $100 normal can catch you a little off guard ... Ralph is a really good guy, he's just not used to catering to first time snake owners ... that's really not his market.

Re: what an idiot I am
I have to agree that Ralph is a really good guy. I shot him an e-mail a couple of months ago with a few questions. He shot one back and invited me to call him. No sale, just willing to talk and answer any questions that I might have (my questions were more about my future breeding plans).

I do have to admit, I was a little "star-struck" before I called him - after all, like Adam says, his small sales are much larger than I'm able to afford right now.

But he was willing to talk to a newbie like me, with no promises of future purchases, and invited me to call back or write back any time.

He is blunt, and to the point (kind of reminds me of Adam), but honestly, I appreciate the bluntness. I'd rather be told I'm making a mistake than to be coddled and allowed to continue making the mistake. I dunno, maybe my psychology degree makes me a little more tolerant? Hey!!! It actually IS good for something! LOL

I understand what you are saying Adam, really I do. But still, there are ppl out there who dont know and you are going to get a call from "newbie" types every once in awhile. It may have caught him off guard, but I think it could have been handled better..... "sure, log onto BOI, theres plenty of references there" or something to that nature would have been ok, but to treat the situation as such would have left me feeling dumb enough that I would have walked away and thought him to be overly arrogant. I am sure though, he is an awesome guy, esp. since you say so. But I think even when one makes it big, it is good not to forget the "little guy/girl" who is starting out that may not know. Granted the few who dont know is few and far between for him, but it just seems as if he has forgotten some of those do exist.

Oh well, dont want to make a big thing out of it, was just stating my opinion on that. It is funny though.

The thing is though, he is arrogant - he'll be the first to tell you that. So, I can see how a newbie might be put off by it.

I guess for me, I knew who he was going in, I've read his journals, so I knew what to expect. Guess that's why I was able to hit it off so well with him and not get offended by his arrogance (which I think is well earned, btw).

    Oh dear, that is funny!

Seriously though you did right to ask for references even from Ralph or whoever. Better you get your ears pinned back a bit or feel embarrassed then you buy any snake from some doofus you've never heard of and end up with a sickly creature.

Hope you had a good time teasing Ralph about this one Adam and I want a "Ralphie" t-shirt too LOL.
