RIP Pooh
My sweet little panda hamster, Pooh, passed away yesterday. She was probably the best little rodent I've ever had. She tolerated my daughter trying to wash her in a bucket, and even got out once but came to me when I called for her. She ate from my hand, and never bit. I'll miss her a lot. :tears:

Re: RIP Pooh
im so sorry for your loss:(

Re: RIP Pooh
Sorry to hear - a non-biting hamster is a rarity (in the string of those we've had in the past). Did she just expire from age?
I have some cute b/w "mittened" rats if thats any condolence you are welcome to one.

I forgot to post the picture...

Thanks guys! My then 3 year old daughter open her cage pulled her out and proceeded to 'wash' her in a bucket. Poor little thing. But no she never bit....even if provoked. She was 2.5 years, so it wasn't a complete shock. She was starting to turn all white, she had so much gray hair.
I'm actually contemplating breeding rats. I'm just trying to figure out how to explain to the kids why the population keeps decreasing. ;)

Re: RIP Pooh
Oh no she was fine, if a little soaked. No, she passed away from old age. That's just one of my favorite stories about her. (I was wondering why the kids were giggling so much, and went to investigate)

Re: RIP Pooh
What a wonderful picture Christie! Those critters of yours all like your kid's toys it seems LOL. 2 and a half is a grand old age for a hammie so good for you all giving her such a long life full of much love and good care. I'm sure you will miss her and the kids will be sad. It's hard at such a young age to understand that some of our pets just don't live as long as we wish they could (heck that's hard enough for an adult to comprehend sometimes).
Thoughts are with you and your family and dear little Pooh the Pirate Queen of the Hamster Set.

Well you know - young rats grow up quick, hon . . and . . uhm . . . then they have to , you know, go off to rat college. Times are tough, shug - they need to earn a decent wage too ;)

Re: RIP Pooh
I'm so sorry... our pet mice passed away just recently too, so I know how you feel... it's tough with the little ones... they have such big personalities for such short lifespans.

Re: RIP Pooh
It just about broke my heart when I told the kids (after they got home from school). My 4 yr old daughter had tears running down her face, and the fattest lip you ever saw. I almost ran and got another one right there, but I'm going to see how things go and then maybe we'll have some more rodents. (There's the cutest little black hamster at the local pet store, but I don't know how sweet she is....maybe.....)
Thanks a lot guys. She was just the coolest little thing!

Re: RIP Pooh
Omg "rat college" hahahahahaha! Okay I'm for sure using that if Mikey ever notices we actually have baby rats in the laundry room (seems even the youngest male in this house is naturally allergic to my laundry room!).
You can always let the kids play with the breeder adult rats Christie and then just say the babies grew up and moved away or errrr...went to college! LOL

Re: RIP Pooh
That's a maybe... I also have a fear I might get attached to all of the babies. :stupidme: I'm thinking of trying mice first, because I don't have any sentimental feelings for those little boogers...mostly. ;)
I loved my last rats, but they may intimidate my daughter. Maybe we'll go look at the pet store tomorrow and see if I can persuade her rats are cool. :D

Re: RIP Pooh
i remeber my first family pet Lenny ( a short haired goldne beauty that enjoyed nipping fingers) my dad wasnt gonna let us get an pets ( both my 'rents are really anti pets dont even ask how i managed to get Monty!) but we convinced him to lets us get him and he lived with us for just over 3 years and even once survived a 12 hour car ride from toronto to new york when we moved.
he also died from old age. it was a huge loss to us and the was the only other pet in the house ever other than Monty

Re: RIP Pooh
my condolences on losing your little hammie. i had one of the few very sweet hamsters and just loved her to pieces. still haven't managed to get a replacement after several years of her being gone, but now i have the rats so that kind of counts i suppose. if you start out with a baby rat i doubt your daughter would be intimidated. the babies still small and too cute for their own good!

Re: RIP Pooh
Thanks.
My daughter is strange. She loves the animals but is even intimidated by the crestie!! She likes to pet, but not hold. I would love to get a dumbo rat! I love those guys. They're so adorable. Maybe...... :D

Re: RIP Pooh
You should talk to Becky then Christie. She's got the insider info on specialty rat breeders and has some of the cutest pet rats I've ever seen!

Re: RIP Pooh
Here's one of our newer females that is slated to become a breeder. She's a black and white capped rat with some dalmationing down her back and constantly bruxs loudly. Hence her name is Gabby LOL and I'm sure her cagemates just roll their ratttie eyes and call her "that HAPPY RAT!" :P
Merry Christmas from Gabby & the rest of the rat colony!

Re: RIP Pooh
oh i just figured out to handle my situation... oh this is priceless... IF i decide to breed rats... i can perhaps pursuade my friend who has a male rat to bring him over for a "play date" once in a while and then i can just keep a female!
oh ya, oh ya... aleesha's thinkin, oh ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :winner:

Re: RIP Pooh
Nope, they are much better in pairs and will get quite depressed. I have one boy, Sneezy, who is caged alone as per his preferences, and I spend the majority of my day with him when he's not sleeping. They are very socially oriented and do much better with a buddy. Get two females and they will be the happier for it(as will you because you won't be having to spend 95% of your day with the one rat).
If you have any other questions, just ask. If there are things asked that I don't know, I will ask my friends who are small-scale breeders(one much bigger than the other), and they will help me out. :)
