Humidity/Temperature gauge
Hey guys,
I'm looking for recommendations for a humidity gauges. I have had 2, one from Lowes and one from Walmart, and they're both broken. One snake knocked one into the water bowl so now it constantly says 99% humidity, this one was only 3 months since I bought it. And the other my boy laid on so only half the screen works, this one was 6 months since I bought it. So I'm trying to get 2 new ones that'll hopefully last more than 6 months. I do like the dual humidity and temperature just because it gives me a quick glance of how cold their cool side is and gives me a rough humidity for the enclosures.

I have had a good number of different ones over the years and most all of them broke. Oddly enough I have found these cheap analog ones have worked great and I have had them for many years. I no longer place digital ones in the cages and now just have one on each side of my snake room to monitor the entire room rather than each cage.

I have about a dozen of these, about 7 years old, no failures, all agree more or less with each other and other meters.

I've seen the analog ones like this not working accurately. What's your experience with the accuracy? Also these tend to never stay where you place them so I'd like to hear your solutions to that as well.

My Exo Terra Combometer Digital Thermometer & Hygrometer has lasted two years. It switches between Fahrenheit and Celsius for no reason but it works.

I compared the ones I have to the calibrated ones I have in my cigar humidor and they were right on. I really couldn't believe it. I figured they would be a good ways off but they all agreed.
As far as sticking them I just clean the cage wall really well with alcohol and use some good Velcro. That way if the snake does pull it off they will simply separate the velcro and not expose the sticky side of the strips. My GTP will climbs on his and it has not fallen off. My ETB did knock hers down and kept doing it so I now just have it sitting on a large flat piece of petrified wood. I have another that I was using in my Hoggy tank but I got a hanging hide for him and had to remove it because of space.

I wonder if I'm just good at keeping them out of moisture's way. I do know that they (any digital unit, even just the remote probes) don't tolerate water, or even a condensing environment for long.

None of mine ever got dunked but they were in the cages of my Bloods and BRB. Both of which have high humidity. That is why I bought the outdoor models. I thought they would be able to tolerate it but even they died one by one. After that I just gave up on those cages.

Re: Humidity/Temperature gauge
I've used these in all my enclosures for years and never had any issues. Snakes lay on them, knock them over, they get wet, etc and they've always been great. Now obviously they aren't water proof, and if they got in a bowl they would probably break, but just normal use sitting in the enclosures they've been fine. I love that they have a high and low feature on there so if something whacky happens with my readings while I'm out I can see it when I get home.

I tried those too. Did pretty good but after two were killed I took the ones I had left out. That's what I have on each side of my snake room now.
Maybe my collection is just harder on gear. I do have some good size snakes compared to a Ball so maybe that's been my problem.

I've got one of those also, and it's been working fine for about 10 years. Might not survive a dive into a water bowl, though, lol.

You're probably right, I could totally see just holding these how a larger animal laying on one could do some damage to it, and I highly doubt these would survive a swim in a water bowl. Even the few times a week I mist my BP enclosure I take them out before. I mean my smaller animals do move them around, and just seeing how they leave them laying sometimes I could only imagine what a blood doing the same thing might do to them lol

Re: Humidity/Temperature gauge
Yeah if young BP's can fling one into the water bowl, still not sure how she managed that, and my other one broke half the display from laying/messing with it, then I don't want to see a blood mess with them lol

Re: Humidity/Temperature gauge
In a strange update the acurite I got from Walmart, the one I found in the water bowl, started working again. Guess it just needed to dry out a bit.
It's this one for anyone wondering: https://www.walmart.com/ip/AcuRite-I...E&gclsrc=aw.ds
