Re: I'm just shaking my head
...ha....that is a great way to catch racoons and neighborhood cats....I have set traps for LOTS of animals before....but never one for a snake (although I will try Kev's method from The Complete Ball Python if I ever have one escape again....that book is freakin awesome btw)...
Re: I'm just shaking my head
Moved to general BP forum.
I hope no one really tries that. lol..

Where have I seen that expression before? Oh yeah! Ralph's journal! LOL
Anyway, I had to read that quote like 3 times to make sure I wasn't mis-reading the advice. It was such an old post, I didn't even bother to even say "are you kidding me????".
I'm still slack-jawed over it! ;)

You tie strings to bait for racoons and cats that they swallow?
I can't wait to get the book! Have to wait until after the holidays though!
Re: I'm just shaking my head
i actually saw that done on a mozambike(sp?) spitting cobra on "miami animal police" on animal planet by a exotic animal "professional". BTW, daniel, what page is that on? (if you dont mind) i didnt see that in there.
Re: I'm just shaking my head
Robin, most critters usually just bite and run....no swallowing (ha ha....those usually like to chew ;))
Marshall.....page 30....in the section labeled...."Escapees"...
Re: I'm just shaking my head
oooo, thanks. im gonna check that out when i get off.
Re: I'm just shaking my head
Sounds like that person gets their "techniques" from Bugs Bunny cartoons =P
Re: I'm just shaking my head
Actually no, they did show the guy on Miami Animal Cops using this technique, and he used dead ball pythons I thought to try to catch a cobra, and did. So it did work, and the snake didn't look harmed, although it would be hard to se the harm.
Most likely they saw it there. That guy is a long time profesional at doing this sort of thing, so people would definately think it was okay to do. Not that it is right or good. Just saying it was shown being donw by a pro on tv so most folks are gonna believe it.
The tv wouldn't lie right? (TIC)

Re: I'm just shaking my head
How would that even work anyway? It sounds quite cruel, but couldn't the snake just regurge?

Good point! With a confident, self assured, top of the food chain predator like a cobra, it could very well work ... being stuck to a string would probably just agitate them ... but with a shy, nervous, not so high on the food chain animal like a ball python ... I'd guess a regurg would be an easy way to get to safety quickly.

Re: I'm just shaking my head
....ha ha...i was thinkin of another kinda trap(lean-to) that involves a box...string...stick...and food...after I reread the initial post i realized what was being talked about....that one would not work well for other critters...and think the entire situation would be very stressful for any snake...
Don't loose your snakes and you wont have to worry about traps.
Re: I'm just shaking my head
I saw the show to, it worked but the key thing to remember is that he was catching a exotic cobra on the loose on someone's property, their is a point where the risk of the animal being on the loose out weighs the potential risk to harming the animal. Would I use this to catch a loose BP in my house no as the risk of it getting hurt out weigh the risk of it being loose in my house.
Re: I'm just shaking my head
Ummm would I drive a stake through my nice hardwood floors to tie a string to.......doh NO! :P

Heehee! That's exactly what I thought when I first read it, hence the Bugs Bunny comment...it still seems like a weird way to catch a snake, but if it works!
