Snake poop!
Okay, so I first things first, this is my first ball python, he’s only 300 grams and his poop has gotten so big!! I didn’t realize they’re poop was so big I can’t imagine how big a full grown poop will be [emoji33]! Second thing: from what it seems, ball pythons tend to poop in the same place. I’ve heard people say they pick a spot and always poop there, and it’s usually not in their hide. Well… my little guy ONLY poops in his hide [emoji24]. This is annoying because I have to clean more stuff, and the poop just sits on the glass of the tank on the floor. Is it weird for them to poop in their hide? What’s the best way to clean this up? Right now I’m just picking it up with a paper towel and then spraying with diluted chlorhexidine. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...dc4c2e20bb.jpg

That is not big.
Want big?
Get a big Blood, Retic, or Burm. My big Blood has dropped things that look like they would have come from a baby elephant.

Yikes! Yeah, I know it’s not big, especially for you guys who keep many full grown and other species as well. I just never realized how big they’re poop was supposed to get. It’s something people don’t talk about so I was just taken by surprise when I now realize how much bigger it’s going to get.

Our snakes are predators, but there are also predators that prey on THEM in the wild. So instinctively, they try to stay hidden so they survive, & this applies whether they're eating, mating or defecating. Your snake defecates in his hide because he feels safe there. ;)

Re: Snake poop!
My sand boa is a little snake and has little poops, but I am also fortunate that he only poops in his sandbox. It's great. :P

Re: Snake poop!
Hahahaha it really depends on the animal. My Dumeril’s boa always deposits well away from anywhere she hangs out…but my scrub python has ZERO shame and knows no rules. He’ll slither right through his own poop and come right to me for a hug.🤢 Although, I guess arboreal snakes just get to drop on everything below, so it makes sense that they wouldn’t care.
Maybe try moving the hide and see what happens?

Some of my rat snakes like to go in their water bowls...it's like they think it's going to flush? Just remember: What goes in, must come out! :D

My GTP once shed and during that shed urinated in it. So that next morning I had a shed hanging on the perches filled with pee. A little pee balloon. It was interesting.

My BRB does that often but his pool is big enough for him to soak so I can easily see how it happens.
What amazes me is my big Blood will do it fairly often and her bowl is no where near big enough for her to get in. It's almost like she knows what she's doing. It's actually pretty nice for clean up. Certainly better than her flooding her cage floor.
Occasionally my GTP or ETB will hit the water but I try to position them so that's not easy to do.

That was quite the image! ("come right to me for a hug") But I think you're right & that's why many snakes seem oblivious about where they leave it- in nature, they just move on.

Re: Snake poop!
No joke my 1500+ grams girls take bigger ones then my 50 pound pit. And the 2500-3000+ grams girls I have have taken poops that rival mine and I'm a 160 pound man! Btw love this post every time I spot clean I always think my God look at that duce. Maybe it's because I'm mentaly 12 years old but their poops always amaze me lmao 🤣

Now & then one of my snakes will leave the whole mess (not just urates) inside their freshly-shed skin- it's very tidy of them, I'll say that. :D They've never left it on a branch though.

Few days ago my boy just finished his shed. And I could tell he finished because the second I opened his tub I got odor whiplash. It had been, idk, 2 months maybe since his last dump? I'm not exaggerating when I say it looked like our German Shepherd did a #2 in his tub it was that massive, I couldn't believe all that was inside him. :weirdface
Doubly unfortunate thing is that the shed was obviously unsalvageable (there was also splattered urates in the same area and it was clear the shed wasn't spared), and my mom saw all of that lovely mess.
Needless to say I deep cleaned the entire enclosure after that.

And this is why now (when your snake is "empty") is the time to weigh him, if you're so inclined. One dump can make a pretty big difference in their weight.

Unfortunately I weighed him just as he went into shed, and he's long since eaten so the reading (870 grams) is probably off by like 50 grams or so. I'm sure he's still at least over 800 grams empty though.

I've been wondering why this has been such a hot topic this week? Maybe it's because with colder weather, we're all closing our windows more, & breathing in the "fragrance"? (gasp!) :weirdface

Haha, my Dumeril’s has done that too. But not just urates[emoji51] She wasn’t crafty enough to leave a pee balloon, though! What a gift.[emoji1787][emoji1787]
