!boa bonanza!
Well, we’ve got the Morelia Madness thread for all things Morelia... figured we needed an outlet for all things Boa as well. Pictures, discussion on husbandry, natural history, etc.
I’ll kick things off with the two representatives of the Genus in my snake room. Boa constrictor (Pokigron Suriname True Red-Tail) and Boa constrictor occidentalis (Argentine Boa).
Post ‘em if ya got ‘em!

More so than I even expected. I guided both of them into their highest ones to be sure they found them (also have them mounted under the shelves) and they’re both using them almost daily. Neither have found or used the under-shelf sky hides though. I’ll move those to upcoming Morelia enclosures if they continue going unused.
The Argentine has been spending all daylight hours in hers and the suri tends to spend daylight hours on the floor buried in his bedding, but has been out exploring the canopy offerings at night more than he had in the previous enclosure. Probably partially attributable to new scents and enrichment options, but I’ll have to closely observe and see if I can detect any new behavioral patterns that correspond with changes in his environment.

If you are into boas, one thing to pick up on is the differences in head and body shape. Sniper has a head in between a Colombian BCI (BI) and a BCC (BC) with a taller loaf body than the typical Colombian so he's a little of each which is what the locale is said to be. "A natural cross", according to Russo's book.
However I see a lot of differences between JM's two boas here. Both head and body shapes are distinct and will become more-so with age.
Richard,
When you can post, you'll have a lot to add. You seem to have a sizable and diverse collection.

Re: !boa bonanza!
Some of the locality boas are very different in body shape and head shape, some have awsome head spears and other like the bc have the eyebrow markings too, thats one ofthe awsome things I like about boas and the reason I keep both locality boas and morph boas, each bring there own unique things to the table

Re: !boa bonanza!
Good topic on the body and head shapes, Gio.
My two Boas are remarkably different that regard.
The Suriname boy, Leonard Eugene, is taller than he is wide and the extremely rectangular in cross section. His head is very flat, spear shaped, and fairly elongated. Being a male he’s also fairly lean in build and will not be pressed for monster size here.
The Argentine Boa, Mirabelle Rose, is very very round in cross section and has a much beefier head shape and musculature. If you look closely in pictures you can see that her right side of her top lip also is a bit higher than the left. Always been like that.
Being female she is noticeably heavier built than the suri as well. She also will not be pressed for gigantic size, but does have that potential in her genetics. In Bob Guerriere’s words, “her mother’s mother is a monster”. Like 9-10’ and 40-50lb range. Should she attain such a size, the two cages I shared pictures of in the first post can have the center removed and become one enormous 8x2.5x2’ enclosure. That’s years and years down the road if ever.

Here are my two!
It's hard to tell from the photos, but Adelita is about twice Kuzco's mass. He's a lot lankier and leaner inch-per-inch, as well as a bit taller and square-er. It'll be interesting to see how they compare to each other once they've finished growing.

I always love seeing such clear, crisp photos of both of your collections, Gio and WrongPython. Makes me want to break out my real camera and set up a light tent and really go for it. The LEDs in my cages are great for viewing, but not the best for photos. Could always do UV bulbs for daylight in the future too.

Re: !boa bonanza!
Heh, the pictures above aren't as fancy as you think. They came courtesy of a phone camera, an Ikea chair, and some fortuitously good kitchen lighting (not to mention some very cooperative snakes). :P An actual camera is on the list for this year, though. Blurry phone camera photos of assorted wildlife through my binoculars isn't cutting it for me anymore. Time to up the photography game!
Some UV lights can really wash out the colors of your snakes. The UV lights Adelita has in her cage make her look grey at times, and she's definitely not! If you really want to replicate the color and intensity of natural sunlight in a photo box, you'll probably have to mix a couple of different lights together.

Russo's book is a great read for anyone interested in learning more about boas. jmcrook recommended it to me awhile back when we were discussing keeping boas vs Morelia. I'm excited this thread got started, and looking forward to seeing everyone's collections in one place.
Forgive what may be a silly question, but along with the body and head shape, have you all noticed any behavioral differences between the different localities that you keep?

Not a silly question at all! Most noticeable behavioral difference to me (and most annoying to me...) is that my Suriname insists on completely and totally burying his every bowel movement 100% below the substrate. Like digs his tail down into the mulch and then let’s it rip directly on the floor of the enclosure. The Argentine just goes directly on top for the most part.
My theory is that it’s a survival mechanism so that potential predators are less likely to pick up on a scent trail. Strange that the Argentine doesn’t do that though as they’re both about the same age and size.
The Suriname is a bit more sedentary in the enclosure but squirrellier when outside and vice versa with the Argentine. Suri also is quite grippy and grabs very tightly when being handed and the Argentine not nearly as much.

Re: !boa bonanza!
My Guyana buries his too.hes nearly ways up high on his shelf too, I love to watch him in hunt mode, he holds on really tight, he won't be very big he's nearly 3 and not much over 4.5ft
My corn island(bci/bi) are my most arboreal boas, they on the branches at least 80%+ of the time, on the corn islands off the coast of Nicaragua they mainly live in trees too and there colour change is really extreme from a nice light grey to an almost khaki green often from morning to night.these arnt a big species, I had a female that was about 5ft but my male are not much over 3.5ft
My longicauda(bcl/bil) prefer it a few degrees cooler and if its too humid they have awful sheds, these very rarely hold on and the amount of times I've nearly dropped them is awfull my female is just over 5ft and the male is not much over 4ft and so much slimmer than the male, they was 5 last month
My bca South Brazilian boas are not quite 2yrs old so I'm leaning more on them as and when, there doesn't seem to be a lot of literature on those, they are mention in the vin russo boa bible but a lot of people think they are are cross between the bcc and boa amerili bca but genetically they classed as bca, the parents of these wasn't 5ft and a nice golden colour they just starting to turn now

I like this new thread! Loving all of the magnificent boas. I'll contribute, even if my recent pics aren't the best. Will try to get some better outside shots.
BCA Silverback (~8 months old) - First pic is blooper reel. Grass was a touch long and he kept his head down. Second pic perched inside enclosure is better. I really like his smashed X saddle which looks like a flying squirrel to me.

You and me both. Very hard to come by and better hope you’re first in line if/when any are released for sale. I’m done for the most part with adding giant animals to the snake room here, maybe a male bco down the road someday... but I’d be lying if I said a good looking Pucallpa Peruvian weren’t welcome here.

Re: !boa bonanza!
Good luck finding a Pucallpa, Nick_MD! They're probably one of my favorite BCs, though they're a tad too large for me to feel comfortable caring for by myself. If I do bring home a BC it'll probably be a North Brazil. Kuzco's breeder seems to have a litter on the way, and I'm mighty tempted...
BCOs and BCAs have also been tempting me for quite a while. If it weren't for their substantial adult size, I would 100% be saving for a very nice BCO right now, preferably a Maxx Pink line individual. BCOs are probably one of my greatest "nerd crush" snakes.

I very genuinely appreciate the forethought you put into your serpent acquisitions, WrongPython. And not without good reason by any means. I think, based on my own experience, that you’d grow into a bcc or bco quite readily given your experiences with both of your boas.
I do not fault you by any stretch of the imagination for being weary though. I fully anticipate that my larger Boa critters could give me a reality check once they achieve terminal size/velocity, but am also hopeful and confident that I will continue to learn their mannerisms at that size and prevent/be prepared for any mishaps that may occur.
Definitely an apples to oranges comparison, but I find both of my Boas infinitely more manageable than either of the retics I’ve kept. Carpets much more agreeable with me without a doubt as well.
I wholeheartedly respect and admire your decision to keep animals that you find to be within the comfortable confines of your keeping abilities for both their benefit and your own. I wish we all, including myself sometimes, had such fortitude.
Prost! [emoji482][emoji216]

Re: !boa bonanza!
Thanks for the kind words, jmcrook. :)
While I'm very tempted to leap into the world of larger snakes to keep those snakes/localities that really interest me, I'm also very mindful of that potential "reality check" and staying within my means for the next 20-30 years. The me of 20-30 years from now won't be as physically fit and able to handle a large, grumpy snake as well as the me of now. Since I'm looking to keep my snakes for at least 30 or so years (to match a colleague's personal age record with their oldest snake), that's quite a consideration. I think working with horses is what instilled the awareness of the "reality check" in me. Yes, they're sweet and manageable most of the time... but one bad moment is all it takes to seriously mess you up, if not worse.
While my python-keeping isn't as extensive as others', I'll agree that boas are generally more manageable than pythons. My little carpet (Pandora) is leagues faster than my fastest boa (Kuzco). Whereas Kuzco just actively slithers in the direction of something that interests him, Pandora can launch herself! Food for thought for those who may be debating taking up a boa versus a carpet for their first large (or larger) snake. Both are very rewarding snakes to keep and share your life with, but their overall manageability and is-this-the-best-snake-ness comes down to personal ability, experience, and preference.
On a tangential note, for readers who may be debating taking up a SD retic as your first python or larger snake: I would 100% recommend taking on (or working with) a carpet or centralian python first. If you can't handle a carpet or centralian, DO NOT get a retic! Retics of any size are advanced-level snakes. I was personally saving room for a pure SD retic a while back, but have since decided against it for multiple reasons.
Slàinte!

Re: !boa bonanza!
I love the different head shapes in boas
Gomez my Guyana who is nearly 3 has started to get the the nice flat head and I also love his eyebrows
The corn island head is longer with hardly a head spear
Yet the longicauda has an extended head spear and a shorter muscle head
The bca( South Brazilian) are only small but they should have a fat head too.
The leoprd boa also has a short head these come from the sonoran boa and has there black eyes too
The motley boa bc (bci) head spear is quite distinct in appearance with the typical cross over the eyes, my female sunglow motley is still quite bright and shows up really well
All my boa morphs are all very different, some genes affect it more than others.
My img even tho she is very black can still be seenhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...df3a90952f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...eea808ffce.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...bff649a7ec.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a8d5050480.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...175c12715a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d2f81014ad.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9605c4b5ef.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...34a89fdf5f.jpg

few missing scales on her nose, silly girl

Rest of my boas are the common variety of various morphs.
This is Julie the Jungle Queen, '08 red group jungle, raised her from a baby

Warmest basking area is elevated in the new enclosures. Was curious to see where I’d find Mirabelle after feeding last night. Just got home and sure enough she’d climbed onto the shelf directly under the panel and temp gunned her at 86°. Ordinary she’d be on the floor directly over the heat tape in her previous enclosure.

Four days post feeding and found this boy perched and basking at 88-89°. Kinda looks like he may be entering a shed. Usually gravitates to the heat in that scenario, interesting to make observations about his choice of location in the enclosure with his heat source now above him vs below.

My sunglow motley shed today, she's 2 next week, she's still got a lot of colour and I'm sure mum's hypo red pastel has a massive influence on her saturation , the lights in the snake room fade her out, she's really orange and peach in real Life
