Cresties and Enclosures
This is how the are set up now, but it could change a little. Right now the male and female are in the exo terra enclosure, as you can see, we have really put alot of effort into this. Once we know what the babys sex is we can make final plans for housing. If it is a girl, we are gonna buy the biggest exo terra enclosure you can get and house the females and male together, and use the one the pair is in now for a place to put the male during a break for the girls. The small tank the baby is in right now is ok I think for getting babies started, but we also have other option in the basement.

Nice looking enclosures there Jeanne. So you have 4 cresties now? (looks like you need to update the sig ;) ) They're adorable. I love your adult female.

Nope, just the 3. The male and female young adults and the baby the kids got for me. I just posted 2 pics of him/her cause in the one I caught her/him shedding and the other pic was pretty. Although, one might think the baby pics are of 2 different cresties, it is not in fact, just a different display of color.

Re: Cresties and Enclosures
I was looking at some of these today at Petco. They had a few adults in stock, and I was wondering how they are as pets? Most people who have them seem to adore them.
They told me a lamp and/or a hat pad and to feed crickets and some gel like stuff for geckos?
Is this correct? And can you handle them? I think the thign said colombian crested geckos? But could be wrong? Is there a diff type of crested?
Thanks!

Re: Cresties and Enclosures
very nice setup jeanne!
cresteds are great as pets!, temps can go from low 60's to low 80's mid 70's are the target temps. they might have labeled them caledonian geckos as the come from new caledonia.

Lizards are a lot more work, but cresties are unbearably cute. Get them from a breeder, of course. I think the gel like stuff they're referring to is probably the crested gecko diet powder sold by T Rex. You can handle cresties, although babies can be very skittish. Crested geckos are not from Colombia, they're from a few islands. As far as I know there isn't any other gecko that is called crested. Heat pad or lamp is up to you, it's more of providing a small basking spot. Crested geckos do NOT do well at and above 80F. Too much more heat above 80F and they'll overheat. Cresties seem to do very well around the 75 F range.
Marla wrote up a great caresheet on them. Here's the link

Nope, but my daughter came home last night talking about a crestie she saw somewhere in her teenage travels, and she has been trying to talk me into going to get it ALL day! I am beginning to think I should be sent to my room (where my cresties are) and kept away from Victoria cause she is a bad influence sometimes. HEHEHE She just knows if she can get me to that place she saw it, she has a better chance of talking me into it. So I told her that my gas was low so I did not have to go anywhere. Besides, I think right now, I got plenty of cresties, getting 3 in less than 2 weeks was a HUGE step, in fact, thats the most herps I have ever brought home at one time. And I want to wait cause I am hoping that the baby Victoria and her b/f got me is a girl so it may live with the adult pair I have now eventually (in a bigger enclosure ofcourse). Otherwise, if its a boy, he will get his own bigger cage and a mate eventually.

I would say that a heat-pad isn't practical for Cresteds. They're arboreal, and rarely come down from their perches. If you insist on using a heat-pad, I would mount it along the side of the enclosure, as opposed to the bottom, and even then a lamp would likely be a better choice. So long as the room that the enclosure is in has a relatively warm ambient temperature (60-70 degrees farenheit), a nice, low-watt lamp should suffice. Read a few caresheets, and call some breeders who have alot of experience.

While I keep my Crestie in the mid-70's, this particular topic seems to be up for debate. I've spoken with Garrick at CrestedGecko.com, and he says he keeps his Geckos from the high-70's to mid-80's, and has never had an issue. If I remember correctly, he does lower temps a bit for breeding-season, but he said mid-80's year-round is a non-issue.

Re: Cresties and Enclosures
my room will go from the high 70's to low 80's during the year. they eat, grow and breed well for me. no extra heat just ambient room temps.
jeanne, save yourself some stress/headache, go get the crestie! lol

Hehe. This new addiction for herps is keeping me in a constant but enjoyable broke-status. My wallet has never been so pleasantly thin :D Always something to buy for their enclosures. Now I'm just trying to save for the supplies to build a nice rack system... then come more critters!

Re: Cresties and Enclosures
OMG, tell me about it! I know what thats like.
Hehehhe, on a side note, my daughter has gone to her friends house for the night, so I dont have to hear her telling me to go buy that crestie till tomarrow when she returns.. hmm, maybe she will forget.

Re: Cresties and Enclosures
Well, I have resisted the urge. But I am still thinking of them, and I have a 20G long tank, that I was thinking I could set on edge for them, so it would be tall. It even has a sliding lid(it was a snake type tank)so I could easily access it. A lamp could be put on top? But then it has to shine thru glass. But I thought that the tallness would be very happy places for the geckos?
Although the ones at the Petco were large, I think I would rather buy direct from a breeder like everyone reccomends.
The feeding looked a bit complex, but I think reading the caresheet(the 4th or 5th time!) it said you could feed only the Crested diet? Does that mean no crickets neccesary? I am reading everything I can find at this point adn reading thru posts here too.

Re: Cresties and Enclosures
I do not use crix at all. They are nasty vile things IMO like mice. I use CGD, Clarks and Herptivite and Reptical to be sure they are getting what they need.

Re: Cresties and Enclosures
crickets "vile" their just little bugs! lol between the bearded, chameleon, cresteds, toad crickets don't last too long here.
