Lost A Jewel, Found A Gem!
If you have followed any of my Morelia posts, you probably were familiar with my Coastal Cross, Jewel. She gave me a wonderful 7 years of life to enjoy but sadly she passed in August. She was beautiful to me and she was of impressive size at 8 feet long and only 8 yers old.
I knew I'd have to fill the void and a cage here. Once again I debated on a Pokigrion Suriname boa from my good buddy here and a Brisbane, locality Coastal Carpet python. My wife and kids loved Jewel, I wanted a snake that would be able to move into a larger enclosure sooner than later and we agreed another Costal was the right choice.
My go to Carpet guy has always been Nick Mutton and after some texting, Nick told me he didn't have any Brissy's available.
My reliable and trusted friend JMCrook wasted no time in pointing me in the direction of Mike Pennell. I give a special thanks to Mike for being very kind and very professional during the process. Mike was concerned about Hurricane Ida and suggested we wait an additional week to make sure the snake got here safe and on time.

Folks, I bring you GEM!
She is a (04-12-20) 1 year 5 month old Brisbane, Locality Coastal Carpet Python, my favorite of the Morelia along with the Bredli. Mike's Brisbane locales come directly from Paul Harris.

She's a bit of a spitfire but I really like her. She bit everything, my pants, gloves, shirt but luckily my hands were not touched.
https://i.imgur.com/UWIoli1.jpg
She displays really pretty colors under a florescent light.
https://i.imgur.com/b6dLoEf.jpg
Mike told me he thought Gem would get "at least as big" as Jewel and likely even larger.
https://i.imgur.com/qXca9hR.jpg
That's it for now, she's going to have to settle in and have a meal before I take her out.

Congratulations on your new Gem! Looks like you'll be having lots of fun with her. :D (She's saving your hands for when she's actually hungry, bwhahahaha!)

Mike is a class act.
It was the latest reptile delivery I've ever had from FedEX.
But it was worth the wait for sure.

Little Gem is fabulous! I love that she's a bit of a demon - baby snakes who're determined to stand up for themselves always touch my heart. I'm sure that while you'll be subjected to a little bloodshed along the way, she'll settle as she gets more confident with age and realizes that you're not a predator.
I was so sad to hear about Jewel. I didn't post in your thread about her as I've not been active online for several weeks and didn't want to re-awaken an already painful thread. But I think that bringing Gem into your lives is a wonderful way to honor the experiences you had with Jewel. Blessings to Jewel's memory - she was a lucky snake to have such a good home with you. I look forward to Gem updates!

Thank you 😊
I’m looking forward to many years with this new girl.

My goodness those poses. :O:love:
More and more lately I've been inspired to try my hands at a more cantankerous species/individual someday now that I've cut my teeth on a very placid BP, and your beauteous Gem is no exception.

Re: Lost A Jewel, Found A Gem!
She’s gorgeous G and I love her name. Very cool tribute. ✌🏾❤️

Good for you brother!
A great looking critter.
I had a feeding boo-boo with a little suri the other day and I'm so pissed I didn't take a pic. The little guy grabbed the end of my finger and constricted the rest of my finger! He was persistent too...the little crap made me uncoil him tail first. Undaunted after that affair, the little monster took the mouse right after I set him down. -you gotta like a little guy with spirit...looks like that one has it.

LOL!
Yep that sounds pretty boa like. Time to eat is time to eat!
Another chance at a Poki from you has gone by. Had the Royal passed away I'd be showing off Suri photos right now.
We'll see if this angry little thing grows to be a big, friendly snake like the previous one.
Unfortunately the Bredli doesn't exactly love me yet so the boa and the Royal are my easy handlers.
I still have to come visit and see the Pokis in person.
Chat soon sir!
Zig,
Thanks for the comments. I also feel the tribute was a good idea.
My wife who is not into snakes came up with her name (Gem). The fact she liked Jewel says a lot about what a stable and seemingly friendly snake she was.
I'm not sure if the "like affair" will continue with Gem LOL.

Yup, that's a "real" snake! You got 10 fingers anyway, why you so stingy, man?

I'm not here often lately, but I'm still very much in the hobby.
Gem is doing well and looking better all of the time. She's a Brisbane, locality, Coastal Carpet Python.

She's a bit snappy still but she loves her chicks and rat pups.

Thank you.
I really miss Jewel and her pleasant demeanor. Gem is a work in progress but she is very pretty.
JM has a half sibling of Gem and I get some good info from him regarding attitude and when the calming period comes.
I'm hoping to have a nice, big, sweet girl eventually.

GIO!!! I'm so, so sorry to hear of Jewel's passing😔 She was a beautiful and impressive creature! Gem has a lot to live up to, but she sure does look gorgeous under those lights.

Re: Lost A Jewel, Found A Gem!
GEM looks amazing. Love carpets. She always looks like she is going to eat you. The song "Baby Shark" comes to mind. Hope she has a long and wonderful life in your care.

Its not Gem's week for pleasant behavior but her colors and pattern make up for it I guess.

Gem is 2 Years Old.
This girl hit 2 years old on April 12.
https://i.imgur.com/iUTDxkR.jpg
She's put on some size but this locality seems to grow slowly. She's still bitey and twitchy but I think she's slowly settling down.

Hopefully I'll get some outdoor shots of her soon.

Happy belated birthday! :snake:

Brisbane Locality Coastal Carpet.
I'm getting the crew ready for the winter season. These are probably some of the final photos of the year.
Gem is looking good these days. Like the late Jewel, her colors are holding up.
https://i.imgur.com/JOd7AuG.jpg
Not a morph and doesn't need to be with this pattern and color scheme.
https://i.imgur.com/BeakFyM.jpg
I imagine at some point she'll start to display some reddish tinge which is common for the locale. Side note, the water is clean here, the glass needs a wipe down but I knew if I opened it I'd miss the photo OP.
https://i.imgur.com/RWM2XOT.jpg
Other than her snappy attitude, (slowly improving) she's fantastic.
My buddy JM has a half sibling of Gem and his male looks similar. I'd like to see more of this locality around the forums. They are somewhat rare, but not overly hard to get once you know the right people.
https://i.imgur.com/lYnbzwp.jpg
Gem will get one more winter of feeding before she joins the rest of the snakes here in a seasonal fast.
I expect her to put on a bit of size soon, though I'm in no rush to get her large.
I'll post up again in the spring.

Gem Hit 3 Years Old.
April 12th was the 3 year mark for this girl.
As stated several times in this thread, Gem is a Brisbane, locality Coastal Carpet python.
She was in shed during her actual birthday and finally shed out a few days ago.
She has grown a bit. Unfortunately the weather is still too cold for the deck rail pictures.
Here are the gym pictures of her.
https://i.imgur.com/7jEiGsJ.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/sgYURf5.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/SBGrV48.jpg
I'll post a few more when I'm not as busy.
Happy Birthday girl!
-
It's obvious she's been working out! Lookin' good.
-
I wanted some deck rail shots but these two will have to suffice.
She's been perched for about 3 weeks straight and getting her down typically makes a mess and probably induces stress so I left her alone and snapped a couple photos.
https://i.imgur.com/m3KWIcC.jpg
Unfortunately these give zero size perspective and I would actually like to see how much she's grown. I'll try some outdoor stuff ASAP.
https://i.imgur.com/54QmhMG.jpg
Carpets are a somewhat active species and very good display animals.

Its not great but thanks!
A real camera helps.
This is a different snake but a far better picture.

Different species, but again with something a bit better than the I-Phone 14.
https://i.imgur.com/C0xdcAB.jpg?1
This was an I-Phone though so it all depends. I'm certainly not a photo expert. Lucky shots selected from many failures.

Re: Lost A Jewel, Found A Gem!
You're being too modest. You've even got a portfolio. It's not easy taking a good picture. I know. My snake's as handsome as yours, but no one can see that because I can't take a decent picture.;)

My buddy JM has a collection to die for so does Zig.
The photos depend on the right lighting and in my case luck.
I’m sure you can get a brilliant picture of your python eventually.
I would actually like to see one.
Australian pythons are generally great animals.
Unfortunately my Brissy is not friendly to some fault of my own.
I don’t take her out nearly enough.
Thanks for the picture compliments.
Others here have equal and better photos.
I love looking at good snapshots of snakes.

Since you asked. This is my best pic of Wiggles, so, of course, my daughter took it.

Brisbane Locality Coastal Carpet.
I finally got her out of the cage for some better pictures.
I still can't believe this locale has such vivid coloring. The Brisbane Coastals are incredibly variable in pattern and coloring. These pictures were taken directly under an overhead LED light section with some other lighting on the sides.
This girl seems a bit unique but my buddy has a half brother to her and he's pretty stunning as well.
https://i.imgur.com/Wrp5xEG.jpg
She seems to be in a growth year. She's a lot thicker and the length is coming on too.
https://i.imgur.com/vRCzA2E.jpg
I think I have every one of them up to date with photos this summer.
https://i.imgur.com/s2m7ssu.jpg
-
That girl is a stunner, dude. Agreed, tons of variety especially for a species that in captivity in the states all traces back to only a 1.1 founder pair. Her half brother here has some similarities for sure, but is much more banded than Gem. Meanwhile my female is not banded at all and has almost completely connected lateral stripes down her sides. Love me some southern coastal carpets

A simple cage cleaning moment led to some irritation apparently.
